Ask The Pet Genius

Jure T. writes us to say: “This is my new puppy (female) called Tara. I’m not really sure what kinda information do you need to make a post on the site but the most important part is that she prefers swimming in her water bowl instead drinking from it.”

Dear Jure: There’s a perfectly rational explanation why she doesn’t want to drink from the bowl. It tastes just like a dog’s been swimming in it.

NOMTOM, you make me so happy. And this pupster is gorgeous!

    So shiny and new!

  3. SB says:

    That’s a big sa-weeety right there!

  4. It may be that her feet are hot – what is the weather like where you are, on the other hand could she perhaps have a sore foot – she may possibly – and is cooling her paw – go figure – dogs are not like us – what they do they have a reason for…..

    • Niki says:

Or… the simplest answer… she’s a lab. Any lab puppy that likes water that I’ve encountered loves splashing in her water bowl. Some grow out of it (mine did, but she gets her fill by attacking the water in her kiddie pool), but it stems from that innate love/obsession with water.

Their reasons aren’t always dramatic… sometimes they’re merely playful.

Just spent a week with a 5 month lab pup, and i can attest to the water playing. And the barrelling/sliding on the wood floor. And the chewing. Ande the…

    Obvious answer is obvious

  6. skippymom says:

I’m thinking that, actually, most dogs probably wouldn’t mind drinking water that tastes like dog.

  7. jabourque says:

buy her a mini-pool and she will drink out of that. And she is a cutie!

  8. ceejoe says:

BEEP! on da cute widdle nose!

  9. jj says:

because if she sticks her foot in the water dish, she will receive many treats and accolades ‘what a cute little puppy’. She’s just working the room! ;)

Pet Genius is strangely reminiscent of The Mighty Shphinx:

That comic reminds me of a flight I took in June. I had a stop over in Atlanta, and my connecting flight was delayed “due to the weather outside” (thunderstorms). I could only wonder where else the weather would be…

This is an adorable pupster, and I do believe that we need many more pictures of her.

    • Kar says:

      Aw man, I love Mutts.

      snerk!

Big feetsies. She’s going to grow up to be a BIG GIRL!

What a cutiepie! One of our dogs, when she was a pup, LOVED to splish splash all the water out of the bowl. We have a bistro feeder so when I discovered this little habit of hers she’d splashed 5 gallons of water out into our laundry room. When I yelled at her she ran, soaking wet, into my husband’s lap so he could save her from mean mommy. She is lucky she’s cute. The water bistro lived outside for a long time after that – she seems to have outgrown it.

My daughter had a boy kitten who loved to tip over his water dish. Naturally, she bought a heavier, la;rger one that he couldn’t tip over–so he would stick both of his (“hands” (her word, not mine) into the dish and scoop the water out as fast as he could.

Also, when she tried using a squirt bottle of water to spray him when he got on the kitchen counter, thinking that would train him not to do so, he decided he just LOVED the personal shower. Sometimes he would get up on the counter and then call her to let her know he was there, because he wanted his shower.

I have a foster rabbit who seems to like to stand with her feet or one ear in her water dish. No idea why

      • victoreia says:

*Snicker* Just shows to go that cats are wonderfully weird!

      • doomchild says:

Lol, thanks for cheering up my cloudy, grey morning :D

      • kimmaroo says:

My male (adult) cat does the same thing with his water dish. I’ve learned not to put much water in it because he scoops out any water he doesn’t drink and it just ends up all over the wall and floor.

        • Blue Footed Booby says:

My lab does this with his face, but I’m pretty sure it’s not intentional. Rather than lap water like a normal dog, he basically sticks his face in and sucks like a vacuum.

          • Blue Footed Booby says:

That same lab in my previous post likes to follow his nose. He sniffs and sniffs, up one side of an object and down the other. When the other dog smells something interesting he sniffs briefly, then turns and pees on it. This frequently results in the lab getting peed on (he doesn’t seem to mind).

The spigot in my bathroom’s bathtub drips, and I’ve been putting off fixing it. My roommate’s cat sits under it and lets it drip on her face. She’ll walk up to me and I’ll pet her, and she’ll be all wet. Thanks to my lab, this always makes me really want to wash my hands.

  13. tracylee says:

    hahaa
the dogs at the city dog park will put their whole front ends in the buckets of water :)
    what a lovely girl!

  14. AuntieBellum says:

It tastes just like a dog’s been swimming in it.

    Yeah, that’s why I don’t drink Starbucks.

  15. Mina says:

I had a kitty who liked to play in her water bowl like that, then drink from the bathtub.

    • skippymom says:

So, did you keep water in the tub at all times for her convenience?

