Not Such a Hot Idea

Based on this video, Gus seems like a real “have it all” dog, the kind who doesn’t like being forced into arbitrary choices — such as between the cool kiddie pool and the air conditioned house. Let us know how that works out for ya, Gus.

Comments

  1. Mamabear says:

OK, that’s a really smart dog!

“Jeez Gus, we can’t have anything nice, can we?” Priceless.

  2. shannomo says:

Why is my very LARGE water bowl outside? Let me take it in! The other bully didn’t help, LOL he/she just kept drinking.

  3. earlybird1 says:

Ha ha! This is classic, “MINE! You no haz!”

  4. Gus is merely anticipating the new trend in real estate — soon EVERY home will have an indoor lap pool! Be the first on your block!

  5. I can’t believe he made it!

But, why didn’t the owner just go over and stop him instead of saying “no!” repeatedly. Either let him do his thing or don’t tell him “no”? Just curious.

  6. What a clever dog. My Maggie would probably run away from the pool and cower behind my knees :)

  7. LOL, that’s excellent! Gus is smart! :)

Poor other doggie is confused, though…..

  8. 2ScoopsRice says:

These are some hot doggies! They need to cool off, and that’s no bull, dawg,,,

  9. 2ScoopsRice says:

I also think Gus is protesting it being referred to a “kitty” pool…amirite?

  10. January says:

Gus has a mind of his own and is quite the little problem solver!

  11. Copperbat says:

His determined bully expression convinced me halfway into the video that he was gonna get that pool in the house. Go, Gus!

  12. I agree, he’s a real out of the boxer thinker. I would hire him for the office in a hot minute. To, ummm, generate new ideas around the water cooler. That sounds rational, right?

  13. Well done, Gus. I am very impressed.

  14. I knew she was doomed as soon as she said, “You’re not taking it in the house.”

(I knew this because I know every time I’ve told any pet I’ve ever had, “You’re not going to [do whatever it is you're thinking about doing]” they have gone and done precisely that.)

  15. Extreme Makeover Doggy Edition??

  16. “Gus, stop pulling the pool into the house.”
“Can’t hear you, I’m busy pulling the pool into the house.”

  17. Do you think anipals know from the laughter in our voices that we don’t really mean the “NO!” commands?

  18. Rachael says:

Oh. My. Gah! How freaking funny is that!!!

  19. ‘Cunning plan’! Blackadder reference?

  20. I should NOT have let my dogs see that… they are already eying their pool with growing interest…

  21. (The Original) Mel says:

I can hear Gus saying, “Ehn, eeehhhnnn, ehn, ehn.”

  22. I think that dog was a cat in a former life. They always get their way. BTW, I wonder which room he put it in and if he had it match the furniture and accommodate the traffic flow pattern.

  23. luvstehQte says:

hilarious!!! i actually laughed out loud the first time i watched this (and all of the subsequent times!). mad problem solving skills on that one! *is secretly glad that my own dog is a bit more blissfully ignorant*

  24. Jim March says:

This is bordering on tool use. Seriously.

  25. 260Oakley says:

Yeah, you don’t want them to start pooling their resources…

  26. or resourcing their pools.

  27. 8O >blink blink< WOW.

  28. I don’t blame Gus one bit ! I prefer an indoor pool myself being a red head & used to nasty sunburns from swimming outdoors.
I’m just grateful we saw if he actually got the pool into the house. I was afraid the video would stop before we saw the end of the cliff hanger !

  29. seriously !

  30. leaves of cat grass says:

hahaha this is the funniest thing i’ve seen all summer!!! applause to the camera-woman to keep filming, and restraining herself from intervening. Despite the potential flooding of her lovely home, you can’t buy moments like this…

  31. I love that so much. :D

  32. What else?

  33. Best!! :)

  34. This gave me the biggest belly laugh I’ve had in a long time, hahaha!!

  35. I love Gus! What a clever and determined little guy. I wish we could have a sneak peek into the inner conversation that Gus was having with himself while he was doing this. Such a great video.

  36. That’s what cracked me up, too! Either she didn’t think he could really do it, or there’s Pergo inside and she just wanted to see what would happen.

  37. Linda H. says:

    Never say never.

  38. the idea was awesome! it was just the execution that failed…

  39. Alice Shortcake says:

Time for Plan B, Gus. Although it was your owner’s fault for not opening the doors a bit wider!

  40. My mom saw this and said “Wow, he’s persistent!” I said, “What is he, Mom? and she said, “He’s a dog.” I said “What kind of dog?” and she said “Oh yeah.”

  41. THAT. WAS. A-W-E-S-O-M-E !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. Stressfactor says:

    Dear Gus,

Yes, you got the pool inside.

Unfortunately you left the water *outside*.

  43. Copperbat says:

    I’m 100% certain of it.

  44. Bathrub. =D

  45. kimmaroo says:

    That’s exactly what he’s saying. It’s a direct quote.

  46. wildviolette says:

Oh Gus! I am madly in love with you and your crafty problem solving skills!

