The Streamlined World of… the Future!

Here at the Cute Overload Observation and Testing (COOT) facility, we’re building the pup of tomorrow today. Our high-speed wind tunnel subjects snouts to extreme air pressure, resulting in dogs that are sleeker, faster… or in this case, just goofier.

Alexandra R. says: “This is my dog, Emma. We live in Boston, Massachusetts and hadn’t left town in about six months. She normally hates the car; I can’t even run to the store with her so driving up to Maine is never fun (four hours). I think that she craved the fresh air so much because her jowls were flapping in the wind the entire time. I was lucky enough to get this snap of the happiest dog on the planet.”

The dogs face is all ‘Make it stooooppppp!’ :D

  2. jj says:

Blow in their face and they cower; open a window and its ‘the happiest dog on the planet!’

  3. ashagato says:

    she’s a beauty! ;)

  4. Those whiskers look so severe. It doesn’t help that I watched Bride of Frankenstein this week.

  5. Gigi says:

Your vet must be very happy with you, this dog has very clean teeth

    • Berg says:

I was thinking that, too, Gigi!

One of our cats needs to go to the vet to have his teeth cleaned, and I’m trying desperately to get him down to the proper weight before bringing him in. It’s tough having one cat who needs to beef up and another who needs to slim down…

Any suggestions, peeps? Maybe I just need to be mean and not feed Mr. Chunky every time I feed Mr. Skinny, but I have a really hard time ignoring that sad little face.

I digress… Emma is a beautiful girl, and I love the wind-blown jowls! I’m glad that she was able to enjoy her time in the car.

      • AuntieBellum says:

Could you separate them at feeding time? Put Mr. Chunky in another room while you feet Mr. Skinny?

      • Beth covered in cat hair says:

Berg, I had a chunky cat too and she had to lose minimum four pounds before hernia surgery. To this day I have to feed her in a separate room or she’ll eat everything. It’s a hassle, but she did lose the weight and has kept it off.
I wonder if you can feed Mr. Skinny some kitten chow for extra calories and add some canned food maybe.

        • Berg says:

Thanks for the thoughts, Beth and AuntieBellum. I’ll trying putting Boo (a.k.a., Mr. Chunky) in another room for a week or so while Henry gets to chow down. Boo’s gums are red in several spots, and I don’t want to postpone the teeth cleaning for too much longer.

Unfortunately Henry has food allergies, so I’m reluctant to try him on kitten chow or off the shelf wet food. He’s been eating only boiled chicken breast for about a month now–the vet told me to mix white rice in with it, but neither Boo nor Henry ever ate a single grain of it. Henry’s three or four times a day diarrhea and/or vomiting sessions have finally come to an end. I’m really enjoying not cleaning poo and puke off the floor!

Henry has put some weight back on since his digestive tract is happier, so now I can focus on slimming down Boo down. Separating them for meals does make the most sense. Thanks for the support!

I have a skinny(Kirby) and a fatty (Gus). Kirby can’t anything but fowl, fish and rabbit. He also likes rice and yogurt. Anything else comes right back up. Gus can and does eat everything. They’re on a raw diet now. It wasn’t easy. During the transition I used ‘bribe’ ingredients like shredded Parmesan cheese, tuna juice, nutritional yeast powder. Whenever my big guy made me guilty about his food, I tried spending a extra time playing with him instead… I hope things get better for your kitties!

          • debg says:

I’ve got one fatty and five normal-weights, so I put their food up high where Ms. Chubs can’t reach it. She eats at specific times in a separate room, whereas the others can graze at will. It’s working, if slowly.

            Good wishes to your anipals.

      • Annie Stuart says:

i actually saw a really clever trick on the “ikea hackers” website a year or so ago which involved a similar situation. Somebody took a cabinet / box and cut a hole in the door that was big enough for their skinny kitties to slip through, but fatty-cat couldn’t fit. Regular cat-dinner went inside the box for skinny cats to eat, and carefully portioned diet cat food stayed outside for fat cat’s dinner.

        • Berg says:

That is clever! I hope it won’t come to that for me, but I’ll file that away as a possibility.

        • debg says:

Heh. I tried that with one of my kittens, but the adults were too smart for me: they’d just reach a paw inside and grab some kitten chow.

I’ve imagined a feeder “cage” programmed to a cat’s microchip, so only the right cat could get in. Of course, I’d then have to microchip all 6 cats.

          • ceejoe says:

I just want to say, bless your hearts, all of you, for loving your kittehs so much!

          • ashagato says:

oh god, so we’re not the only ones dealing with this?! ms. fatty is so smart she pretends she can’t jump up to wherever is oscar’s new food hiding spot until one day I catch her up there scarfing down his food as fast as she can….we’re running out of ideas…

          • fanciD says:

me too! a fatty and a skinny!
(oh and whiskers. I mean, on me, not the cats. well, also on the cats, but… you know what i mean.)

    • yolanda says:

That was my thought. Amazing clean teeth. This dog must eat raw meat regularily.

  6. (The Original) Mel says:

Ahhh Maine in autumn. I’ve totally made that trip with my Dobie doing the same cheek inflations. I miss living in New England.

  7. Vera says:

My GSH Pointer Chelsy passed away three weeks ago. She loved the car, but even more she loved the water. She looked identical to your very happy Emma and your photo evokes wonderful memories of my girl.

    • kimmaroo says:

My heart goes out to you, Vera. You gave her what every dog deserves….a happy life with a loving, caring human.

    • debg says:

So, so sorry, Vera. Hugs to you, and I’ll raise a glass in Chelsy’s memory.

    • Ruffian9 says:

      Hi Vera

As kimmaroo & debg have already said, hugs and wishing lots of good memories to you. My GSP Emma is 13 and a half, still doing fairly well, but I’m dreading the time when decisions will have to be made. For now, I spoil her to bits. She’s pretty stressed in the car, so I don’t do that. She sleeps wherever she wants, even if that means my side of the bed, gets tons of treats (she’s really thin), and ear scritches galore. When the time comes, I’ll be relying on good memories to keep me going.

This is what happens if you open your mouth when you skydive. I say that from experience. :D

  11. Austin Powers says:

Mole. Bloody mole. We aren’t supposed to talk about the bloody mole, but there’s a bloody mole winking me in the face. I want to c-u-u-t it off, ch-o-o-p it off, and make guacamole.

  12. katie says:

I did that while riding down the road today. Funny. No one thought it was so cute. ;)

  13. Vinnycenza says:

Love the GSP’s. Mine loves to ride in the car but won’t sit still long enough to get a picture.

  14. Thistle says:

Oh man, that whisker with the motion blur going on–awesome! XD

  15. julie b says:

Is that called an air pocket?

  16. Lerrinus says:

Aww, reminds me of our GSP Candi! RIP sweet girl!

  17. Roketto says:

That pooch needs Doggles! Her whole face is happy, but her eyes are scrunched closed against the wind.

…I need to post my picture of Hazel sporting her Doggles with her flues going flappity-flappity-flap out the car window.
