  2. Val says:

He is just practicing…same as my puppy who barks at his reflection in the window at night. I love him….scoops up and runs.

  3. Yeah, cute little baby that wants to RIP MY EYES OUT! :-P

  4. Blue Footed Booby says:

I love the juxtaposition of raptor ferocity with…that. It’s like watching a great white shark flip over for tummy rubs.

  5. blair says:

“I call this one…Death from Above! Nyerhe!
I call this one…Silent but Deadly! Nyerhe!
    I call this one–squirrel!

I call this one…The Flying Nom! Nyerhe! Omnom…”

  6. tracylee says:

d’aww what a cutie patootie little vicious birdy of prey! I love watching his little feetsies curl up!
    ….

if he gets caught in the rain, does he become a Moist Owlet?

  7. Mamabear says:

Wonder how he’d react to a lazer pointer like the ones for cats. Bet he’d go all owl pellet for it! :P

  8. 260Oakley says:

Dope is the thing with feathers.

    • CathyDee says:

Dickinson was writing about owls???? If I had known that . . . . .

      Oakley for the win–again!

  9. gizmo says:

    Me and my shadow
We’re closer than pages that stick in a book
We’re closer than ripples that play in a brook
    Strolling down the avenue

  10. erick says:

LOL, that reminds me of my dachshund who chase the seagull shadows at the beach.

  11. wuyizidi says:

What’s the matter Mr. Owl, does the moon not cast shadows?

  12. Fird Birfle says:

Where did they find this footage, from me as a child???? :)

  13. Zenabean says:

    Practice makes fierce!

LOVE the look into the camera at the very end!!

  14. Norbertsmom says:

OMG – somebody get him something to eat!

  15. Jiffknee says:

Mr. Big-Eyed Cutie-Owl is so angry and fierce! “Cower, human! Wait, what…what, put me down! Stop squishing and hugging me! I’m mad, dag’nabbit!”

  16. Rumi says:

Oh good lord, that is adorable! He is so fierce and so determined!!!

I LOVE the look straight into the camera at the end, lol. He’s all “What?!?! I’m the hunter!”

  17. Adam says:

He’s obviously under the influence of some kind of drug. I mean just look how dilated his pupils are.

  18. jen says:

owls sometimes remind me of cats. same sort of face.

someone throw this cute little guy a mouse or a shrew puhhhleez!!

    • Rumi says:

      so true…

    • jujube says:

Just what I was thinking! It’s a cat with two legs and feathers. So cute. :)

    • Grace says:

Me too! I’ve always thought owls & cats to be eerily similar!

    • ashagato says:

i read somewhere recently that the Japanese word for owl is translated as “hawk with cat’s face” or something like that. cool idea, i don’t know if it’s true…
any speakers of Japanese in da house?

      • wuyizidi says:

It’s Chinese: the everyday name for owl is 猫头鹰 (Mao Tou Jing), cat-headed eagle/hawk.

I believe the Japanese name for owl is fukurou, which comes from Classical Chinese character for owl – 梟 (xiao). That word also means fierce, so I guess we all had same ideas about the owl :)

        • ashagato says:

          thanks, wuyizidi, wise one. :)
(btw my autocorrect just had a field day with your name! which I’ve always read as why-you-dizzy until I actually had to type it out…)

          • wuyizidi says:

lol. I started using that name years ago on a forum about Chinese culture. Later on some people asked me to save my longer postings to a blog. The blogging site I chose was WordPress, same as this site. When I started posting here my name was already defaulted to that. Otherwise I would’ve chosen something easier to spell and more site appropriate, like Claws_Nomi.

    • fanciD says:

I was just thinking this too! so goofy but with such a serious face!

  19. Killer Klown says:

He needs to meet the Hungry Feroshus Bear.

  20. Gigi says:

Hey I collect owls, can I have this one for my collection?
Pleeeeeease with sugar on it and a cherry on top!

  21. Alice007 says:

Aww poor little doll! This is why I can’t play with the laser pointer with my cat… I feel so sad she doesn’t have anything to grab and rip up!

  22. Ha ha says:

Would it be safe to hug him?

