Artful Dogger

When Border Collies are too gifted:

“My latest pastoral masterpiece captures the subversive interpretation of canine pathos of duplicity and diaphanous tension revealing a multilayered genius that illuminates my uncontrollable obsession with herding those #@!! sheep into a pen! They refuse to stay within the lines!”

“Should I grow a goatee? Or would that be too avant garde dog?”

A brush with genius, Susan S.

    @ NTM: [not scornful] *snerk*
Hey, Big Boy…. do ya come by this place often? [wink, wink; nudge, nudge!!]

    • Fird Birfle says:

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPS OMG I’m, like, so TO-tally imbecilic.

When I opened up CO, I saw NTM’s intro, about a different pic. Then the blasted ‘puter got all hung up. When I re-opened it, the new item about doggeh art wuz there and I DI-unt SEE that it’s a PYRIT gem.

*runs to the corner and kicks a dirt-clod in shame*

PS: “diaphanous tension” = especially elegant!!!

    Border goatee? Dicey proposition.

The perfect characterization of the Border Collie: really smart and really OBSESSED!

Those $%&* sheep are grass with this little darling! Love the doggie.

In the first photo puppy has a ” Did I do that?” look on his face.

    What a gorgeous puppy!

That is not a Border Collie. It is a bi-black Shetland Sheepdog pup and quite adorable too. Never put it past a Sheltie to actually be painting a masterpiece with its paint brush. The saying amongst Sheltie owners is that if Lassie had been a Sheltie, Timmy never would have fallen down the well.

    • Noodles says:

True! That little nosie is pointier than BC:s nose would be. Still, reminds my late bc as a puppy well enough to make me squee in delight and make grabby gestures in front of my laptop.

Ok, a black-and-white caterpillar would probably have similar effect. I’m as obsessed as my dog used to be…

    • bookmonstercats says:

Or if he had, Lassie wouldn’t have had to run back to get help ;)

    • ElishaB. says:

yes, yes, yes, Timmie would have stayed where Lassie (the Sheltie) put him (or at least barked him to death!) I know from personal experience, my Sheltie Peanut just never shut’s up when we are outside playing…he even goes bananas barking and herding the lawnmower!

    • pyrit says:

Wow, Susan L., thanks! I didn’t know about bi-black Shetland Sheepdogs! Cool.

I used to have a collie. Wonderful dog. She was so small people thought she was a big sheltie.

    • warrior rabbit says:

Bi-black? Hmm. That makes me sort of bi-curious, in a manner of speaking. No, really, I had to look that up (I don’t recommend it, you’ll get a lot of other results). So it’s sans tan.

Smartest dog we ever had was a collie/GS mix. Whip smart, she was. Just a really clever girl. Of course, the stupidest dog we ever had was her daughter, so… I don’t know what that means. I’ll shut up now.

AND he did my taxes. Got me a honkin’ refund, too. Thanks, Genius Dog!

Those %#$@ sheep are a waste of my time, but I can’t resist herding them!

  12. ralfast says:

Wait is that Sheltie playing D&D (see blue dice on first pic) while painting?

    Genius!
    :D

That teeny tongue in the top photo simply slays me!

Put me on the waiting list for one of this pup’s early works.

  19. Nick says:

THAT DOG IS SO INCREDIBLY ADORABLE I COULD JUST DIE!!!! (Unfortunately, if I died, I would miss a lot of my life, so I’m trying not to.)

  20. Moi, Actually says:

What’s with the “Rate this” bit? Somehow this seems to contradict the whole CO philosophy of generously embracing teh Qte in all its many and varied forms.

  21. (The Original) Mel says:

I have a wonderful photograph of my grandmother in 1920 with her pet sheltie sitting next to her. It is a formal studio photograph, and my grandmother has just a hint of a smile and her arm over the dog’s “shoulders” but the sheltie is grinning like a madman. She was 12. :)

    • ElishaB. says:

I would love to see this pic. Sheltie’s are the most amazing dogs and I love my to death (he’s 11).

That Border Collie might be so cute that it’s painful to cast your gaze upon it.

My bordercollie has no sheep to herd, so he herds my cat.
