[oooh! celebrity sighting! pyza in the comments hizzouse!]

  1. eh, love that little friend. very mcsadersons.

  2. I’m so sorry Pyza!! Kokosanka was clearly happy and loved.

  3. Pyza and her hams. What could be cuter or sadder?

  4. What a beautiful girl. It looks like she had a happy two and a half years.

(And a sweet, sweet Hello Kitty blanket.)

  5. Gail White says:

This is beautiful (sobbing into handkerchief).

  6. ecoquisitive says:

So glad this little ham had good times and got out in the sun again. It never gets any easier, does it. You know the heartbreak comes at the end–but you wouldn’t have missed it for the world.

  7. Jay in Oregon says:

OK, I’m a 39-year-old man and this tribute has me sniffling.

I hate saying goodbye to dearly-loved pets, so I don’t think I could deal with the short lifespan of hamsters. 😦

  8. So sad 😦 RIP sweet kokosanka 😦

  9. Sleep peacefully now, little hamlette. You were obviously very loved, and I know that your human misses you terrible.

  10. Er, make that “terribly”. I’m all verklempt, can’t type.

  11. Bye-bye, little sweetie–your photogenic beauty made us all smile.

My adorable muted calico Felix Felicis just died very suddenly about an hour ago, at the age of 3. I’m crying for you both right now.

  12. Mary Jane Rutkowski says:

Beautiful and sad … condolences. Remember the rainbow bridge.

  13. Cambridge Rat Mom says:

Yup, this girl loves her hams and they love her. The photos are wonderful. RIP, little one.

  14. Cambridge Rat Mom says:

Oh, dear, this is terrible. I send you hugs and hugs and a big box of tissues.

  15. Tiffany says:

I’m sorry for your loss. I have had many hammies over the years and loved them ever so much. Two-and-a-half is a long lifespan for a hamster, so Kokosanka obviously had excellent care. RIP little fluffy-pie.

  16. omg that first pic…. no…. T_T

  17. OHHH DebG Condolences… poor kitty and Hugs to you too.

  18. skippymom says:

The first picture is just so, so sadly sweet and beautiful.
And my next thought was, please don’t let people get all offended the way some did when we had a similar post about another of Pyza’s hamsters a couple of years ago. Please just allow it to be sad and sweet.

  19. Rest in peace, little hammy!
    What a gut-wrenchingly emotional post.
You actually have me fighting back the tears here.

  20. How sad.

My mama lost her Boo a couple weeks ago. 4.5 year old dwarf hamster. Was such a loved little friend. She was so old she was grey all over instead of black, took a nap on her little wheel, and passed in her sleep.

These little pets are like shooting stars. They light up your life for a brief moment and then move on.

  21. I meant to add – this is a beautiful tribute. I have to go find a tissue now.

  22. cellarmouse says:

    i’m sorry pyza … i’m sorry li’l kokosanka …

  23. Poor little Hammy Rest in Peace.

  24. skippymom says:

    Skippy sends you hugs.

  25. Poor little hammy. It looks like she had a most wonderful life, though. I am a sucker for little rodents, especially rats and hammies, but their short life spans are just so hard to deal with. It’s so hard to have your heart broken every couple of years.

  26. Debg@-very sorry!

This tribute is sweet. Letting the animal enjoy outside before passing. 😦 I am a big baby when it comes to animals.

  27. Poor lil’ hammy. That was beautiful. At least she got to enjoy Outside one more time before she went.

  28. Lillith says:

    My condolences.

  29. I am so sorry!

  30. Guinea Peeg Lover says:

So sad! My guinea pig turned 2 years old on the same day taht widdle ham died. 😥

  31. Not offensive , just very sweet and very sad. Obviously this owner loved little hamster and took great care of her. Many people have ceremonies for beloved departed pets and arrange them for final burial. I feel sad also for the remaining hammie. Everyone who has pets know that they will die, and by now I’d think that anyone on this site knows that although most of it is funny, it’s not a childrens’ site…adults should take this in stride.

  32. Katherine says:

Sorry for your loss, but I’m so happy the little monkey had a loving forever home.

  33. Hmm, tried to post this before but it disappeared.. I don’t see how it could be offensive…it is indeed very sad and sweet. This was obviously a much loved hammie…I feel sorry for the remaining one as well as the humans. Many people have ceremonies for deparated beloved pets and often arrange them for final resting with favorite toys, blankets, etc.

