多摩に満足して16日 (Happy 16th To Tama)

Tama is the “Super Ultra Station Master and Operating Officer at Kishi Station in Kinokawa, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan.” Try and get all of THAT on a business card. (C.O. archival super coverage here and here.) Today is Tama’s Sweet 16th Birthday! (Video of the festivities c/o NHK NEWSweb.)

You can even buy Tama stuff (of course) here. I think. Chrome won’t translate this one. Nuts.

Here’s the current work schedule for Tama and intern Nitama.

  1. Happy Birthday to Tama! I’m so glad she has an intern. 16 is a very venerable age for a cat, and I’d hate to think the railroad line would lose its calico stationmistress.

Happy Birthday, Tama! The cute car at 1:30 would sure cheer up my commute.

    Also, hooray for senior cats!

  3. Did they paint the train for the cat’s birthday?

  4. AWW 😀 Happy Birthday, Tama 😀

  5. @EAG46, I feel the same way 😦 I would cry 😥

  6. grytlappar says:

I loff her! And as long as she doesn’t get an ailment (kidneys), she can live well into her 20s! 🙂 Besides, she has more yen than god, so she’ll get the best vet care should that happen.

So, did some research… Get this: Tama saved not only Kishi station but, unbelievably, the whole company.* (Whaaat?!) The company, on the verge of bankruptcy, had destaffed all stations, leaving only a few caretakers. The one at Kishi took in lots of stray cats, and he began feeding them at the station. Hq understood Japan’s deep love for Qte and in a brilliant move they made Tama the station master and got her a little station master hat… 🙂 And voila, history!

Now, this seems inplausable but I read it in three different places (I’m nuts): The railway system that was close to bankruptcy got a $10 million boost (!!!) thanks to travelers eager to see the kitty station master. In 2010, after 3 years of increasing ridership, Tama was promoted to “Operating Officer”, making her the cat to become an executive of a railroad corporation. =^.^= You can’t make this stuff up!

PS. In case anyone “needs” a pic of Tama in her office… http://www.spoon-tamago.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/station-master-tama_genpi.jpg

And she got her Tama train in 2009. 🙂

  8. Jenny Islander says:

The photo collage, top right pic: “OK, I get it, you love me. Can I go home now?”

  9. zoomingjapan says:

Wow, so old already? Happy birthday!

I went to visit Tama in 2010. She was sleeping almost the whole time I was there, but I could buy lots of cute Tama merchandising and the train station building is so cute, too.

You can read about me visiting Tama here: http://zoomingjapan.com/travel/station-master-tama-the-cat/

  10. Sharon Wilson says:

A kitteh train with books on board? Get OUT! WHY can’t they have this stuff in the US?

  11. Sharon Wilson- because people in the US are not respectful of others property. Sadly, I don’t think it would last a month here without vandalism. Sigh
