A Warm Welcome to the Spiney Lumpsucker!

We had never heard of this type of fish before either! But thanks to their blorp-tastic bods, paw-like appendages, and “party hats” THEY’VE ATTRACTED OUR ATTEN-SHONS and MADE IT ONTO CUTE OVERLOAD!

“The Spiny Lumpsuckers” would be a great name for a rock band.

I also like the little fan-like hoverfins. Buoyant blorp!

So adorable. I didn’t think fish could be adorable until cuteoverload. Except for puffer fish. I love those little guys.

I’ll be the first to say it. No Blorp tag? We needs one. Stat!

No fair! We were at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in May (parts of two days, no less) and never saw this little guy! Hmpf – there is a very disapproving look on my face right now.

They have adhesive pelvic disks! Which they will demonstrate for you if you ask nicely– see this pic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Toad_and_spiny_lumpsuckers.jpg
Evidently they evolved this appendage so that they can be worn as brooches to the fancy parties — hence the party hats!

How did they get that name? Spiny I can understand just looking at them but Lumpsuckers? A sucker of lumps? What lumps? Who’s lumps?
