Aupossum Bon Pain

Pastries put up a good fight – but I def-eated ‘em!

Everyone is going to start singing I Ate Too Moishe, Anne L. who says “Apparently, this opossum broke into the bakery, snorted up some pastries and was too full to run away!”

Comments

  1. i was hoping this pic would make it to CO!! sooo cute!!!

  2. Theresa says:

BTW, guys, it’s Purim– get some delicious Hamantashen!

  3. I suspect this Possum is in league with the window-licking Fox

  4. 260Oakley says:

He couldn’t stop ’cause he was on a roll…

  5. 260Oakley says:

…but then he found himself in a bit of a jam.

  6. Snowpea says:

BTW that sweet-toothed critter is an Australian Possum, not an American Opossum.

  7. I know how he feels, that’s what I’m like around pastries, too.

  8. shinyrhubarb says:

Awww sugar coma! He/shes looks like a baby Australian brush-tailed possum. They are such sweet lil critters (no pun intended). Does anyone know where this pic came from? .

  9. Theresa says:

Must be jam ’cause jelly don’t roll like that. :P

  10. shinyrhubarb says:

Wow you try to find the origin of a cute pic and you are suddenly sucked into the spiral of the possum-gate conspiracy! Fascinating.

  11. I ate too moishe
Too moishe is what I ate
I ate too moishe, I ate too moishe, I ate too moishe
    I-I-I-I-I aaaaaaaaaaaaaate toooooooooooooooo moooooooooooooiiiiiish-ah!

    *bows*

  12. Mary (the first) says:

    *golf clap*

  13. Kari Callin says:

“Wha’? You can’t prove a thing! I didn’t touch even ONE of these..ooh, is that raspberry?! “

  14. Infoaddict says:

… a brush-tailed possum, to be precise (geez I hope I’m right and it doesn’t turn out to be a ring-tailed possum. But they have a little bare patch at the end). Our possums are, I’m afraid to say, MUCH cuter than American opossums. Also, they don’t play dead.

Woozy on sugar overload, however, is an entirely different box of pastries …

This pic’s been doing the rounds of Australia; last I heard the bakery was in Darwin, but there could be some chinese whispers happening.

  15. SlaveToCat says:

I feel your pain little guy……. Passes the alkaseltzer.

  16. SlaveToCat says:

Such a sticky buns situation to try to get out of…

  17. Looks like he chewed a hole to get into the box and then ate so much he couldn’t get through it again to get out

  18. SlaveToCat says:

Can I poke him in the belly……please……..

  19. He scone to have to go on a diet after eating all those sweets.

  20. 6Rabbits says:

    8O

  21. You too, huh? Move over, possum, and make room for me and Jolly!

  22. Ver’ nice, JMB.

  23. Like that Winnie the Pooh story where Pooh visits Rabbit and eats too much to get back out the door. I always liked the bit about Rabbit using Pooh’s back legs as towel racks.

  24. I donut think he should be sneaking into bakeries, at least… be be’ar claw his way to the exit before someone catches him!

  25. Theresa says:

OHHHH! You mean before they choux him away. :P

  26. Fess up, peeps, this has been a dream of yours since you were a kid.

    Don’t deny it.

  27. Judging by the rows in the box I’d say a possum’s limit is 6-8 pastries before collapse!

  28. Yes, it looks much more adorabulz than American possums. i wondered at first if it was a baby one because it was cute.

  29. “Ooof, I no canz run away. Mah belleh is too full!”

Aww, look at his fat little tummy. He’s like, “Yeah, I totally stole your pastries… but I’m too full to run away.”

  30. I don’t have the info in front of me, but I remember reading that this was in the catering area of the special events section of an Australian nature center of some sort. The pastries were for an event, when this was what they found when they got in. They took the little guy to the vet section for a bit to make sure he was going to be OK and then let him go.

Of course, I read it on the internet so who knows. But I hope that’s true

  31. emmberrann says:

    A cinnamon roll….

  32. emmberrann says:

If you do, you better be prepared for what squooshes out… and I won’t be responsible!

  33. emmberrann says:

    ” I can’t believe I ate the Whole Thing… “

  34. emmberrann says:

[Tag line for an old Alka-Seltzer commercial]

  35. Cool, thanks for the background! So interesting.

Hope Aussie possie didn’t go into sugar coma.

  36. And that’s why this possie got caught red- (errrrr) handed?….pawed? Red-NECKED. Oh this is the RARE Australian brush-tailed, raspberry-jellied, red-necked possum.

Give this fuzzy nugget a bib.

  37. rescue gal says:

Thank you. I was actually worried what might have happened to him/her.

  38. Thank you, because I was thinking that isn’t a possum.

  39. That was a really interesting link. The blogger makes an excellent point about knowing your sources. It has me questioning whether or not the little love is alive which makes me sad.

  40. Malle Babbe says:

I’ll be honest, I was a bit worried that this little guy might have ended up with more than indigestion, it seems that there are a lot of foods that are all right for humans but can make animals really sick.

Glad to know that the pastry bandit was OK.

  41. Speecy-spicy meat-a-balls!

  42. pinkmariposa says:

first time I found one of these critters sorta, kinda cute-sy
secondly he could not leave as he came in thru a hole he made in
wall and well obvi he doesn’t fit anymore…LOL

silly, silly, greedy lil guy oh my

  43. me too

  44. Theresa says:

    Beency bouncy meetballs!