  34. My condolences. I’m very sorry for your loss.

  35. starling says:

I’m so sorry, and so young too (but what a wonderful name!).

  36. So sweet and sad. Pyza is brilliant. Her photos are so emotive.

  37. Malinki says:

We’ve had many ratties leave us way too early. Poor things get cancer quick and hard. These are our last three, for the exact same reason. Once they get those tiny little paws wrapped securely around your heart, it’s usually only a relatively short time.

It sucks, and I’m almost 44, so you’ve got company.

  38. Klara (Pyza) has had a really rough year with hamsters this year. Having a pet with such a short life span can be pretty difficult. No matter how many you loose, it doesn’t get any easier!

  39. TrixandSam says:

I’ve always loved the names Pyza gives her little hammies. They’re all Polish and they make me smile when I see them, especially since Polish names have a diminutive version of the formal name. Migotka (hammie giving the good bye kiss) and Kokosanka are just darned cute names!

My sincerest condolences, Pyza. And to Kokosanka’s little friends.

  40. I’m so sorry for your loss. 😦 We lost a dearly loved kitty, too, a couple of years ago.

  41. So sad. 😦 Good way to go, though. I hope I’m as lucky, many years from now.

  42. She was devilishly tricky to make, and disastrous to get wrong, just like the potion.

Thanks, everyone, for your kind words. I really needed them.

  43. I’m so sorry you lost your sweet calico. It’s a shock when they go, and especially when they go suddenly.

  44. Nooooo! Poor Hammy! RIP little fluffball

  45. RIP Lil’ HamPants. I hope you and my recently departed, beloved, and very much missed, cat (also on May 7th), Stinky, are friends, chillin’ in Heaven.

  46. browngrl says:

my condolences Pyza, RIP little ham

  47. I’m so, so sorry! What a terribly young age!

  48. Good night sweet hammy, And flight of angels sign the to thy rest.

  49. DogEared says:

so sorry for your loss Pyza….your pics show so much of the love you have for your pets. Kudos to Meg for great hovertexts as well.

  50. JackieRose says:

Such a sweet tribute. My heart goes out to Pyza and to those who mentioned recently departed feline companions – and to anyone who’s lost an animal (or bird, or fish, or reptile) friend. Whether they have fur, feathers, fins or scales, they are still family to those of us who love them.

  51. My beagle sends you doggy kisses. I’m so incredibly sorry for your loss. 😦

  52. Pyza’s hamsters are the luckiest little hamsters in the world.

  53. FullyGrownMan says:

I just teared up at my desk at work, and had to pretend I was just concentrating really hard.

    Requiescat in pace, Kokosanka.

  54. I’ve been on a break from having hamsters for more than six months now. They’re so sweet but there’s just so much heartbreak.

  55. Terribly sad – I loved and lost a ham at the age of 4 – will always remember you little Fieldy – condolences to Pyzar, you gave Kokosanka the best life.

  56. Elge Premeau says:

Blea! Tears squirting from my eyes and I’m out of Kleenex!

    Lucky Hammy had great peeps.

  57. Leilani says:

This just ruined my day. *snif* I’m so sorry.

  58. I’m so sorry Pyza. What a beautiful tribute to your sweet little girl.

  59. Boo Hoo Hoo Hoo ! So sad but so beautiful.

  60. Such a beautiful Good-Bye to the much loved Kokosanka! She was blessed.

  61. awww 😥 shedding some tears over here 😥 i’m so sorry for your loss pyza

so when i told my husband, to console me he said “he’s up there playing with sammy” 😀 (sammy is my little guy in my avitar, and from this post: ) that made me smile 🙂

  62. Peppermint Mouse says:

    And sowwy fow mistake.

  64. Peppermint Mouse says:

My gwandma has a wall hanging about the wainbow bwidge in one of how thwee bathwooms.

I have no idea why I’m talking like Ming-Ming.

  65. Yeah, I’ve given up on rodents for just that reason. They’re just too sad.

  66. Pyza lives in Poland- hence the polish names! 🙂

  67. Pyza, I’m sorry about your little guy. I know he had a happy fun life with you. I love that you love hammies so much, and you are one of the reasons I got one. Thank you for all your photos.