      • Mina says:

The faucet leaked and the landlord never would come fix it, so she pretty much got the frest water when ever she wanted it.

    • Saffron says:

Same here. One of my kittehs uses the water dish as his finger bowl. Then he drinks from it. ew
      Cats!

    • ash says:

That’s mine! Nearly every time I go in the bathroom my kitteh will LEAP into the bathtub and stare at me to turn a drip on for him. Of course I do it like a good trained Hooman.

      • DillPig says:

Mine used to jump up on the bathroom vanity and call to me until I came and filled the basin up with fresh water, so she could drink from it. She preferred it still bubbling from the tap…

  16. BB/VA says:

She looks a little large to be swimming in the bowl, unless she has the power to shrink herself…

  17. julie b says:

At least she doesn’t need water wings.

  18. mooseb says:

Our black lab would ALWAYS play with the water in his bowl. Outside. Inside. Didn’t matter. Bowls with water needed to be tipped over and carried all through the house. But bring out the baby pool? (We used it to give him a bath in nice weather.) He’d hide behind the cedar hedge where we couldn’t reach him. And they’re supposed to be water dogs.

  19. dawnkeyotie says:

You always gotta test the temperature before you give it to a baby! Duh!

  20. Katie says:

Looks like she’s part lab, which means she’s into water in all its forms. Love the puppy eyes!

  21. T.U.M. says:

Reminds me of the kitten we once adopted from the local feral colony. On the porch, we kept one of those water dishes that’s very slightly heated so it won’t freeze over in winter. Kitten decided it was warmer in the dish and kept climbing in.

We decided he wasn’t smart enough to make it in the wild. We named him “Bob.”

    • Shari says:

Bob the Cat? I love it! How wonderful is it that he found your porch!

      • luvstehQte says:

that’s funny, my dad also has a feral porch cat named Bob. actually, though, his is BOB, which stands for “big old boy.”

    “Waterdishes: Unclear on the Concept”

  24. hilz says:

What a cutie!! And this kinda reminds me of my cat’s new way of drinking water, recently developed. She’s taken to drinking from the far side of the bowl, and she’s super fluffy. Therefore I always know when she’s had a drink because her chest is SOAKED. Animals + water = weird.

  25. Rick says:

Only Palmolive softens your paws while you wash!

    • Sharpy says:

are you saying i’m soaking in it?!

and pssssttt…. if anyone needs a good kitty or puppy name, you could do worse than “madge!”

  26. Carrie says:

My Corgi does that too after a session of fetch; places her ball and paw in the bowl and makes a mess!

  27. Scooterb62 says:

Excuse me waiter, there’s a paw in my soup.

  28. Silly dee dee dee! Tara just needs a moment to catch her breath. It’s an awfully hot day. And Clark just doesn’t give a damn!

  29. Carollynn says:

my puppy prefers to blow bubbles in her water rather than drink from it

  30. ^oo^ says:

    It’s the paws that refreshes..

  31. Alice Shortcake says:

She’s softening her cuticles before her pedicure.

  32. Jude says:

Weird right paw. Looks like it’s broken several times..

  33. she’s just doing what Madge did in all those Palmolive commercials back in the ’70′s :D

  34. SoccerSue says:

One of our kittehs reaches out a tentative paw and briefly touches the water in her dish before settling in to drink. I filed it under “cats are weird” until the vet told us she’s developing cataracts. Now I figure she’s making sure she knows where the surface of the water is so she doesn’t dunk her whole face in.

  35. Kim says:

I can’t believe no one has commented upon her gorgeous big puppeh paws, soulful eyes or what is obviously a precious Buddha Belly!

    • kimmaroo says:

I think you just did! I just wanna slobbersmooch the top of her delicious chocolatey haid…..

  36. Hunter's mum says:

My cat does the same thing. He’d rather drink in the toilet or tub.

  37. kat says:

haha i like the “I’m not really sure what kinda information do you need to make a post on the site but the most important part is that she prefers swimming in her water bowl instead drinking from it.” :D

  38. Maribeth says:

My dog Sugar (German Shepherd + Australian Cattle Dog) jumps in the water trough at the dog park. She can get one side of her whole body in there but has to wiggle and wiggle to get flipped around and evenly wet. It’s hilarious to watch. I love it because she shouldn’t be so hydrophilic with her heritage – go figure!

  39. Is she a water spaniel?

  40. L says:

My kitty Tiberia also enjoys a delightful sploosh in the water bowl. She sticks both her front paws in and splashes all the water out.

  41. Sarah says:

I hope that water’s not warm! (if childhood sleepovers taught me nothing else)
