UPDATE!!! Cuteporter Andrew Y. just alerted us to a BIG OL’ HONKIN’ BATCH of new photos. Voilà!

Clipboard01 From now through September 13th, visitors to Keikyu Aburatsubo Marine Park in Kanagawa Prefecture, southwest of Tokyo, can actually shake hands paws with Asian small-clawed otters. (English version of the site is here.) Folks dip their finger in Wakasagi Smelt extract, then poke it thru the hole.

Quoting Steve L. of Petslady.com, “The program is open daily from 11:50am on weekdays and from 12:40pm on weekends and holidays. Admission is 500 yen (about $5) and reservations can be made by phoning the Park directly. Due to the popularity of the program, you really ‘otter’ call before visiting.(+81-46-880-0152.)”

  1. SlaveToCat says:

Zoo director Seiji Ozawa spent weeks tormenting the otters with “fish fingers”.
His staff now call him Owie Ozawa of the 9 Fingers.

  2. In the video, much otter disapproval! Too cute

  3. The Japanese did it again – kicked our asses in the cute department!

  4. wait til u see what J has warming up in the bullpen for later today.

  5. I didn’t think anything could out-cute a litter of new born kittens, but a litter of new born otters did it!

  6. Chantal L says:

I can top this – there’s a zoo in France called Beauval. They have an enclosure full of otters there. When I was younger, the fibreglass around their enclosure had a small gap at the bottom, and the otters would all poke their paws underneath, allowing everyone to stroke them :D

  7. loribelle says:

    Fish fingers and custard?

  8. Sharon Wilson says:

    What’s French for “ottere?”

  9. Une loutre.

  10. WIN!

  11. Also knowing otters appetite they have to be bigger on the inside!

  12. I hope the Wakasagi Smelt extract doesn’t have any Wasabi in it
    .. hmm .. Wasabi . . yummy

  14. Did that Mini McOttersons have a dolphin plushie in his cage? I am ded.

  15. Hajimemashite, Otter-san! Wonder if they will squeak like the Mr. Vend-a-otter from a few weeks ago.

  16. awwww!! I love otters and their hand-holding-ness!!!! =D such cute faces!!!

  17. In Japan, even info boards are cute.

  18. *utter hysterics*

  19. WAIT til u see what else I found. As George Takei says on the TV commercial…”Oh, MY.”

  20. I want to go to Japan to shake hands with an otter, and cuddle Maru :D

  21. whawhawhatsis says:

    Shouldn’t that be *otter hysterics*?

  22. Dog Lover says:

Japan is light years ahead of us in the Qte Department. Dang them!!! :)

  23. You’re sure gonna be busy there then. I wonder how far Maru lives from the otters. Perhaps they’re neighbours in cute.

  24. I live around wild otters so frankly seeing them captive makes me sad. Our mated pair had four pups this year. You see them on their terms.

  25. This zoo is open for over 12 hours until well past midnight?! Don’t the critters get tired and cranky?

  26. Animals aren’t on earth for the amusement of humans. I’d love to cage humans for a week out of their habitat and see how “cute” it is. Zoos and circuses are inhumane.

  27. Une l’autre? Ha!

  28. I would worry about all the germs little otters are getting from all those strange hands touching their food. Or does the zoo make visitors wash them first?

  29. Danielle R says:

Dude, have you seen how wild animals live? Being wild sucks major balls. Just look at all the feral cats and dogs out there and you get a brief taste of it.

Many of these animals are part of breeding programs because their species are threatened or, in some cases, endangered, and cannot survive in the wild (LIKE PANDAS, which are worthless to their habitat anyway). It’s not an ideal way to do things but it’s the least we can do to right some of the insane wrongs we have done to the world.

As far as caging humans and subjecting them to unsatisfactory living conditions, we do that to ourselves already. See: jobs, hospitals, assisted living centers, nursing homes, etc.
