Return To Cat Island (2016 Version)

[*Note: Previous excursions can be found here, here, and here. -Ed.]

Frequent sender-inner Scott Y. is back with more video! “I wanted to share some footage that was taken during our visit to Tashirojima, Japan’s Cat Island. The photos of Cat Island on the Internet really doesn’t do justice when compared to the experience of actually seeing (and getting swarmed by!) wild cats in all directions. Below are two videos of me (Karen) during the first feeding encounter on the island.”

“The cats are actually quite cute and cuddly, and during the winter months all they want is some shelter and food. We did our best to pack as much food and treats as we could to help the hungry cats as they followed us wherever we went.”

  1. Love the Doraemon face mask.

  2. Sharon Wilson says:

Are people allowed to adopt the kittehs if they want?

  3. Katherine Evans says:

I see two videos of dogs instead of cats??? Please fix. thanks

  4. @Katherine Evans: plays correctly here in a Chrome browser; suggest clear your cache and/or cookies.

  5. Cute kitties, but I hope they are sprayed and neutered!

  6. Ditto on the spay and neuter. Allowing the cats to multiply and not be cared for would be cruel.

  7. grytlappar says:

Are they required to wear the face masks??? It seems a little… extreme/wacky.

  8. They get regular vet visits, but they wouldnt be if they all were fixed.
Face masks in winter counteract dry air. Also works on airplanes to prevent dry air headaches. She has it to avoid catching or spreading germs from/to the kitties probably.

  9. Most of those are stray cats… So most likely yes. Problem is while it seems like a nice tourist place it isn’t really. :(. Most of the visits show the good sides of the island they don’t show the many cats in need of medical attention and a home.

A friend of mine lives on the mainland of Shikoku so she has been a few times to the island to help volunteers neuter the cats
