I saw a documentary where a shy German woman devoted her life to working with sloths in the wild, almost never seeing another human. From this bebeh’s face, I can see why she did it. She wasn’t missing a thing, had all the love she could ever need.
I just attempted a basic search about this. The main references which came up readily, were for a sloth rescue hospital located in Costa Rica (but didn’t reference any specific female names) and also about a case in Texas (Houston area, Harris Co). That case DID reference a specific woman but didn’t give first/ last name. The article gave the idea that
eventually some people in her community felt that she might need some additional resources to help her admirable efforts to care for the sloths.
It’s been a long time since I saw that. It was actually a segment within a larger documentary, and I can’t remember what it was, sorry. I think it was on PBS in New York City when I lived there, probably around 2001-2004. I’ll repost if I get more info.
* thanks for givin’ it a try and letting me/ us know!
*And — re the article/ link you posted:
It would seem that the staff at the Institute for Systematic Zoology and Evolutionary Biology in Jena, didn’t “get the memo” about standard sloth behaviors !!!11!!!
Amazing orange eyelids! which I presume on a sloth would sound like kerrrrrpppluuuunkkkk instead of ‘plink’. Golden irises and jersey-shore amounts of eyeliner look good on him.

Oh great…now my day is going to be a total waste. Now I have to go through my cassette tapes and find this song and the rest of the best of the 80′s. Anyone know how to get a cassette tape loaded onto your IPOD???? The two won’t sync for me.
Hold me, hold me
Never let me go until you’ve told me, told me
What I want to know and then just hold me, hold me
Make me tell you I’m in love with you
Okay, where do I sign up to work with behbeh sloffs? Because I’m so there! I just love their little faces. It’s like you’re telling them about your day, and they’re really not listening to a word you say, but they’re smiling politely so you’ll think they are. Their expressions are very “Oh yeah? That’s cool. . .”
How do you feel about Mr. Astley, NOW??? ‘Cuz I’ve heard, that after I kicked him
to the curb (he’s just not thug-enough for me, y’know), he hasn’t been too busy …..
I could hook you up
P.S. I just watched a little bit of the video of him posted above. Reaction: What the %&*$&*# was I thinking, years ago? I thought he was so cute and so cool. Ouch.
“The look… of love… is in… your eyes… a look… your smile… can’t disguise….”
Thank you, Burt Bacharach, the Sloth of Love. (with apologies to Barry White)
For our honeymoon in Costa Rica, I dragged my husband clear across the country to the sloth rescue. They’re freaking adorable, and oh-so-snuggly with each other!

However, when I just searched “German Sloth Researcher,” I got this gem:

My friend and I have decided Mats is our new hero. He’s just not havin’ the system.
holy crap! that guy brings BEF to a whole new level!!
Hmm. Can I call matchinks between the beady eyes and the fur? Or does that not count because it’s the same dude?
He (she?) can serenade me anytime…..
Aw. Little velcro sloth…

Whoa. Sloths like 80s pop?
Sure they do. Remember the mega-hit by David Lee Sloth, “I’m just a little slow”?
(Yes. I. Am. Old. As. Dirt.)
*thunderous applause*
Yep.
NO!
YES!
AHHHHHH!
One thing about Mr. Astley – his voice seems to be bigger than he is.
Great. I have that as an earworm without even hitting “play”….. *scowls*
“there, there”, victoreia!!!
I scrolled down the second I read “Rick” – but it’s still got me!!

Here’s a diagram, maybe this’ll help??

Boy, music videos sure have improved since then! What’s with all the weird spinning?
Is this a spectacled sloth?
I think this is an Encore Presentayshe™ of this, but it’s slightly different processing (the eyes are definitely different.).
Nice catch, JME.
Gon – na hold your body close to mine . . .
From an earlier time:
Hold me, hold me
Never let me go until you’ve told me, told me
What I want to know and then just hold me, hold me
Make me tell you I’m in love with you
Music and lyrics by Harry Noble
This photo reminds me of Gershwin’s “Embraceable You…”
Yes Slothy Guy I did think i was gonna get Rick Rolled! (see roll over)
I so want to be hugged by a sloth!
Me too! Who knew sloths could be so affectionate?
i like the juxtaposition of the sloth eyes and the chimp-on-the-shirt’s eyes. they’re staring into each other’s souls.
Matchink!!!
*b-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-p*
Beeeeeeeady eyes!
All I want for Christmas is a sloth.
bu’ what about Your Two Front Teeth????
Signed,
It Had to be done.
That was very funny Fird , yes I remember that song too !!!

If I could hug a bebbeh sloth (and have it hug me back), my life would be complete. I don’t know what else to say but that face has keeled me ded.
It’s so sad on the iPad to miss the hover text. I wish there was a fix for that, but such a cute bebbeh
True confession: I had a HUGE crush on Rick Astley, back then.
skippymom?

Thanks, Fird, but I retired from romantic involvement with humans about a decade ago. I’m committed to only dating cats now.
P.S. I just watched a little bit of the video of him posted above. Reaction: What the %&*$&*# was I thinking, years ago? I thought he was so cute and so cool. Ouch.
1: now, he’s not exactly Steve Buscemi or Mickey Rourke …
2: we (?) were teeny-boppers (perish the thought!!!) at the time ….
um, Meg???
please to offer a audio sample of [sloth voice]???
oops — “an”
(changed my noun & forgot to adjust the article there, before hitting “send” *blush*)
Exactly. I would be happy to sing in a sloth voice if I only knew what a sloth voice sounds like.
I am guessing it is NOT much like Rick Astley.
How about, “I only have eyes for you….”.
I agree with that one Maribeth, most appropo.
“The look… of love… is in… your eyes… a look… your smile… can’t disguise….”

How is it that sloths aren’t household pets? they are so affectionate and adorable – and they don’t seem to need much exercise.
That’s it – adding it to my Christmas list!
Just remember what I said months ago about sloths- they do have those four inch claws and they go to the bathroom once every two weeks or more !!!
Even if they don’t know where the bathroom is doesn’t bother them , they’ll do it anywhere they have to !!!
This baby is a stupon-emitter, for sure. The golden eyes have me pinned and my brain is starting to dribble out my nose.
