THIS JUST IN: Baby Klopspanner… er, Kripsparkler… um, Cute Sproingy Thing

The Mesker Park Zoo in Evansville, Indiana is proud to welcome a new baby klupsprinkler… er, klipspringer. Meaning “rock jumper” in Afrikaans, the karpspanker is a relative of the antelope native to southern Africa. The new baby is one of about 30 kryptospelunkers in zoos across America.

You crack me up, NTMTOM! I have no idea what this little one is, but I have a lot of names for what it is not. Whatever it is called, it is 100 percent adorable.

    Dem ears!

  5. belphebe says:

Inquiring minds want to know: would a kryptospelunker be searching caves for kryptonite?

(And can I go sproinging with this baby when he/she does go searching?)

      • doomchild says:

And every front yard needs a klupsprinkler! Nothing makes the grass green like klup, sprinkled evenly about by little hooves and moist nosies.

Ahhh, oh god! Help me! Hold me! What IS that?! *heart rate increases to 130 BPM* Why is it so cuuute?!! It’s leetle clenchy, hoof-y, cloven-y footed feets! *having trouble breathing* What?! I don’t understand! Please just hold me hand. *curls into fetal position* Why are its eyes so plink-y, shiny, mezmerizin’?!! What’s with the mouf?! Dear lord, the bitty teefers!! *starts sucking thumb* It’s looking into my very soul! Why?! *Ded of the qte*

On a totally non-crazy note. Anyone else notice what looks like a shaved place on his neck? Had blood pulled perchance? No, wait, I’m thinking it’s so his leetle ascot fits better against the neck.

We have those right here on Table Mountain! They’re so tiny and sweet but very shy. They look just like real bokkies (antelope to yous folks) that have shrunk.

It just occurred to me that we have lots of things with “spring” in the name: springbok (our national animal and rugby team), springkaan (grasshopper), springmielies (popcorn – “mielies” are what we call corn). I’m sure I’m forgetting lots :) .

Being the youngest gifted member of the ballet company, many were in awe of her speed and technical ability to master being on pointe at so young an age!

  29. Claire says:

Wait wait wait, you forgot the most precious fun fact ever! The little klipspringers are strictly monogamous and stay within a few feet of their mate at all times, taking turns eating and watching for predators. (Source: Zooborns)

    • LauraH says:

Just like the Dik Diks that I saw in Arica, wee little creatures that stay with their mate. If you see one look carefully because its mate will be very close. I fell in love with those wee animals, they were my favourite of the whole trip.