  68. Barb, so sorry about Stinky. Pets should never leave us. Yup, that’s my philosophy.

  70. LyndaLu says:

Age has nothing to do with grief of any kind. It’s a matter of how much you’ve attached your feelings to whoever/whatever you lost. Also, I think, how much real love you’ve received in your life. I can get practically hysterical over a mama kangaroo deserting her joey when I just see it on TV, and I’m 55. I’m a case! (-:

  71. well phooey! i check CO before bed to cheer meself up – and now i feel horribuhls! Lovely little Kokosanka – what a sweetie-ham! My condolences to Pyza and may your little one rest in peace in the ham-garden in the sky! ((sniffle))

  72. Pyza, you’re my favorite hamster photographer!!! I’m so sorry to hear about Kokosanka but she obviously lived a wonderful well-loved life. I have cried every time I lost a hammie. My thoughts are with you.

  73. That is one smiling hamster I’ve ever seen! Awwdorable.

  74. Condolences, Pyza. I don’t know who I think I am to be thanking you for loving your friends so, but I thank you nonetheless.

  75. I’ve got you both beat. I’m 53 and I’m not only teary about little ham here but it has me remembering my own 2 guinea pigs (actually my son’s, who grew up and left and I insisted the gp’s stay!) and whose best friend was our ham named Pikachu.

Give me an even remotely sad animal story and I fall to pieces.

  76. dinky cho chan says:

i come here for happy. to be cheered up. i just cried my eyes out at this one.

  77. So sorry for your loss. Bitter sweet pics. How did you know your hamster was going to die…it looks so healthy in the pictures.

  78. Rest in peace, Kokosanka. 😦

In Swedish, “kokosanka” means “coconut duck”. I wonder what it means in Polish?

  79. How sad and cute. Funny name tho, “coco(nut)duck” in Swedish?

  80. I had pet mice, hamsters and gerbils growing up. I cried for each one when they passed and they all got proper burials. When my beloved calico passed at age of 17 it ripped my heart out. I got her when I was 19 and she slept with me, ate with me, did tasks with me (she was terrific company) and greeted me at the door everyday. She died in 2003 and I still miss her…she was a wonderful life force. Whether a hammie or an elephant, size doesn’t matter because they grab your heart in a big way!

  81. Rachael says:

My deepest sympathies go out to all who have loved and lost precious animal friends. They bring immeasurable joy to our lives, then leave our hearts feeling empty and torn. Little hammikins will be missed forever by those who loved her. I feel tremendously sad at her passing but I know she’s waiting at Rainbow Bridge. ♥♥♥

  82. Beautifully expressed–I teared up.

  83. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if our pets lived as long as we do? [SIGH!] I’m taking care of my sweet, elderly pupper right now, who is reaching the end of her lifespan. It’s killing me. But of course after an appropriate period of mourning, I will do it all again, because I can’t imagine living without an animal companion to love! They are worth the tears!

  84. That was beautiful. And it made me cry …

  85. Fird Birfle says:

My condolences added to the dandelions, here for you ….

  86. Fird Birfle says:

oh debg; I feel truly devastated for/ with you.

When my dearest Salinger died awhile back (at maybe 18 yrs), it felt like I had a huge bruise where my heart had been.

My sincerest condolences and peace to you.

  87. So sweet and so sad!!!

  88. Catsquatch says:

Rest in peace pretty little fuzzy.

  89. Katherine says:

Rest in peace little hammy. So cute…

  90. “Coconut duck”!! Wow… that made me laugh 🙂

Kokosanka (I’m her owner, btw) means “Coconut Cookie” in Polish.

  91. Hello, I am Kokosanka’s owner.
I am so amazed and happy that Cute Overload paid tribute to my beloved little monster.
*Thank You* everyone for the wonderful, heartfelt comments.
    I appreciate them so much…

PS. Just a minor error – Kokosanka lived over 1.5 years (1 year 8 months, to be exact) and not 2.5. I wish she had, though… 😦

  92. Thanks, debg – it’s been a rough 10 days, but it gets a little less intense every day that passes by. I agree with Beth – I need some time to reflect and mourn, and when I am ready, there will most definitely be another fuzzball, that I can take care of, and he/she, me.

I recommend cremation, if anyone is confused on what to do with a beloved pet, who has died. It gave me tremendous comfort and closure to have her back home with me (even though she never actually left). I have something I can touch, that symbolizes the irreplaceable life she and I shared for 14 years. That makes me smile, more than it does make me cry. Though, there’s still some of that happening, now and then. Stinky was my first, and she will be in my heart and memory forever.

