Inter-Knitters! The Penguinz Need U!

Knitters of the Internet! The Penguin Foundation needs you! Well, they need your Sweateuh! If a penguin gets caught in some type of oil spill, they need Little Sweateuhs to keep warm. Back in 2011, they had enough Sweateuhs. Now they need more of ’em. Let’s hear what Lyn Blom has to say- she is the receptionist at Phillip Island Nature Parks in Victoria, Australia. (Interview with host Red Symons from 774 ABC Melbourne Breakfast– and they call ’em “Jumpers.” Same diff. G’day.)

Want to knit a Penguin Sweateuh? This link (Opens PDF) shows you how, and also has contact info.

  1. FYI – Must be 100% Wool Yarn

  2. DewiCasGwent says:

They are called jumpers because orphan kangaroos need them as well

  3. Sharon Wilson says:

Can’t they just wear a tube sock like kittehs?

  4. gangewifreweaving says:

omg a penguin sweater knitting pattern!! this is amazing and so important. love those little penguins. ❤

  5. Reblogged this on taanjiastreasuresblog and commented:
    too cute

  6. What a wonderful way to use up my leftover yarn. I wonder if all the penguin sweatuehs need to be wool?

  7. Or maybe not…

These two posts were almost right next to each other in my RSS reader:

  8. rocky griffin says:

Excellent idea! This outfit really brings out the penguins cuteness!

  9. Colleen – I just sent the penguin group (link provided in your link) a request for them to note on their website if they do/do not need more sweaters. Here’s to hoping they post something there! Meanwhile, I will still knit some penguin sweaters (cause they are about the same size as some dogs and kitties!)

  10. Actually, nope. Don’t send any sweaters! They don’t want them, and didn’t ask for them!

  11. whawhawhatsis says:

Here’s a link to a penguin jumper FAQ that was updated in March 2014:
Quick summary: They don’t need them in Tasmania any more, but they’re collecting them at Phillips Island to sell on little stuffed penguins to raise funds for conservation. I got a jumper-wearing stuffed penguin from them a couple of years ago, and she reports it is absolutely insanely adorable, as one would expect!

  12. whawhawhatsis says:

That should be “a jumper-wearing stuffed penguin FOR MY DAUGHTER.” Repeat to self: Preview is your friend. Preview is your friend. Preview is your friend….

  13. Catwhisperer says:

It has been too long since I’ve stopped by CO. This was just what I needed! I ❤ you, NTMTOM.

  14. Catwhisperer says:

Shoot! Wrong post. I told ya it’s been a while…

  15. Ok seriously, how is this not tagged as a Knitted item?

And was it only three years since that post?

  16. purrpal says:

    I can’t knit…wonder if there is a crochet version.

  17. @Kar, ’cause I didn’t know there was a ‘knitted’ tag! But it IS there now! Whew!

  18. Reblogged this on A blog about all kinds of crafts and commented:
    Dear fellow knitters,
    Let’s help these little cuties!!!!!

  19. Christa says:

Posting this because I liked the Q&A format that cut right to the chase. Not gonna lie, I really want my own little penguin in a sweater and just might order one “for my kids”.

  20. Someone needs to transcribe the knitting pattern for us crocheters (seriously, needing drives me to drink, ummm, more than I already do). Crocheters want to help pengies too!!!!

  21. ohhowmybrainhurts says:

Err, Knitting not needing. Not enough caffeine yet!

  22. Markus baur says:

DONT knit a penguin sweater – they already got 15000 (fifteen THOUSAND) of them ..

  23. Magnoire La Chouette says:

They do not need any more sweaters. I have been getting this on all my crochet blogs. For those who want to make one anyway, here is the crochet version.

  24. This is very cute, but sweaters can harm penguins! Pressing their feathers against their skin is bad for them. Please post a retract telling people to stop knitting!
