Caught In The Act

Animuhls (like kids) can do the darndest things. Sometimes, if you’re a great photographer (like these folks as seen on My Modern Met) you can get a terrific shot by just being in the right place at the right time. Talent and a great camera helps, of course!

These were a part of The Mammal Society’s Photographer of the Year competition earlier this year. (The 2014 competition is now open.) Individual photo creditos in the hovers.

First Place Winner: Jumping Rat

Gray Seals Laughing

Leaping Squirrel

  1. Fantastic photos! “Jumping mouse” cracks me up! Poor leetle wood mouse, “ouch, ouch’ ouch” Too early to think up pun with blackberry–Oakley? Your brilliance is needed…

  2. Licking fox just kills me. It’s the head tilt + ears~!

  3. Dog Lover says:

Wow, those are absolutely stunning! Poor leetle wood mouse – probably trying to impress his girlfriend with this strength and agility (you try scampering with a piece of fruit that’s half your own body weight). 🙂

  4. Killer Klown says:

Sorry, Seal #2 is all ‘WhatchtalkinboutWillis?”

  5. 260Oakley says:

Mouse’s eyes are bigger than his stomach; finds himself in a bit of a blackberry jam.

  6. e z reader says:

LOVE these! Each one a candidate for a calendar.

  7. I had the fox picture set as my lock screen for a long time. Made me smile every time I woke up my phone!

  8. I loff these pix.

  9. i have a perfect one, but my chances of catching it are nil. every year about this time (happened last week) i’ll be sitting on the sofa and i’ll hear a loud knock on the glass door. i’ll look back and there will be a roadrunner looking into the house, having just tossed a rock at the glass. one year the roadrunner had two adolescent roadrunners with it. i may have to set up a webcam.

  10. Roadrunners in your back yard. How cool is that?!

  12. Smartypants says:

Wonder if they really say “Beep Beep”? A webcam is definitely in order!

  13. Smartypants says:

…and who even knew there was a “Mammal Society”?

  14. Martha in Washington says:

All of these pic titles sound like they should be yoga poses!!

  15. Blue Footed Booby says:

My mom caught a crow trying to pull the cover off of the cover on a vent sticking up through the roof. Birds are jerks.

  16. ….down a prickly thorn bush.
That berry is significantly bigger than his head. Just sayin’.

  17. …and aren’t all COers so pleased that there is? So much to squee at. I love me the mammals

  18. whawhawhatsis says:

We used to have crows who liked to crack nuts atop the skylight at the top of our stairwell. At 5:00 a.m. Very popular, that.

  19. You don’t disappoint! 🙂

  20. I wonder if anyone managed to capture a shot of the sabre-toothed tiger chasing that poor lil squirrel?!

  21. Smartypants says:

Oh, have you guys seen the video (no doubt on Youtube) of the crow ‘snowboarding’ down a roof using a plastic lid? They’re so smart!

  22. Seen it! Love it! Crows are smart. Should we tell them they need to work on their manners?

  23. I think that at the scale that mouse is, the thorns don’t bother him in the same way they would us — they’d be obstacles on the ground for him to step around.