  23. Lindsey says:

OMG that poor little thing!!! I agree, someone get it a mouse!!! And I totally agree with you jen!

  24. LOL Baby Owl = baby Kiotten with feathers.

    Hehehehehehe!!!!!

  25. Pickled Beatnik says:

The coolest part about this is that you consider that owls are just cats with wings. Predatory, carnivorous hunters who learn to hunt through play. So amazing!!

  26. Lorel J says:

Anyone who has ever done a zillion lunges on a step platform at the health club knows what this is all about.

  27. Lorel J says:

The take at :13 is hilarious.

  28. cellarmouse says:

he’s all “ok … waddya do wif me mousie? i knows yer hidin’ him someplace…”

  29. Flutterby says:

Still giggling at feroshus owlet attacking shadow mice, then turning to the camera as if to say WHATCHOO LOOKIN’ AT????

  30. BB/VA says:

I thought for a minute he was about to bonk his widdle head on the gate.

  31. Flutterby says:

Heh, heh…acts like he already bonked his haid on the gate!!!

  32. Mudbug says:

LOVE the look at the camera at the end ! So fierce ! So full of drama……..
(cue the drama music ) http://www.dramabutton.com/

    • Starfish says:

That was exactly what I thought of! Is there a “Dramatic Owl” yet? ‘cuz this guy would make a good candidate.

  33. ItsyBitsyTeenyWeenie says:

The owls are not what they seem.

  34. fleurdamour says:

It’s pretty clear to me that he’s tap dancing. Nice moves, Errol.

  35. BB/VA says:

I would love to see what he would do on an owl-size trampoline.

  36. dub1 says:

How many kicks does it take to get to the centre of a flat carpet mouse?
    One . . . two-whoo . . . three . . . four . . . 0:15 wtf . . . jillion!

  37. Angel says:

This is the owl equivalent of a cat chasing its tail (and not catching it!)

  38. Emmylee says:

For some reason, I feel like the commentary going through lil’ Owl’s head was a little like this every time he/she looked up:

Maybe I’m wrong…but gosh I feel like that’s just it!

  39. Melissa says:

LOVE the look @ :12. He’s all….”OMG YOU SEE IT TOO RIGHT?!?! RIGHT?!?!”

  40. He maybe confused about shadows, but he sure is fast at jumping on it the nanosecond it appears.

  41. Ozbirds says:

So adorable! I guess this is why owls hunt at night. :)

  42. victoreia says:

Thank you, I needed that. Especially with Mike’s commentary!

  43. kodalai says:

    *Sage Old Owl voice*

“What you must learn, young grasshopper, is that we are all in a cave, metaphorically, only playing with our own shadows on the walls. To learn your true self, you must first learn your own shadow. To catch the mouse, you must first catch its shadow. When you have caught the shadow of the mouse, come back to me and I will teach you the Way of the Owl.”

  44. Jiffknee says:

It finally just hit me! The Black Knight with his lunge and thrust (none of that, now) and “Have at you!”

*looks around for nods of agreement, but hears only crickets*

  45. Skip says:

I burst out loud laughing when he froze and looked right at the camera at 0:13!

  46. Kosagi says:

Amused myself by putting my cursor over the spot he was attacking, then flicking it away. Yes, I’m easily amused. Especially when I poked him and he looked up at me.

  47. It´s so cute! It plays just like a kitten, including the head tiltingz and getting easily distracted. All we need is a butt wiggle and we have a kitten with wings. :)

  48. Emmberrann says:

Bebeh owl is in school! He learnin’ to be Big Owl! Owls is predatorbird with big clawses on toes (better to grip mices wit’), and he practice on somethin’. If all them shadows was mice, he would have Big Owl Indigestion from eatin’em all. You go, Bebeh Owl, you practice them Big Owl moves!

  49. Ann B. says:

This is so cute! I am wondering where the owl is. There is a leg band on the right leg, as you are looking at the baby owl and it is in a hand made wooden cage. I would like to know a little more about this.

  50. monkeylover says:

  54. Autumn says:

I don’t like the description, He isn’t stupid…..He is just playing or trying to learn what to do. He is VERY cute though.

  55. I’ve been chasing shadows all my life
