Return To Cat Island

We took a look at these maniacs a couple of years back. Now let’s see what they’re up to these days.

“The second I saw this story I was shocked that I hadn’t seen it on the CO site. [See above. Ed] I’ve been an obsessed follower (according to my husband) for several years! This is a great story with amazing photos of an island off Japan where cats totally rule!” XO Ellen F.

  1. cats do indeed rule! 🙂

  2. Forget Disney, this is the happiest place on Earth!

  3. That’s so cute <33

  4. Cute! Where is this place?

  5. That’s how I imagine heaven to be!

  6. Reminds me of the cats on the Greek islands. Check out the photographer Hans Sylvester.

  7. I want to move there!

  8. Just me but I kind of think they’d be cuter with some notched ears.

    *smashes piggy bank, packs suitcase*

  10. Some of them look … well, not ill, but like there are a lot of little parasites living on them. Still, I think these are happy cats. I always feel sorry for mine because they cannot go out and annoy birds and mice.

  11. These are great photographs! I love the harmony between all the kitties 🙂

  12. The rule of cuteness is: If you look a little bit like the cat from the comic strip Gaston Lagaffe you’re cute!

  13. Such cute kitty’s. What a cool place for them to run free. I do hope these cats if they are able to be caught. Can get nurtured.

  14. Neutered and nurtured.

  15. Clairdelune says:

This looks like the perfect retirement spot for a cat lover, doesn’t it?? I mean really, we have an island, the ocean, plenty of fresh fish, and kittehs all over… and the cost of living is probably low… Paradise!!! 😀

  16. Agreed. Cat Island or Key West, love ’em both.

  17. I want to live with them because of their innocence and beauty. Is this a true story? I sure hope it is.

  18. I second that, pyrit 😀 I so want to cuddle each one of those dear sweet kitties 😀

  19. Don’t forget passport, Alice Shortcake 🙂

  20. The story is even more amazing than you might think.
Yes, that island really exists in Japan and it was cut off for a few days when the tsunami hit in 2011, but the cats kind of “rescued” the islanders!
You can read all about it in my blog about Cat Island Japan:

  21. The only issue is that it’s a bit far away from the main land, so you’re a bit isolated.
And when the tsunami hit in 2011, the island was cut off for several days. Buildings near the coast were completely destroyed! 😦

  22. This is Tashirojima in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.
