For Every Wise Old Owl…

…there’s a stupid young owl convinced that shadows are just really flat mice.

  2. He is just practicing…same as my puppy who barks at his reflection in the window at night. I love him….scoops up and runs.

  3. Yeah, cute little baby that wants to RIP MY EYES OUT! :-P

  4. Blue Footed Booby says:

I love the juxtaposition of raptor ferocity with…that. It’s like watching a great white shark flip over for tummy rubs.

  5. “I call this one…Death from Above! Nyerhe!
I call this one…Silent but Deadly! Nyerhe!
    I call this one–squirrel!

I call this one…The Flying Nom! Nyerhe! Omnom…”

  7. Oh…my God, “moist owlette”! Brilliant!

  8. Wonder how he’d react to a lazer pointer like the ones for cats. Bet he’d go all owl pellet for it! :P

  9. 260Oakley says:

Dope is the thing with feathers.

  10. Me and my shadow
We’re closer than pages that stick in a book
We’re closer than ripples that play in a brook
    Strolling down the avenue

  11. LOL, that reminds me of my dachshund who chase the seagull shadows at the beach.

  12. What’s the matter Mr. Owl, does the moon not cast shadows?

  13. Fird Birfle says:

Where did they find this footage, from me as a child???? :)

  14. Practice makes fierce!

LOVE the look into the camera at the very end!!

  15. Norbertsmom says:

OMG – somebody get him something to eat!

  16. Mr. Big-Eyed Cutie-Owl is so angry and fierce! “Cower, human! Wait, what…what, put me down! Stop squishing and hugging me! I’m mad, dag’nabbit!”

  17. Oh good lord, that is adorable! He is so fierce and so determined!!!

I LOVE the look straight into the camera at the end, lol. He’s all “What?!?! I’m the hunter!”

  18. Moi, Actually says:

What Jane said. Perhaps a fat mouse?

  19. He’s obviously under the influence of some kind of drug. I mean just look how dilated his pupils are.

  20. owls sometimes remind me of cats. same sort of face.

someone throw this cute little guy a mouse or a shrew puhhhleez!!

  21. Killer Klown says:

He needs to meet the Hungry Feroshus Bear.

  22. so true…

  23. LMAO!!!!

  24. Dickinson was writing about owls???? If I had known that . . . . .

    Oakley for the win–again!

  25. Just what I was thinking! It’s a cat with two legs and feathers. So cute. :)

  26. Hey I collect owls, can I have this one for my collection?
Pleeeeeease with sugar on it and a cherry on top!

  27. Aww poor little doll! This is why I can’t play with the laser pointer with my cat… I feel so sad she doesn’t have anything to grab and rip up!

  28. Would it be safe to hug him?

  29. Me too! I’ve always thought owls & cats to be eerily similar!

  30. i read somewhere recently that the Japanese word for owl is translated as “hawk with cat’s face” or something like that. cool idea, i don’t know if it’s true…
any speakers of Japanese in da house?

  31. OMG that poor little thing!!! I agree, someone get it a mouse!!! And I totally agree with you jen!

  32. LOL Baby Owl = baby Kiotten with feathers.

    Hehehehehehe!!!!!

  33. Shifty Eyes::: Kitten!

Harumphs at my pathetic typing skills

  34. Pickled Beatnik says:

The coolest part about this is that you consider that owls are just cats with wings. Predatory, carnivorous hunters who learn to hunt through play. So amazing!!

  35. Anyone who has ever done a zillion lunges on a step platform at the health club knows what this is all about.

  36. The take at :13 is hilarious.

  37. cellarmouse says:

he’s all “ok … waddya do wif me mousie? i knows yer hidin’ him someplace…”

  38. At :13, he’s like all “You think I’M stupid – YOU’RE WATCHING THIS!”

  39. Flutterby says:

Still giggling at feroshus owlet attacking shadow mice, then turning to the camera as if to say WHATCHOO LOOKIN’ AT????

  40. I thought for a minute he was about to bonk his widdle head on the gate.

  41. It’s Chinese: the everyday name for owl is 猫头鹰 (Mao Tou Jing), cat-headed eagle/hawk.

I believe the Japanese name for owl is fukurou, which comes from Classical Chinese character for owl – 梟 (xiao). That word also means fierce, so I guess we all had same ideas about the owl :)

  42. Flutterby says:

Heh, heh…acts like he already bonked his haid on the gate!!!

  43. bwahahahahaha!

  44. LOVE the look at the camera at the end ! So fierce ! So full of drama……..
(cue the drama music ) http://www.dramabutton.com/

  45. ItsyBitsyTeenyWeenie says:

The owls are not what they seem.

  46. joools in PDX says:

Wow. That’s awesome. And I do not use that word lightly.
    (Genuflects in tracylee’s direction)

  47. fleurdamour says:

It’s pretty clear to me that he’s tap dancing. Nice moves, Errol.