  47. kimmaroo says:

    SNORTLAFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  48. kimmaroo says:

Wait ’til Gus finds The Lawn Sprinkler.

    Be afraid. Be very afraid.

  49. Well, the camera is a clue too.

  50. Turning the pool sideways was totally genius, even if the water did spill out. I have no doubt that Gus has a way to refill the pool once he gets it inside.

  51. Catsquatch says:

    ROFLMBO!!!!!!!!!

    omg….

Gus is a high class dog, he simply wants his spa to be indoors, and if his hoomans wont do it for him, hes gonna fix it up hisself.

  52. because the lady is a cuteologist, duh!

  53. Third Shift says:

Somebody hook that puppy up with a pull-out faucet, stat, now that he’s gotten the pool in the house.

I’m jealous. I bought my greyhound puppy a kiddie pool and this idiot does not know how to play with it. All entreaties for him to get in the pool is met with this vacant stare like, “you talking to me, what?” look.

  54. Gus’s head cloud:

“What is this word “no” she keeps repeating?”

    Silly hoomanz!

  55. draeger says:

and no one wants to run their house like some sort of poolice state.

  56. I don’t think she thought he could actually get it in. Part of what is so funny is her final “Oh my go…” and it cuts off. I wouldn’t have thought funny Gus would have succeeded. What a funny dog!

  57. That was the funniest video I’ve seen in a long time! I have been watching it over and over throughout the day and laughing until I cry each time. Gus is a funny little problem-solver. Love him!

  58. “You keep on using that word. I don’t think it means what you think it means.”

  59. wannadance says:

so am i…i mean, that dawg had it figured out. the rocking of the pool to slosh the water, ya know,l that’s physics. then dumping it all out at once when the rocking reached an endpoint. and then folding the pool so it fit through the door.

i know a lot of humans who aren’t that smart. a whole lot, in fact…

  60. wannadance says:

i agree. very organized, sequence of actions: no tries and then backing off then trying again.
this dawg just had a straight shot…

  61. wannadance says:

failed? FAILED? no. it was a total success. gus could build a space ship with only two paws and his teeth. it is tool usingl

i want him to come over to my apt, clean up and rearrange the furniture…

  62. wannadance says:

ts, elucidate please…i am drawing mulltiple blanks….

  63. wannadance says:

but but: he went to great trouble to dump the water. that was part of the plan, docha see?there’s lots of water indoors and in the dawgs, just one pool…

dern, what a smart dog. i have never had a dog, only cats. that dog is nearly as smart as a cat…
    runs and ducks…

  64. I am totally in love with this video!!!

  65. Mary (the first) says:

It would be tool use if he needed a tool, but he didn’t. Figured it all out! “We don’t need no stinkin’ tools!” Made me LOL.

  66. Mary (the first) says:

Oh yeah. He’s gonna stand there looking at the laughing lady and say, “Put down the camera and fill the pool! Didn’t you see I had to dump the water to get it in here? Help me out, here!”

  67. just goes to show there’s no stoppin’ a very determined bull dog!

  68. ROTFL!!!!!

  69. Augustina says:

    Inconceivable!

  70. Nanette says:

    Bull(headed)dog.

  71. Lipstick6 says:

    Oh, Gus!

  72. Dog is all: “Let’s make this happen, b*tches!”

  73. Dammit, now I want a peanut.
    BRB.

  74. arachnophile says:

The fact that she said it with a giggle just sealed the deal. I mean, she could have enforced the whole, “no,” thing but… who wouldn’t want to see how this was going to turn out. ;)

Not good for dog obedience but good for cutologists everywhere. :)

  75. arachnophile says:

And bully breads are known for being just that. ;)

  76. victoreia says:

Just watch out for the eel-infested waters!

  77. ROFL! good job guss!

  78. Um…”Have fun storming the castle!”

S’all I got. You guys beat bested me! Lol!

  79. I guess this is a candidate for the Animals Being Dicks website….http://animalsbeingdicks.com/

  80. She is way lucky that dog doesn’t have thumbs.

  81. Woofy'sMa says:

    tks, Zara – funny! LMAO

  82. kibblenibble says:

Anybody else cheer and clap when Gus succeeded in getting the pool inside? :-)

  83. Woofy'sMa says:

You can practically see the cogs in the heads moving. This guy figures it out – he leaves room to get by the pool, positions himself in the doorway, dumps out more water, finally realizes he can lift it sideways – it’s downright scary. Is that a man in a dogsuit?

  84. Woofy'sMa says:

Love it, kimmeroo. Yeah, film him with the sprinkler!

  85. Woofy'sMa says:

I laughed and howled through the whole thing. Of course I cheered for Gus.

  86. That’s what I was thinking, too!

“Hey it’s an extra large water bowl! I know! It’ll go perfectly next to my food dish inside the house!”

