Why, Ms. Axolotl, at least you’re sporting the cutest hat for your CO debut!
Oh, this little thing? It’s for taking out the garbahj. I wouldn’t want to ruin any of my good hats.

Submitted by Fiona V., who wants to raise awareness about Axolotls, only the cutest amphibians ever, which happen to be critically endangered and near extinction in the wild.

Aww it looks like the water dogs I used to have when I was little! How cute!
Wait THAT’S what an axolotl is? I thought you were just making an old-school MAD magazine reference!
Holy crap! You mean that’s a real animal?? It’s delightfully adorbs!
im pretty sure thats a pokemon
It’s Mudkip!
no i think its a wooper!
http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Wooper_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29
LOL! Wow, you’re good.
From that link: “Wooper seems to be based on a larval axolotl, which have flat tails and feathery, external gills. Its Shiny sprite also matches its color to that of a larval or albino/leucistic axolotl.” So right you are, Daniel!
http://www.battlepug.com. If you want to learn more about fire-breathing Axolotls. Plus giant pugs are adorable.
This might just be the greatest work safe web comic I’ve ever seen.
now trending on Google as everyone searches Axolotls to make sure this is legit. SO CUTE!! How can we save them?
Adorable. I googled it to be sure. It looks like a toy:)
same here. I raised and eyebrow, then ran to the interwebs to check it out.
I also googled it. After that “cute” baby monkey episode the other day, I wasn’t taking any chances.
I just figured out a way to get everyone to download viruses and not even know it. hhehehehehehe. Signed Evil Kitty
Don’t even think of it you rat !!!
I have heard of them, but I didn’t realize that there were so few left in the wild. Fiona V., please tell us how we can help!
OMG! Really cute pics:
http://www.treehugger.com/natural-sciences/ubercool-mexican-walking-fish-nearing-extinction.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axolotl
They are native to Mexico. They are nearly extinct because their habitat has been mostly destroyed, pollution, and the release of invasive, non-native Asian carp.
A sanctuary is being built for them, and, apparently, some people keep them as pets.
About to say, don’t they live mostly in isolated aquifer caves in near darkness? Or did Richard Attenborough lie to me?
I think you mean David; Richard is a director/actor (grandpa in Jurassic Park) while David is the presenter of the best nature programmes evah created!
No, I’m pretty sure Richard Attenborough lied to her.
I read non-native Asian crap and was very confudes of a second
We have two of them as pets! Adopted from a university lab that uses them for research. They’re currently about two inches long.
Doesn’t it look like it might have been eating chocolate sloppily? Super cute, Pyrit!
erm, you mean there is any other way to eat chocolate?
*surreptitiously wipes face with sleeve*
HA! You are right, lds7yrs! Chocolate is best when when it’s all over your face.
Unless, of course, it’s all in your mouth!
(Or better yet, in MY mouth!)
It looks like someone passed out at an Axalotl party and ended up on the wrong end of a Sharpie.
I need to get this out of my system. Ahem:
“In my Easter bonnet/With all the frills upon it…”
I’ve been loving axolotls for years, but this is the cutest one I have ever seen.
And what about this?
http://www.coolest-birthday-cakes.com/coolest-axolotl-cake-1.html
Gotta say, that is a VERY creative cake!
She looks like she might have a little schmoots on her face.
Time for a spit bath!
It’s very cute but I’ll pass on the spit bath, you can do it.
Axolotl! Wait, we need Theo! It’s been a long time since we had a Dune outbreak!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technology_of_the_Dune_universe#Axlotl_tank
Axolotl tanks = pretty icky technology of the Bene Tleilax.
Not as cute as this little critter.
Well, that reference just doubly made my day.
I’m always charming my friends with my Feyd impersonation: I -will- kill him!
Sting-as-Fayd? OMG, just thinking about that makes me LMAO.
My personal fave is the lisping Alia: “For he ITH the Kwithattth Haderach!”
O! M! G! I knew that word was familiar!
The spice must flow, Victoreia.
I saw these little guys for sale in Japan at a pet store! The store looked like a normal pet store except aside from the cats, dogs, and fish it also carried these Axolotls, squirrels, owls, a hawk, and gophers. It was a bizarre mini zoo.
*puts teacher’s glasses on*
Cool fact about axolotls: they are the Peter Pans of the salamander world! Meaning, they (usually) never grow up! That cute lil one in the picture is actually the juvenile phase of the animal, and for some reason or other, they are able to reproduce while still in the juvenile phase, not needing to metamorphose into an adult phase (similar thing as if, say, a tadpole didn’t neet to turn into a frog to make new tadpoles). They can, however, metamorphose into the adult phase, if environmental conditions (I suppose work stress, mortgage, family issues…) induce it.
*takes off glasses*
Who’s a cute widdle axolotl! You are!
“They can, however, metamorphose into the adult phase, if environmental conditions (I suppose work stress, mortgage, family issues…) induce it.” *giggle, snerk*
This is what happens to puppies when you dump untreated raw political ad campaigns into the water ways.
SNORK
It is pretty cute, but cutest amphibian ever? My firebelly toads beg to differ!
OK, Victoria, I just looked up fire belly toads. Yes, they are pretty cute. I think this matter will have to be resolved by an arm-wrestling match between them and the axolotols.
WANT.
Wow. I seriously thought someone drew a face on the back of it’s head or it’s rear or something. That looks so much like the faces every little kid draws. You know: “This is me, this is my sister, that’s my dad, that’s my mom and that’s my house and that’s the clouds….” you get the picture.
Glad to learn about a creature I hadn’t heard of before.
See?! This is EXACTLY why love Cute Overload! It’s not just the “usual cute suspects”: kittens, hamsters, etc.. Nope. You feature the fantastically unusual too! What other site would feature these adorable endangered little guys?! I just love it here in CO Land.
Knew about the Axolotl, but this one is way cuter than the one in our endangered species book! And I had no idea you could keep one as a pet!!!
My 8th grade science teacher had two axolotls, a black one and an albino. They sure were cute!
THIS IS WHAT SEA MONKEYS WERE SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE!! *ahem..sorry for yelling*
I know! Why dint they?
But how can axolotls possibly be endangered when they have the baddassest superpower of all?
Lots of animals can regrow parts of their bodies, but the axolotl trumps them all: It can grow back full limbs, eyes, jaws and even hearts. Not impressive enough for you? It’s also the only vertebrate that can regrow parts of its brain. Sometimes they’ll even lose a leg and grow back two. You know, while they’re at it.

