I can’t decide which one is cuter! Yes the small one is small and has a really cute bodily position, but the mama’s expression is so cute and she is all curled up and comfy! I LOVE that reflex! We’d call it “The Crab” and would say, “He’s quite startled” every time our boys did this as babies.

While I was researching the nursing question (several posts below) I ran across some information on the birthing question, on this breeder’s site http://hedgehogsbyvickie.com/babyalbum.htm (there are also photos, for anyone interested). I apologize for the all caps but I’m not going to retype them.

For some reason, looking at this photo, I too had that same thought — how do baby hedgehogs nurse? (They must nurse, they’re mammals, and “feeding the young with milk” is one of, like, only 2 or 3 things all mammals have in common [hair is another, and I'm not sure if there's a third -- it's not live birth, some mammals lay eggs]). So, there must be nipples somewhere among all those tummy spines on mommy. And I guess baby puts his nose in veeeeeerrrry slowly and carefully?

Yes, mammals all have live birth. The furry animals that lay eggs are monotremes, not mammals (duck billed platypus, for example).
For I think I recall that the milk comes out and the baby licks it off the spines.
Not to be contrary, but monotremes ARE a kind of mammal. If you doubt me, try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monotreme or http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/monotreme . (Marsupials and placental are the other two kinds of mammals.)
As for how hedgehogs nurse, apparently the mother in the photo is curled up into a protective ball, but she has soft (that is, normal) fur on her belly, which is concealed in the photo.
