I was going to ask whether they are actually eyes? Or are they markings on the underside of its head so that its predators don’t try to sneak up on it from underneath?
Nope, they’re really eyes! Compound eyes have terrible resolving power ’cause the lenses are so small. To make up for that, flying predators like dragonflies and damselflies have to have eyes that are really enormous relative to their heads.
The really neat thing is that, because damselflies’ eyes wrap around nearly 360 degrees, you basically can’t sneak up on them from any direction. They seeeeeee youuuuuuuuuu (singsong voice).