That’s amazing! And more amazing is that some pharma company hasn’t stepped in to protect them whilst they learn from this ability. Because in the future, we’re going to need, ya know, livers and stuff.
Only the albino ones are cute. The pigmented ones.. not so much.
Yes! I have been trying to convince my friends that amphibians, like this little guy plus salamanders and newts, are seriously adorable. It’s a tough sell, but they all have such great smiles. And they live in wetlands (the best habitat ever)!
Also the subject of a fantastic short story:
http://sayberklas.tripod.com/anthology_short_stories_in_english/id32.html
I had no idea that the creepy dude from Animal Crossing looked so much like the real thing!
cute! and I’m slightly freaked out, because I’ve worked on THIS for 2 days and finished it last night before seeing this post…
http://www.flickr.com/photos/trinlayk/7345311202/in/photostream
I’ve only been planning to make him for about a week… kept getting tied up finishing other projects for other people.
I used to see these or something like them in the wild prairie canons of my youth. We called them mud puppies. They lived in the shallow waters of small canons out west.
If THIS is a Real Critter, then
evidently Salvadore Dali must have taken over the Universe….
Thank you, Fiona V.!
In Japan they call these little guys “Oopa Loopa”!
WHAT! IS! THAT!?
Ahem, he is my beautiful axolotl, Sandy! More photos of him at my Flickr account here – http://www.flickr.com/photos/alltheaces/tags/sandy/
