Crustacean Frustracean

While the dashing and dutiful Australian Sheepdog may be the go-to breed for the landlocked rancher, let us not overlook an equally cagy creature, the Pacific Coast Crab Herder. Ever alert and lightning-fast, this wily breed darts and dances, guiding its quarry ever closer to the ocean… into which it then disappears, leaving the poor chump to wonder what just happened.

What, you thought we were talking about the dachshund? Please.

The crawly toys are the best! (my cats are just like this about spiders.)

Oh close tag, how you tease me. Sorry everyone.

I calls it “dyslexia of the fingers.”

I feel kinda bad for the little guy. There he is, all tail-wag-y, and then his buddy just -vanishes-! C’mere, little guy, we’ll go romp around the beach some more together!

  3. Birdcage says:

That’s a smart crab – always facing forward towards the pup and slow & steady zigzaggy progress towards the sea! Cute doxie. Glad she didn’t get her nose pinched.

    • Katie says:

      That’s what I was worried about–”Ooh, li’l doggy, that’s not a good toy!”

  4. tracylee says:

aww, this made me giggle and I really needed it… I really want to take Miss Schnozz to the beach :)

CO-ers, can I ask a favor? I need warm fuzzies sent out to my mom… our family dog crossed the bridge last night. 16 years is a good run, but it’s never long enough.

    • 260Oakley says:

No, they leave much too soon. Hugs to you and your family. Hope Miss Schnozz is doing her part to cheer you all up.

    • ceejoe says:

Warm hugs being sent to tracylee’s mom and tracylee too!

    • Rachael says:

Aww hon, I’m so sorry. I will send lots of good thoughts out to your mom. They always leave us too soon, no matter when. I do believe in the Rainbow Bridge and I hope your mom does too – it’s actually a great comfort. ♥♥♥

    • Ali-Baba says:

Fuzzies from my kittehs and me are on their way, tracylee!

My deepest sympathies, it is indeed never long enough.

    • Third Shift says:

      Aww. :( {{hugs}}

This vid makes me happy and makes me want to take my greyhound to the beach too! He’s getting older, he’s 11. This year it seems he’s slowed down quite a bit. He’s getting skinnier, I can’t even think of when he has to go. It’s darn hot here, y’all.

    • Sprock says:

No amount of time on this earth would ever be enough with our beloved dogs. Hugs to tracylee and family.

    • 6rabbits says:

My bunnies send out keeses to you…

    • tracylee says:

      Thanks everyone :D

I might forward this to mommalee (cute, mudbug!) so she can know how many sweet, caring people there are

      • Mamabear says:

Hope I’m not too late to offer my heartfelt condolences. Why can’t they live as long as parrots?

    • Madame X says:

A hug to you and your mom, tracylee. It is so hard to lose a friend! But his love remains with you always…

    • Janie4 says:

Hugs and love to your mom and you. They leave too soon, but as others have said, your dog is waiting at the rainbow bridge.

  5. M. Jones says:

Wonderful choice of musical accompaniment, especially the dramatic moments near the end

    • bob drummond says:

Yeah man , that musical banjo number was really appropriate ! I laughed as I watched the the two would be combatants dance around each other !

  6. 260Oakley says:

Good job playing shore-t stop, lil’ pup.

  7. Mary (the first) says:

That literally made me LOL!! Absolutely adorable. Love how the crab would stop with a baleful eye on the doxie.. pup meanwhile is bowing “play with me! c’mon! c’mon! why won’t you play with me??” And the sadness at the end when they’re parted, perhaps forever. Just wonderful!
And hugs sent to Tracylee and her family!

  8. NTMTOM, you’ve done it again: made me spray soda all over the computer screen for laughing so hard. Puppehs can and will try to play with just about any creature.

Hugs to Tracylee as well. It’s always terrible when you say goodbye to a pet. :-(

  9. Fird Birfle says:

    I LURVE the lobster-y and (hermit) crab(by) guyz !!! Clickety-clack and scamper-y !!!