  45. Its not an Opossum, its a Possum…of the Australian kind :P

  46. janelle11 says:

    It’s a Meme apparently.
    Source unknown.
    Possibly photoshopped
An unscrupulous company is claiming it as its own.

  47. “Can I haz pastry?”

  48. Don’t know what that is but that bloated belly is insane. Reminds me of Templeton from Charlotte’s Web for some reason.

  49. Welcome to the C.O. Mod lounge, I’ll be your waiter tonight (as soon as I can move)
Oh, there are margaritas & apple martinis over there in the corner.

  50. Thank you, Kar! Templeton he is and shall be! And he just finished singing his song about all the wonderful foods at the State Fair.

  51. Rachel of Cyberia says:

The fair is a marvelous smorgasbord-orgasbord-orgasbord!

  52. ULTIMATE cute pic of all time how how cute is that ? Love it!! thanks made my day.

  53. The left pawseee on the tum and then the right one on the side of the box. He looks like he’s gunna barf but i luvs it!

In NZ these guys are an enormous pest and hate to tell you this but we kill them with gay abandon. We esp. like them as roadkill cos then you don’t have to actually touch them. They’re viscious little ##*@#***!

  54. Aussie brushtails are tough. Known as the garbage disposal units of the possum world – they heave the lids of bins and eat a wide range of foods. Obvi some things are not that good for them – but once off – if he has a decent diet – will be OK

  55. Ungh.

  56. Fird Birfle says:

    Hur-ta-dur !!!

*waves pompoms for the Swedish Chef (doing Eye-talliano meata-balls-a) AND
    for the ever-t0rtured Beaker*

  57. Fird Birfle says:

Where’s Maru, when these boxes need adjustment??

  58. For all the people worried about this article. It Brush Tailed Possums are protected in Australia and it is illegal to kill them so it is very unlikely that the possum was killed. If it is dead it would most likely be road kill, which seems unlikely from looking at the picture. I used to do animal rescue and was lucky enough to work with a few of these cuties and him breaking in and eating all the pastries seems to me, the most likely scenario. They often live in peoples roof cavities and if they live in the suburbs are not at all wary of people and will break into houses a bit like Racoons do in the US.

As a side note that knife roll makes me think its a professional kitchen not a bakery.

  59. Peeps, go to the link that Shiningrhubarb posted above. The story behind this picture is far more complicated and unclear than you might think…

  60. Thank you. I am available for weddings, bar mitzvahs, and puppy/kitten showers.

  61. SlaveToCat says:

I think Maru has an app for that. (Might require cleaning the box first).

  62. Blue Footed Booby says:

I will forever more call the Australian brush tailed possum Aupossum.

  63. Oh my, what a cutie pie! It’s the Homer Simpson of the animal world. Look at that belleh…so pokeable and squishy. Wish our American possums were this cute.

  64. How about an exchange? I’ll send you my raccoons and you can send me your possums. My dad would feed the little bandits and now I can’t get rid of them. Oh, and how about some skunks? I found a family sitting in the kitchen eating the cat food. Fortunately, I opened the door and they left leaving only a little smell behind them.

  65. Hee Hee. I love us!

  66. What?? No pastries?!?

  67. Very enlightening article. Thank you for sharing that.

  68. TrixandSam says:

    8O

  69. irritablevowel says:

For the record, what we in the US have are opossums, *not* possums.

  70. Unless you’re in the South, like I am. Then they’re possums. :)

The house I lived in before my current abode had high hedges around the living room windows. One evening, I was sitting in my rocking chair next to the window and watching TV or reading or somesuch. I just happened to turn to my left and look out the window–I don’t recall why–but there was a possum hanging on the window screen outside. It’s difficult to say who was the more surprised. 8O

  71. Ali-Baba says:

Does that make him the Pillsbury Dough Possum?! ;-) tee-hee!

  72. Get me some coffee and then get out of my face… I need a nap.

  73. HOW DID THEY GET IN 8O 8-O

  74. I agree. :) I’d probably have jelly all over me too like the little possum does.

  75. Miss Olive says:

    *poke*

  76. Michelle says:

My thoughts exactly. Is that jam or blood?

  77. Fleurdamour says:

I briefly lived in New Orleans in a shotgun shack and one night I heard rustling in the kitchen. A baby possum squeezed through a small crack between the roof and the back porch. He mangled a box of saltines.

  78. victoreia says:

    The dishwasher ate the pastries…..

  79. Squish.

  80. Theresa says:

Hey, I’m sure Skippymom would be interested in this.

  81. I wonder if the little stinker did not come back some time later for the rest of those pastries, Wendy.

  82. Make room for me too :D

  83. raineysb says:

Even the possum are cuter in Australia. Have you seen US possums? Dude, not cute, more large, drowned albino rat-ish than “cute.” Are they related animals?

  84. janelle11 says:

I’m still here! 12 hours later!

  85. Yes! To be specific, it is a Brushtail Possum :)

  86. I was thinking the same thing, that it wasn’t a possum. Australian ones seem to be MUCH MUCH cuter than the North American variety!