  87. I did. :D I was really happy to see him finally succeed. Just goes to show that persistence does indeed pay off.

  88. 6Rabbits says:

    *snerk*

  89. Gus, would you please put my new bike together for me…….I can’t figure it out.

  90. I would have stopped shooting the video about 40 seconds sooner.

  91. pendrake says:

Gus: “Okay, got it inside. Onwards to the sink to refill it!”

  92. OMG What a GREAT site thanks Simi

  93. I actually made “touchdown ” arms !!!

  94. I can’t remember the last time I have laughed at any video as much as I did this one. What a dog ol’ Gus is!!!!

  95. that is one determined pooch! lol..very cute!

  96. She had our viewing pleasure in mind!

  97. Yes! Me too! :-D

  98. Gus, you just made me fall off my chair LOLing. ;)

  99. graciesbakes says:

I love that you can hear his feet sliding on the floor as he tries to pull it in through the door. Too cute!

  100. camelot says:

Now THAT is a bull(headed)dog. He knew what he wanted and was NOT going to be deterred. I LOVE bulldogs (‘specially Frenchies.) and I LOVE CO!!!! I look at it every day to keep my head on straight (cuz I live in Saudi Arabia).

  101. “Oops, there goes another rubber tree plant.”

  102. Third Shift says:

My comment has been in moderation for a day. What?

  103. what?

    [shifty eyes]

  104. camelot says:

Gus takes a little measurement by eye at 1:24. He realizes he is going to have to turn that sucker sideways if he is going to get it inside. Yup, little more water out and…one last effort: IN!

  105. Woofy! I named my first stuffed animal – a sort of cocker spaniel – Woofy! I love that name :-)

  106. He’s hearing “GO GUS GO!” That’s what I was saying, anyway

  107. Thanks for that link – after 2 Gus videos in a row I had to subscribe to the Gus channel!

  108. Ya know I was expecting Gus to nudge the door open just a bit more, lol.

  109. JenDeyan says:

Super puppeh win! I was cheering Gus on the whole time.

  110. Theresa says:

WOW. Serious romping, frolicking, snorting, splashing, grinning bulldog bliss! What an energetic bulldog!

  111. Krista T says:

All your comments are making me laugh as much as the video! Have to facebook this one XD

  112. He doesn’t need … thumbs!

  113. He’s so happy and he wants the human to share all the waters!

  114. Noelegy says:

    Hi-igh hopes, he’s got hi-igh hopes…

  115. Noelegy says:

    The most quotable movie evah?

  116. Noelegy says:

I gotta tell you a little bulldog story heah.

My nephew has a son who was born 3 months prematurely (the mom was in a car accident and the airbag went off, causing her to go into contractions). The little guy weighed 3 lbs. at birth and was not expected to make it. He spent the first 104 days of his life in the hospital and has had 14 surgeries.

My nephew’s minister told him that the reason that bulldogs have such ugly faces (I know, I know, I don’t think they’re ugly either) is so they can bite something and hold on. He was making a point about persistence and not giving in. Now I have to wonder if he has seen this video!

By the way, that little boy is now a happy, healthy, nearly-4-year-old.

  117. Noelegy says:

    Who loves dogs.

  118. This made my day!!!

  119. That’s a different (though also precious) Gus. The lady who owns THIS Gus posted a comment in response to someone on the Gus vs. Pool video explaining that the two Guses look similar, but that isn’t her dog. Notice that the owner of THIS Gus is Kristan, while the other video has evmoss as the person taping the pup. ALso, THIS Gus has a sister named Ginger, but the other one has a sister named Lucy.

There are some other videos of THIS Gus, though.

  120. This is a video of what happened after Gus took the pool inside. (It’s called “The Aftermath of the Pool.”) Gus and Ginger play with the empty pool and beat it up pretty thoroughly. Very cute.

  121. This is Gus letting Mommy know it’s time to feed him!

  122. ramona austerman says:

Gus is not afraid to pursue his wants and needs!!!

  123. Ruffian9 says:

This made my day. Thanks, Gus.

  124. Dogs (fur kids) intelligence is only limited by what WE think they can accomplish! Go Gus!

  125. There’s nothing cute about a dog being destructive. It’s clear who’s in charge here. Since Gus doesn’t take “no” seriously (and neither does the owner), when he attacks some child, don’t be surprised that she can’t stop him. How wasteful and idiotic to praise a dog for destroying something that costs money just for a video. Instead of filming, put the camera down and teach the dog what “no” means. Duh.

  126. Hilarious! This dog’s a keeper for lesser human tasks.

  127. *DING DING DING DING DING!!!*

And we have a winner! It’s Friday’s Frumpy Francis Frump of The Week!

    Franks for playing!

  128. dog spoiler says:

hey …. no bull….. shouldn’t you drowning little kittens in the river somewhere or making ginger bread men for unsuspecting and evil children?

  129. ha!

  130. It looks more like Gus letting Mommy know he wants to sign up with Arsenal. :P

  131. He wanted an indoor not an outdoor pool, for when its bad weather outside he can have a good time inside!!
