  4. Guinea Peeg Lover says:

Really? I live in Omaha too!

  5. Imagine if sloths took gym class.

    teacher:
“Ok, once around the track. I’ll be back in a month to see who reaches the finish line first!”

  6. That is freakin’ hilarious. Wonder what that sloth thought? One second it’s millimetering across the road, the next instant it’s at Warp 5. Notice how carefully the man picked it up. He must have heard about those razor-sharp clawsies. Let’s hear it for the humanitarian hoomans!

  7. Moderation? Huh? Moi? But, but, I’m just a vanilla personality!

  8. Umm. What do you call it when something is equally creepy and sweet? There has to be a word…

    Oh! Sloth.

  9. There’s just something about sloths that absolutely KILL me! Why are they so hilarious?

  10. (The Original) Mel says:

That was the FloJo of sloths. He won state champs in the across-road dash in sloth school.

  11. Kross10c says:

    It’s a Plane!!

  14. Martha in Washington says:

I believe this deserves a ResQute tag! And we also have another entry for the Men of CO calendar!

  15. Thank goodness someone came along and saved this little curie pie.

  16. Too funny!! I’m glad the kind humans were there to help this poor fella – and document it!

  17. Yes and YES! He was so gentle and brave. I mean, have you seen those claws??? :::swoon:::

  18. I TOTALLY KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN! :) There should be a Rule of Cuteness that has to do with toes.

We already have one for eye capsules. ;)

  19. My mother used to pull the car over to help turtles cross roads safely… I never once imagined humans transporting sloths across roads. Yay indeed for humanitarian hoomans!

  20. (The Original) Mel says:

He had good legs too. I’m jus sayin’.

  21. Hovertext wins the internet today!

  22. According to BBC’s “Life of Mammals” (with David Attenborough, natch), the three-toed sloth has a reaction time about one-fourth as fast as a human’s. So that calm walk across the road was probably the sloth version of zip-lining. I’m sure his little slothy heart was beating slightly faster than usual for days after that crossing.

  23. Ha ! I told my hubby the peeps on C.O. wouldn’t leave me hanging & finish it off !!!

  24. poor thing

  25. That just made my day. I’m logging off now. :)

  26. Sloths are natural in the rainforest of my birthplace, the Republic of Panama. I absolutely love the sloths, but it is very hard seeing them on the ground because they have no ability to move any faster, or to get up on their legs to walk, or to move in any other manner or any faster on the few occasions when they leave the trees and unfortunately many, many of them are in fact, killed by vehicles as they try to get across a road to climb a tree. That is why there are so many online videos of orphaned baby sloths being taken care of by conservation groups.

The extreme supine crawling position of the one you see in this video is not because it is just relaxed or or not in a hurry – that is the only speed and the only way it can move on terra firma. And, those long claws make it very dangerous for anyone to pick one up, because even though they are not naturally aggressive toward humans, people can be seriously hurt even by just accidental contact if one is startled or picked up the wrong way.

The very best thing about sloths in Panama is that you can see them, along with capybaras, crocodiles, loud howler monkeys, hundreds of amazing birds flying right overhead, etc, etc, and maybe even a jaguar, all in their natural environment just about any time you want to. Best place to stay is the beautiful eco-friendly Gamboa Rainforest Resort right smack in the middle of the protected jungle. A luxury suite for you at night with several very nice restaurants & huge pool, while during the day you are surrounded by the natural rainforest. Take a guided trip in a real dugout canoe to a native village for lunch & handmade souveniers for the day, and don’t miss the small power boat ride speeding between the freighters & cruise ships transiting the canal, then on to Monkey Island where you can feed the capuchin monkeys banana by hand!!!!!

Disclosure: I have absolutely nothing personal to do with Gamboa Resort, but it is my favorite place to spend about 3 days every time I am in Panama. I never get tired of that place, and I think a lot of you might love it too. (and when I say it is in the middle of the jungle – I mean there is NOTHING else close by, so don’t expect a lot of shopping or other touristy things for the couple of days you might stay there. The 200 acre resort is DEEP in the jungle!) Free airport or city pickup & return too!

Ok, ok, I know I get wound up. I’m done now.

  27. The sloth probably though “WTF” indeed! ;)

  29. The bunch of gawpers not doing anything gave me the creeps, but hurrah for a good person doing the right thing: and cutely and very, *very* carefully. I think he has slung sloths before!

Here’s the first time I thought sloths were cute, amazing, or buoyant (warning: turn down the volume, the narratrix’s girly sing-song peels paint)

  30. bob drummond says:

I love sloths so much that I ‘ll take ‘em any way you give ‘em to me- in a tree, a cardboard box or crossing a busy thorofare (?). Hey guys, slow down will ya! There’s a sloth crossing the road. Give him a brake ! hyuk, juk, juk !

  31. The movement at 0:16 is the very definition of “ehn!”.

  32. warrior rabbit says:

Yeah, but his choice of suspenders is questionable. But he was cute!

  33. But HOW cute is the rescuer?! *droooooling*

  34. I think it might have been a uniform of some sort, so I forgive him.

  35. BESTEST headline today!!

  38. I had NO IDEA sloths could swim. It goes faster swimming than it does walking or climbing.

    want want want one

  39. Andi from NC says:

    for the win!!!

  40. Me three! They’re veritable mersloths, and I’m sure they could do a flip into a graceful Esther Williams-meets-Edward Scissorhands backstroke.

  41. I’m presuming the COJScale ™ ranges from the universal 0 = naked molerat and 10 = clothed Jamin:
I say 7.5 for scooterguy, with an extra 0.5 for his serendipitous appearance and another 0.5 for degree of difficulty of Rescute + sloth-slinging abilities [holds up card with 8.5 and phone #]

  42. chanpon says:

But, but…what if this wasn’t where the sloth wanted to go??

  43. Emosloth?

  44. warrior rabbit says:

I can walk into a room and forget why I’m there, and I’m much faster than Mr. Sloth. I betcha anything the sloth no longer remembers where it was going or what it intended to do, so he’s probably feeling copacetic. Well, maybe a little dizzy.

  45. Thankyou for the info, Linda!! Sounds like an awesome place to spend a few days!

  46. victoreia says:

    *giggle*

  47. If I could have any pet in the world it would be a sloth. Not that I would ever keep a sloth as a pet, but lets just pretend it would be ok.

  48. 8.5 sound right. If he had showed his handsome smile a few seconds longer it would have been a 10.

  49. Carolyn says:

What a nice man to help that little guy. Hats off to ya sir!

  50. mintyheart says:
