I Have Nothing to Wear!

Why, Ms. Axolotl, at least you’re sporting the cutest hat for your CO debut!

Oh, this little thing? It’s for taking out the garbahj. I wouldn’t want to ruin any of my good hats.

Submitted by Fiona V., who wants to raise awareness about Axolotls, only the cutest amphibians ever, which happen to be critically endangered and near extinction in the wild.

    • Blue Footed Booby says:

This might just be the greatest work safe web comic I’ve ever seen.

  6. wendy says:

I have heard of them, but I didn’t realize that there were so few left in the wild. Fiona V., please tell us how we can help!

  9. Crazy Pants says:

Doesn’t it look like it might have been eating chocolate sloppily? Super cute, Pyrit!

    • lds7yrs says:

erm, you mean there is any other way to eat chocolate?
      *surreptitiously wipes face with sleeve*

      • Crazy Pants says:

HA! You are right, lds7yrs! Chocolate is best when when it’s all over your face.

        • victoreia says:

Unless, of course, it’s all in your mouth!

(Or better yet, in MY mouth!)

          • Alice Shortcake says:

It looks like someone passed out at an Axalotl party and ended up on the wrong end of a Sharpie.

    • elfdancer says:

I need to get this out of my system. Ahem:

Axolotl! Wait, we need Theo! It’s been a long time since we had a Dune outbreak!

Axolotl tanks = pretty icky technology of the Bene Tleilax. 8O Not as cute as this little critter.

  14. I saw these little guys for sale in Japan at a pet store! The store looked like a normal pet store except aside from the cats, dogs, and fish it also carried these Axolotls, squirrels, owls, a hawk, and gophers. It was a bizarre mini zoo.

    *puts teacher’s glasses on*
Cool fact about axolotls: they are the Peter Pans of the salamander world! Meaning, they (usually) never grow up! That cute lil one in the picture is actually the juvenile phase of the animal, and for some reason or other, they are able to reproduce while still in the juvenile phase, not needing to metamorphose into an adult phase (similar thing as if, say, a tadpole didn’t neet to turn into a frog to make new tadpoles). They can, however, metamorphose into the adult phase, if environmental conditions (I suppose work stress, mortgage, family issues…) induce it.
    *takes off glasses*

Who’s a cute widdle axolotl! You are!

    • 6rabbits says:

“They can, however, metamorphose into the adult phase, if environmental conditions (I suppose work stress, mortgage, family issues…) induce it.” *giggle, snerk*

This is what happens to puppies when you dump untreated raw political ad campaigns into the water ways.

  17. Victoria, Mom to 4 Rats says:

It is pretty cute, but cutest amphibian ever? My firebelly toads beg to differ!

    • skippymom says:

OK, Victoria, I just looked up fire belly toads. Yes, they are pretty cute. I think this matter will have to be resolved by an arm-wrestling match between them and the axolotols.

  18. Brook says:

    WANT.

  19. The Original Jane says:

Wow. I seriously thought someone drew a face on the back of it’s head or it’s rear or something. That looks so much like the faces every little kid draws. You know: “This is me, this is my sister, that’s my dad, that’s my mom and that’s my house and that’s the clouds….” you get the picture.

Glad to learn about a creature I hadn’t heard of before.

  20. Nikki says:

See?! This is EXACTLY why love Cute Overload! It’s not just the “usual cute suspects”: kittens, hamsters, etc.. Nope. You feature the fantastically unusual too! What other site would feature these adorable endangered little guys?! I just love it here in CO Land.

  21. 6rabbits says:

Knew about the Axolotl, but this one is way cuter than the one in our endangered species book! And I had no idea you could keep one as a pet!!!

  22. AlienGuardian says:

My 8th grade science teacher had two axolotls, a black one and an albino. They sure were cute!

  23. Nanette says:

THIS IS WHAT SEA MONKEYS WERE SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE!! *ahem..sorry for yelling*

  24. kodalai says:

But how can axolotls possibly be endangered when they have the baddassest superpower of all?

Lots of animals can regrow parts of their bodies, but the axolotl trumps them all: It can grow back full limbs, eyes, jaws and even hearts. Not impressive enough for you? It’s also the only vertebrate that can regrow parts of its brain. Sometimes they’ll even lose a leg and grow back two. You know, while they’re at it.

    • that'sprettycool says:

That’s amazing! And more amazing is that some pharma company hasn’t stepped in to protect them whilst they learn from this ability. Because in the future, we’re going to need, ya know, livers and stuff.

  25. HomoDM says:

Only the albino ones are cute. The pigmented ones.. not so much.

  26. Claire says:

Yes! I have been trying to convince my friends that amphibians, like this little guy plus salamanders and newts, are seriously adorable. It’s a tough sell, but they all have such great smiles. And they live in wetlands (the best habitat ever)!

  27. nads says:
  28. I had no idea that the creepy dude from Animal Crossing looked so much like the real thing!

  29. Megumi's Mom says:

cute! and I’m slightly freaked out, because I’ve worked on THIS for 2 days and finished it last night before seeing this post…

I’ve only been planning to make him for about a week… kept getting tied up finishing other projects for other people.

  30. Pam says:

I used to see these or something like them in the wild prairie canons of my youth. We called them mud puppies. They lived in the shallow waters of small canons out west.

  31. Fird Birfle says:

If THIS is a Real Critter, then
evidently Salvadore Dali must have taken over the Universe….

  32. Mary Kay Kidd says:

    Thank you, Fiona V.!

  33. In Japan they call these little guys “Oopa Loopa”!