  48. lol, well-said! :)

  49. I would love to see what he would do on an owl-size trampoline.

  50. That was exactly what I thought of! Is there a “Dramatic Owl” yet? ‘cuz this guy would make a good candidate.

  51. How many kicks does it take to get to the centre of a flat carpet mouse?
    One . . . two-whoo . . . three . . . four . . . 0:15 wtf . . . jillion!

  52. This is the owl equivalent of a cat chasing its tail (and not catching it!)

  53. For some reason, I feel like the commentary going through lil’ Owl’s head was a little like this every time he/she looked up:

Maybe I’m wrong…but gosh I feel like that’s just it!

  54. owl says “mmmmm fat mouse” much better than a shadow I suppose, maybe they should name the owl Peter Pan.

  55. LOVE the look @ :12. He’s all….”OMG YOU SEE IT TOO RIGHT?!?! RIGHT?!?!”

  56. Fird Birfle says:

    BEST COMMERCIAL EVAHR !!!!!!

    *Crowd roars its approval*

  57. I know! He’s all WTF

  58. He maybe confused about shadows, but he sure is fast at jumping on it the nanosecond it appears.

  59. HAW!

  60. The Original Jane says:

This dialogue could be straight out of Stewie’s mouth on Family Guy.

  61. So adorable! I guess this is why owls hunt at night. :)

  62. victoreia says:

*irritable voice* I meant to do that!

  63. victoreia says:

Thank you, I needed that. Especially with Mike’s commentary!

  64. that was my exact thought…:D

  65. yeah, he’s being all goofy then suddenly freezes with that crazy eyes look!

  66. *Sage Old Owl voice*

“What you must learn, young grasshopper, is that we are all in a cave, metaphorically, only playing with our own shadows on the walls. To learn your true self, you must first learn your own shadow. To catch the mouse, you must first catch its shadow. When you have caught the shadow of the mouse, come back to me and I will teach you the Way of the Owl.”

  67. I was just thinking this too! so goofy but with such a serious face!

  68. thanks, wuyizidi, wise one. :)
(btw my autocorrect just had a field day with your name! which I’ve always read as why-you-dizzy until I actually had to type it out…)

  69. Thank you…Glad to know I’m not the only one thinking that. ‘Course those owls aren’t nearly so cute.

    But Cooper sure was!

  70. It finally just hit me! The Black Knight with his lunge and thrust (none of that, now) and “Have at you!”

*looks around for nods of agreement, but hears only crickets*

  71. I burst out loud laughing when he froze and looked right at the camera at 0:13!

  72. Amused myself by putting my cursor over the spot he was attacking, then flicking it away. Yes, I’m easily amused. Especially when I poked him and he looked up at me.

  73. Exactly what I was thinking. What an adorable ball of fluffage. Enh!!

  74. And think about it – both cats AND owls in reality and mythology have always been thought of as magical creatures and used as familiars by witches and wizards. :D

  75. I kinda like Kiotten – maybe it should be an alternate spelling?

Maybe that could be a baby otter?

  76. It´s so cute! It plays just like a kitten, including the head tiltingz and getting easily distracted. All we need is a butt wiggle and we have a kitten with wings. :)

  77. Queen of Dork says:

Yeah, he’s like, “Watchoo lookin’ at? You want some of this? I am Baby Owl. I am fierce. I am hunter. (but also, I am love.)

  78. Emmberrann says:

Bebeh owl is in school! He learnin’ to be Big Owl! Owls is predatorbird with big clawses on toes (better to grip mices wit’), and he practice on somethin’. If all them shadows was mice, he would have Big Owl Indigestion from eatin’em all. You go, Bebeh Owl, you practice them Big Owl moves!

  79. This is so cute! I am wondering where the owl is. There is a leg band on the right leg, as you are looking at the baby owl and it is in a hand made wooden cage. I would like to know a little more about this.

  80. “Can you believe this s***?” :P

  81. monkeylover says:

    i iz owl :)

  82. monkeylover says:

  85. He iz very cute! I like the way he looks at the camera too…

  86. I don’t like the description, He isn’t stupid…..He is just playing or trying to learn what to do. He is VERY cute though.

  87. I’ve been chasing shadows all my life

  88. lol. I started using that name years ago on a forum about Chinese culture. Later on some people asked me to save my longer postings to a blog. The blogging site I chose was WordPress, same as this site. When I started posting here my name was already defaulted to that. Otherwise I would’ve chosen something easier to spell and more site appropriate, like Claws_Nomi.

  89. Linda Reinhart says:

baby-anythings always cop a break though, and owls…well owls are
always just full of themselves, aren’t they!

  90. Both keeell you with baby qte-ness……

  91. too cute to be true!