  93. Shannon says:

It hurts me when anyone loses a pet which is so clearly loved. I am sorry for your loss. I have tears in my eyes.

  94. ajm1125 says:

Oh no! First Lucy 4.0 and now one of Pyza’s babies. It’s a rough season for the hamsters. I lost mine recently too. Condolences to Pyza. 😦

  95. My condolences for your hammy loss! What an adorable little critter, and what tender moments…

I have had exactly 1 hamster in my life…but he lived to be 4 years old! He was like a titanium hamster. By the end, he was VERY chubby and no longer loved his wheel, but he did still love a gentle roll in his pink ball (so unmanly!) I am sure that somewhere he is still rolling around in that pink ball, cheeks stuffed, while heaven’s cats look longingly upon him (“so close, yet so far!”)

I’ve had many pets in my life…various cats, 2 dogs, a horse, a couple sheep, a cow…but New Hamster was special. They all are.

  96. musicnote says:

Oh, my gosh … my shirt is soaked from the tears streaming down my cheeks and falling off my face. Had a rough day; crying on and off all through it; came here for a smile … and all the hammie and kitty and other furbaby losses, the touching remembrances and the kind, sweet condolences have pushed me right into a major crying jag. It’s OK … needed to get it out; crying, too, for all my departed pet kids that are waiting at the Bridge.
No matter how brief or long their time with us is, we’re never ready to say goodbye … but, thankfully, each one of them forever holds that little individual piece of our hearts that belonged to just them. Then one day, when we get to the Bridge … all the parts are put back together.

  97. musicnote says:

debg … I’m especially stricken by the loss of your Felix Felicis … far too young for a purrbaby! Please forgive me if I’m too intrusive, but what caused your kittypie’s passing? You don’t have to share if you’d rather not, but I’m so concerned.

  98. musicnote says:

So sorry for the loss of your Stinky, Barb. Believe me, I know too well how very hard it is. My heart hurts for you.

  99. musicnote says:

Hi, Kat, I’m fairly new here at CO, but I read through all the comments made to Pyza in sympathy for her Lil’ HamPants; so very sad … I extended my condolences to her, also. But I want to extend my sympathies to you, also. Your little Sammy was adorably precious, too and I know you were missing him. I just have to tell you how much I enjoyed seeing both the birthday buffets you put out for your Sammy … so amazingly teeny tiny and so colorful. This is my first exposure to the miniature world of hammies and it is absolutely delightful. All the best to you …

  100. Nassegris says:

I’m crazy about hamsters, mice and rats, and this made me, too, sniffle like little girl.

I’ve only ever had one tiny animal (aside from fish and newts), and it was my gorgeous ratette, Norpan. I adored that little girl so much – I was only twelve at the time and she only lived for two years, but even now, at 34, I get a little teary-eyed remembering her.

We’d make her tiny ice-cream cones by taking the end off a regular cone and filling it with ice cream, and she’d hold it in her little paws and lick with her pink little tongue, turning it over, and over.

Broke my heart to lose her. 2 years is just about enough time to completely win your heart and devotion over, and crack your heart into a myriad little pieces when you lose them.

I have three cats in my family, 10 years, 13 years, and 20 years old. I don’t even want to think about losing any of them.

  101. Oooh, how adorable. How wonderful that the little one’s last days were so happy!

  102. Thank you, musicnote. It really is true, that a heart can ache.

  103. Losing a pet is losing a member of the family and it never gets any easier.
It’s heartbreaking and when I lost my dog to cancer people turned to me and said
    ‘Oh it’s just a dog’
She was not just a dog, she was as much a loved and cared about member of our family as any of us, and as your dear Kokosanka was to you.

Take comfort in the fact that you did what was best for her despite how much it hurts you.
Who knows given time you may find another little ham in need of a loving wonderful home and you’ll be just the person to give it to them.

For now know that everyone here feels truly sorry for your loss and understands how much it hurts. x

  104. This is sad, but this is also old news. I saw this at least a year ago, maybe longer. WTH?

  105. bob drummond says:

I greive for your little hammie just like I grieved for both of my false map turtles when each of them died. I drove to a lake in smithtown,ny and buried each of them there on the shoreline. I still miss them both after all these years.

  106. emily post says a suitable period for mourning is at least one year. we say the best time is just after dawn, but what do we know?

  107. Holly Kinrade says:

so sad but yet so sweet, it bought tears to my eyes. RIP little ham 🙂 xx
