It’s getting really close to the Christmas holiday season, and just the right little gift is on everyone’s mind. We have it (er, him) right here!
There’s a new Bebeh Panda at the San Diego Zoo, and through a contest, he got a name! It’s Xiao Liwu (ZHEE’-ow LEE’-woo), Chinese for “Little Gift,” according to ABC News.com.

Meeep !
Is there anything like a Panda Bear Roadrunner??
*meeb-EEP* !!
So cute! And I know what you mean, Little Gift–I don’t like have my waist measured either.
Who does?
And here is Xiao Liwu at 100 days old, at his 12th exam. (Who’s a cute wittle panda cub? Who’s a cute wittle panda cub? Xiao Liwu is!)
Dead, dead, dead. The little gift that keeps on killing.
Rises from faint to applaud.
Haha… sounds like he’s saying “Meee! Meeee!”
Such a cute noise. Sounds almost like a cat, actually.
BTW, Xiao is not pronounced `zhee-ow’ but `sh-ow’ (not the word show, but `shh’ sound with `ow!’ as if you hit yourself on something). (I’m studying Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan.)
Thank you! I wish Chinese people would spell their names better!
P.S. JUST. A. JOKE.
P.S.S. My IRL name is just as bad.
So is that a glottal stop? They could at least have the decency to include an apostrophe. Languages are harrrrrd.
I was about to say Xiao is pronounced more like “See-ow”. Rhymes with Meow
(Being actually of Chinese extraction, but only speaking enough Mandarin to order food and hold a light conversation)
I’m also part Chinese, but if I had learnt my father’s language, I would be speaking Cantonese and not Mandarin.
I’m happy to see he hasn’t lost any of his squeekingks. What a little love minkee!
the ‘meee’ squeaks. the roly-poly walking. the smooshable cuddliness. My day might as well just stop here. I’m done….well,, maybe one more look….tooo mu…
Not fooled. thats totally a wee man in a panda pup suit!
Panda or huge black and white mousie?
