The Mother of All Encores

by Theo on May 10, 2009

This may not have been our first-ever Interspecies Snorgling post, but it’s definitely a CO Classic: Holy inter-species bonding!”
(Also, have you called your mother yet?  You know, she’s done a lot for you.) ;)

Here’s the deal. “Finnegan” the squirrel was found under a tree in Renton WA. Finnegan was brought to the home of Debby “Sure I’ll take care of him!” Cantlon for care. Meanwhile, Debby’s papillion pup “Mademoiselle Giselle” (I am not making this up) decides she can help out too, and brings Finnegan in with her new puppies. Finnegan proves to be one sweet squirrel, riding mosh pits of puppies and cuddling with his littermates.

Honorary Moms

by Meg on May 10, 2009

A friend of Sender-Inner Amy L. reports: “I’ve had another crazy adventure! On the Gold Coast (about 2-3 hours from my town), hundreds of baby flying foxes have been abandoned by their mothers for unknown reasons…”

P1050226

“There have been a few violent storms and the parents just left the colony, leaving their babies starving to death. So a group of wildlife rehabilitators are rescuing them. They are an endangered species (grey-headed flying foxes).”

P1050228

“…It was quite an experience! We worked for 18 hours two days in a row so I’m tired! But it was all worth it because they are so darn cute (see pictures)!”

Happy Spring Saturday, Peeps! Who’s up for a few Lil’ Floating Snacks? er… ‘quacks’?

Maggie from Australia writes: “They are Pacific Black ducklings, native to Australia, who we rescued after they fell into the man-made water feature outside our home and couldn’t get out again [they were only a few days old and were a long way from flying]…”

“This picture was taken one night when we’d returned the ducklings to their temporary sanctuary in our guest bathroom. Lucy, our 3 year old beagle, was fascinated by them and whimpered for hours after they were taken away – she missed her little mates.”

The baby ducks should be releases to the wild later this month… Thanks, Maggie.

So we’ll show you some nice clean ones instead, courtesy of the Wildlife Centre Project in Tunbridge Wells, England.  According to the Daily Mail, these black-and-white babies were taken in after being abandoned by their mum.

Gee, your hair smells badger-rific!

(whiny documentary presenter voice) Experts are noting an increase in orphaned badger cubs, as Man continues to badger the boundaries of his badger fragile relationship with the environment badger, bringing us badger more in conflict with badger badger and badger ultimately badger badger badger badger

You're such a dear deer, dear.Back again we go to the Daily Mail, this time for a story so incredible that the hoax hunters over at snopes.com stepped up to verify it: The story of Jasmine, a rescued greyhound who has returned the favor by serving as surrogate mom to 50 creatures, ranging from puppies to deer.

“She simply dotes on the animals as if they were her own,” says Geoff Grewcock, operator of Nuneaton and Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary. “She takes all the stress out of them and it helps them to not only feel close to her but to settle into their new surroundings.”
This is so absolutely totally NOT Photoshopped, okay maybe a little.

Pictured with Jasmine are, from left: A pup, a deer, another pup, a bunny, and a barn owl.  Not pictured: A unicorn, The Yeti, an alien face-hugger, Wally Gator, Phil Spector’s hair, The Chicago Cubs, and Abe Vigoda.

Capt037773325de745d0b19e56f7b32ee_2According to Yahoo News, the parrot pictured at the left saved the ‘tocks of a choking girl by squawking: "Mama Baby! Mama Baby!" and flapping his wings until the babysitter returned to the room and gave the girl The Heimlich.

Awesome!

According to the report: "This undated image from video released by CBS4Denver, shows Willie, a Quaker parrot in Denver, Colo., whose cries of alarm alerted his owner when a little girl choked on her breakfast. Willie has been has been given the local Red Cross chapter’s Animal Lifesaver Award."

In his honor are a couple more cute parrot shots. Above, a McBeakersons named Ivan, and below, two puffballs.

Floppy manatee rescued!

by Meg on March 27, 2009

According to newsite Sina:

Meanwhile, over at Save the Manatee Club, also in Brazil a calf (perhaps the same one, we’re not sure) receives behbeh formula and takes a bref:
