I’ve Fallen and I Can’t Giddy Up

You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it skate on an ice rink.

  7. BB/VA says:

I knew you can’t roller skate in a buffalo herd – looks like you can’t ice skate in a horse herd either.

  8. zookeepertx says:

This is not cute. Horse’s bodies are not as flexible as cats’ or dogs’. I just hope this little guy isn’t injured! I has a sad for him :`(

    • kgj says:

my thoughts exactly. My horse had to be put down because she got on some ice and broke her hip. so sad

    • Copperbat says:

Luckily the lil chaps are much more flexible and their bones aren’t as brittle yet. This isn’t an unusual position on or off the ice for a foal. I’m sure he’s fine.

      • LG says:

Really, I’ve had horses for years and never had a foal in this position. It looks very unusal and uncomfortable to me.

  9. kimmaroo says:

Yeeeee-ouch!!!! I hate when that happens!

Love the title of this post!

*pets the pony* It’s okay, I can’t ice skate either.

  14. peg4x4 says:

Not cute-may have a broken pelvis.. any way to check on the babys condition?

  15. Bumble the Bunny says:

I did that 2 years ago. it took 2 metal plates ,12 screws and 4 hours of surgery and another operation a year later to sort out the dip in my arm. hope the little foalie got off better :( although it is cute the one horse is looking at him, obviously wandering if he should help, then thinking better of it :D

  16. Jana says:

i need to know what happened to bebe :(

  17. 260Oakley says:

  20. Neo says:

This is not cute. This is horrifying.

  21. woolfie says:

Poor baby! Probably never saw ice before. And never wants to see it again!!

  22. kzgz says:

    Cute or sad?

  23. Angus's Mom says:

Definitely ‘cute or sad’…it’s nature and it happens. Poor little pony.

  24. Katrina says:

    Limp along little doagie…

  25. Jean says:

Hopefully the photographer helped bubby up … I guess the adult horses instinctively know that the ice would break under their weight if they try to help. Poor baby.

  26. flutterby says:

Hopefully the photographer had a rope and was able to move the foal to where it could regain its footing from an otherwise nearly impossible position for an equine to recover from…

  27. CariceLaur says:

A foal that young can still have additional flexibility in it’s joints. I’ve seen foals do this while learning how to run or play, and typically they’re fine, though a bit sore and embarrassed. I’m sure the person taking the photo helped the little one up.

  28. E. says:

This takes the cake for the ‘sad category’ because it looks like the horse has actually really hurt itself, not hypothetically. It makes me sick to see animals hurting :(

    • Sharpy says:

it seems as if the picture wouldn’t have been taken if the situation had been dire. it would be nice to know, right?

  29. fanciD says:

Oh this picture just killed me! So pathetically cute… (and yeah, worrisome too.)

  30. Skip says:

Ah, poor guy! I’m sure the photographer helped out. I like the pinto mare on the right – she has the classic “Should I help or would that just embarrass him and should I instead pretend I didn’t see anything?” look on her face.

    • susan ladmer says:

I think the pinto mare is most likely mom and that she is hoping the photographer will help her baby and not eat it.

Winter wrap up is hard, but I’m sure she’ll be super great at something that keeps her hooves on the ground.