Hope le/ la perro has had plenty of supportive talk therapy since the day at the beach!

Nice shots (lighting, sandy texture, etc), btw :)

YAY Mike, perro & crabby guy (“gal”? How DOES one determine gender of a crabby individual???? No, wait, I’m not convinced I should venture into the answer to that after all ….)

  10. Emmylee says:

This made me giggle. I love how inquisitive and “brave” puppers can be. lol

  11. edmundh says:

Crab looks like he came straight from Finding Nemo: “Hey, hey, heeyyy, HEEEYYYY”

    • Fird Birfle says:

was the critter in Finding Nemo, based on Cosby’s Fat Albert (Phila, PA) ???

  12. MinglesMommy says:

Crab: “What the frack is wrong with you, lady??? Buy a crab a drink first!”

  13. hyura says:

i love how there’s no one else on the beach. just the crab and the pup, and the person shooting the vid. beautiful!

  14. Ayeesha says:

That crab moves so gracefully. And craftily! Minus the small oops into the hole in the beginning. We’ll pretend we didn’t see that. :-)

    • Fird Birfle says:

      oops?? Wot oops???

*dons Denial Hat, BACKwards, o’ course ….*
      *pokes fingaires into both earses*

I CAN”T HEAR YOU LA LA LA LA LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  15. Mudbug says:

We’ve all concluded the pup was herding the crab but what if was really the other way around ? What if that crab trying to lure the pup into a game of Marco polo ?

Huge snorgles to Tracylee & Mommalee My demon spawn & I are so sorry for your loss.

  16. LauraH says:

I needed a cuteoverload fix, very cute Doxie, reminds me of our Benji whom we had when I was a child.
My beloved Siamese Jasper crossed the bridge yesterday, hardest decision I’ve ever made in my life. He would have been 19 on August 11. I literally was sobbing in bed last night.
Thank you cuteoverload for always being there to cheer up those of us who need it most.

    • 6rabbits says:

      It is indeed the hardest decision–I’ve been there twice. {{{{{LauraH}}}}}

    • Fird Birfle says:

ooooooh pauvre Laura & pauvre Jasper. Hopefully G-d & St. Peter decorated the Reception Window with extra rhinestones and cotton candy, last night, Laura !!!

Tell Jasper to look up my guy Salinger; tabby with some grey and kinda Abyssinian-lookin’ ear tufts & loooooooooooooooooong back laigs !!! They kin play something like Go Fish !!!

      • LauraH says:

Thanks, he’s hopefully hooked up with his sister Chelsea whom we lost last year. It’s the first time in almost 19 years that I don’t have a pet around me. Hopefully they’re having a mutual grooming session, though usually it was Chelsea making Jasper groom her after a few licks at him. I’m sure that Salinger is finding them, they know us cuteoverload peeps’ pets should stick together.

    • Theadosia says:

Hugs Laura. It’s never long enough, is it.

    • Ali-Baba says:

      My thoughts are with you, Laura. I lost my 17 y.o. tabby Tigger last year & the folks here at CO have really helped. They just get how much of a difference critters make in one’s life. {{{{{hugs}}}}}

My kitten, Ponyboy, loves to chase bugs around the house – especially stink bugs – and he always looks so sad and lonely when I catch the bug and throw it outside.

  19. fleurdamour says:

    Ninja crab eluded capture.

  20. Jade says:

Awww! I feel so sorry for the little one! He was so excited playing with the crab then it disappeared. He looks so disappointed :( But before all that, how hilarious!

  21. doomchild says:

The crab’s cuter than the pup :/ I’m afraid something’s wrong with me.

  22. Bia Fernandes says:

So cute! I used to have a dog who once got a mini crab hooked to his tiny nose in the
    beach!

    • Fird Birfle says:

      D’awwww pooah poochie !!!!
Bet that wuz the last time he/ she chased a lil’ crabby person !!

  23. lvasic says:
