Sacramento’s Answer To Maru: NORM!

Not all of Sacramento’s Fat Cats are in the Capitol Building. Please say hi to Norm Lopez! Norm accidentally ended up at the Sacramento Front Street Shelter when a stranger mistook him for a pregnant cat in distress. A shelter employee recognized Norm and he was soon reunited with his owner. As a result, Norm now has instant Internet Cult Hero Status– he’ll be hosting a pub crawl August 31st to benefit the shelter!

CO caught up last night with Norm’s Official Hoomin, and we asked Tyler Lopez about his name. Why Norm? “Sounds like a big boy name- it just suited him!”

First two images from Martin Christian Photography. Third photo from Chris Rylee Photography via Norm’s FB. Fourth image from Ritchie Argue’s Tumblr. All other photos from the very talented Sue Morrow/AP via SFGate and SacBee.

  1. AWW 😀 Norm is one BIG kitty who is well loved 😀 I wish him a long and happy life in his loving forever home with his human Tyler Lopez 😀

  2. I shouldn’t be casting stones (I CAN see myself in the mirror, thank-you-very-much!), but while Maru is, err, pleasantly rotund, Norm just looks obese, which detracts from his undeniable cuteness. I’m sure Mr. Lopez loves his Norm dearly, so maybe he could invest in some weight-control kibbles and cat toys so that his lovely cat-friend can shed a few pounds?

  3. His owner said that she has him on weight control food.

  4. Norm is adorable in every way!

  5. The lady who owns Norm already has him on a weight control diet so please don’t judge and go on about his weight, we can all see that he’s fat but more important is that he is loved and taken care of.

Some things are not always easy to control, I myself have 5 cats, they are all about the same age and they all eat the same food at the same time but 3 of them are the perfect weight, one is big as in Maine coon kind of big and one is just plain fat.

My fatty marmie, Fluffins MacGillicuddy, eats weight control food and plays regularly, but he’s porky and there’s not much I can do about it. God just made him portly. Yay for variety.

  8. sabrina rose says:

Norm is one fine feline. I like a fella with a little meat on his bones! (my gramma used to say that!).

  9. Same here. Although all my kittehs eat about the same, one tabbeh is laaarge. I call him The Sphere. 🙂 Another is a senior citizen (16 1/2) and is a bit thin so kibbles need to be out all the time for him.

I LOFF Norm! It is obvious his hoomin cares for him very much. I love the parts of the video when he is keeping an eye on who walks on HIS sidewalk. 😀

  10. Related to Lucille MacGillicuddy? 🙂

  11. “I’m busy .. Talk to the paw !”

  12. THE SPHERE!! Thanks, just snorted meelk outta ma nose onto ma keyboardz.

  13. He was mistaken for a pregnant cat in distress!! Going to be hard to live that one down, Norm.

  14. Weight control food only works if you monitor the serving sizes…I agree with Madame X, Norm just makes me kind of sad. Watching him groom made me cringe a little. I hope he’s healthy!

  15. Brother Cream is one cute round kitty!

  16. I never watched Cheers, but one of my favorite clips seems apt here.

Norm walks into the bar (ha!) and Sam asks him: “Norm! What are you up to?”

To which he replies: “My idea weight, if I was 11 feet tall.”

  17. As Weird Al Yankovic said it (sing to tune of Michael Jackson’s “I’m Bad):

“Your butt is wide, well mine is too
Just watch your mouth or I’ll sit on you
The word is out, better treat me right
‘Cause I’m the king of cellulite
Ham on, ham on, ham on whole wheat, all right

My zippers bust, my buckles break
I’m too much man for you to take
The pavement cracks when I fall down
I’ve got more chins than Chinatown

Well, I’ve never used a phone booth
And I’ve never seen my toes
When I’m goin’ to the movies
    I take up seven rows

Because I’m fat, I’m fat, come on
    (Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I’m fat, I’m fat, you know it
    (Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I’m fat, I’m fat, come on you know
    (Fat, fat, really really fat)
Don’t you call me pudgy, portly or stout
Just now tell me once again who’s fat”, etc.

  18. Mauderules says:

Norm’s a whole lotta lovin’ and I’d totally go to his pub crawl if it weren’t in California while I’m in New York.

  19. Love your need to get someone playing the guitar and video tape Norm in action! I can’t wait 🙂

  20. Maru is actually normal for his breed… It’s actually just a lot of fur. Norm on the other hand…

  21. And please everybody, DO find that video on youtube. It´s hilarious. 😉

  22. I agree. Maru is pretty much normal size, just a bit “rounded around the edges”. Norm is obese and can´t really be compared to Maru. I´m glad the owner is helping out with his weight control, she sounds like a really lovely, responsible pet owner. 🙂

  23. Just found it. Yes it is. And “Eat It”

  24. If we’re all made of star stuff, Norm just has a bit more universe in him, that’s all. What a cutie!

  25. Coffee Cup says:

But how do you know she isn’t monitoring serving sizes? It says he’s been losing weight.

  26. Open up your mouth and feed it.

  27. Wow. Some of you are incredibly judgemental.

  28. Norm HAS lost weight in the few years that Tyler has had him, he was always a big guy and was even bigger before she adopted him. Norm is on a weight control diet AND goes on walks with her & her dogs. He probably gets more exercise than most house-cats. If you ever met Tyler, you would know that she cares, very much, about the fitness and health of her pets, as well as her self. Please, don’t judge or make assumptions. Big cats need love too!

  29. blondalex says:

Norm lives across from the community garden where I tend a plot with friends. We’ve seen him sitting on his rump just like a person on the steps of his owner’s Victorian. It’s hilarious. He’s pretty sweet.

  30. If you watch the video from the Sac Bee, you’ll find Norm is losing weight… the current owner acquired Norm a couple years back from owners who were going to give him to the animal shelter … so Tyler stepped in to take care of him. Pictures don’t tell the whole story … it’s his attitude which captivates you. He doesn’t move for anybody, and pretty much owns the block of 14th Street between P & Q where he resides. We love saying hi on our nightly walks.

  31. Norm reminds me of Winston. Loff ’em bofe.
My tale of 2 kitties; both fed the same meals. Big one is duffel bag-sized, gets lots of outdoor exercise and few treats. Little one is a squirrel-sized wee slip of a thing, mostly indoors, gets less exercise and more treats.

  32. If it is judgmental to not find obese animals cute then call me judgmental, I’ll own it.

  33. My doctor put my cat on a diet and she is only 17 lbs. Norm needs a weight loss program and then weight control. Hard to go through but we are getting there with out cat. It takes about 6 weeks for the tummy to shrink. When our cat has lost enough weight that the vet can feel her ribs, she will then go on weight control.

  34. Here is hoping that he gets down to a healthy weight soon!

  35. *psst* Needs a Blorp tag! 😉

  36. AWW 😀 I would just LOVE to see a picture of your two kitties, pyrit 😀

  37. AWW 😀 You are so lucky, blondalex 😀

  38. 😆 I have seen the video, Angel 😆 I never have laughed so hard 😆 That is one video I have watched over and over 😆
