Toitle Olympics, that is:
Game on, AJH81!
Och the wee turrrtle!
Save me from the wee turrrtles! They were too quick for me!
Why is that not flying? The turtle is in the air, not in the water!
Hey Lady! I’m FLYING! FLYING I TELL YOU! LET ME GO!YOU’LL SEE!
PUT HIM IN THE WATER ALREADY…GAH!!!
*ehnnn* “I knows I iz doing thees right, so why iz I not GETTING AWAY?!” *ehnnnn*

nope still haven’t moved
*fwap fwap fwap fwap fwap…..*
The reason the lady is explaining that, is that the baby turtles change from walking to swimming mode when they don’t feel the ground underneath them. If they feel the ground (or a hand) underneath them, they do a walking gait, alternating between right-front-leg-and-left-back-leg and left-front-leg-and-right-back-leg, but as soon as they feel weightless (i.e. in water, or if you lift them up), they start doing those swimming strokes.
Yet another thing I learned from the great Mr Fry. Here’s a clip, though there is a clearer demonstration of it at another point in the episode, but I cannot find that one online
I love Stephen Fry. He can narrate everything for the rest of my life.
I know it wouldn’t have been as good for filmimg but why not relaes them a little bit closer to the water?
That is the fastest I have ever seen turtles move!
When my knees are bothering me that is the same flapping motion my arms make as I try to get out of the chair. :D
Speaking of water animals check out this newly discovered crab – my question us how were they overlooked in the first place?!
And just in case you didn’t know turtles swim, let me say it one more time…”That’s a swimming motion. Swimming…S-W-I-M-M-I-N-G…..yep, swimming. All clear?”
While I think that this is adorable, please remember that you should NEVER interfere w/ a baby turtle that has just hatched; I live in Florida, these animals are endangered. You are supposed to never interfere w/ a hatchling that is heading for the water.
Me thinks he’s just waving “hi” frantically!
