  1. OMG. OMFG. After the cat-dolphin-snorgling CO really is trying hard, and WINS.

  2. Theresa says:

OMGOMGOMG (passes out from lack of oxygen)

  3. silentk says:

Awww… there is definitely something about the macho-man firefighter taking the time amid the chaos to save even the teensiest of adorable little lives.

  4. lurkingsmirk says:

    awww so sweet!

  5. Meriweather says:

Poor kitty must have had a bad day! Fortunately the Fur-And-Rescue guys are on hand.

  6. Mary (the first) says:

OMG I hardly even had to glance at this before starting to get teary. There is nothing and I mean NOTHING sexier than strong men being tender… to anything. Kittens of course, are extra. OMG. (I assume I don’t even need to mention this guy for Mr. April in the CO Cute Men Calendar. That goes without saying, right?)

      • Lizzy says:

Hehehe, ho ho, oh my… gonna have to wait for the BF to leave the house before I look at that again…

      • Shari says:

I can’t tell if I’m getting a hot flash or what. Sweet kitten…compassionate and handsome fireman…buff guys and baby animals…(furiously fans self). A girl could get all perspirey.

        • o no he/ she/ it DI-unt!! says:

No, no dear. A wee bit o’ Suthrahn wisdom, from me own Nana.

          *ahem*
“HORSES ‘sweat’; MEN ‘perspire’ and WIMMIN …
          [dramatic pause] …..’glow’.”

          *curtseys elegantly, while
clutching her strand of Nana’s pearls & lace hanky*

          • Theresa says:

            Hehehehe

          • Shari says:

My own sainted grandmother – from the Very Deep South – told me the same thing when I was in high school. She, and you, are right. For the most part.

But when I checked out the website with the ripped guys and baby annymals, and the article with the kind fireman, and gazed at the sweet kitten…well, I went way beyond “perspire.”

          • Jen S says:

Well, that fine young gentleman has me glowing like a horse!

        • Jeez, you´re not alone with your hot flush there! ;p

        • Beth says:

Yeah, me too!!! He can rescue me any day!!!

          • o no he/ she/ it DI-unt!!! says:

pardon my impertinence, but I think he’s in all that gear to rescue those who are actually *experiencing* a (medical/ not emotional) emergency?????

But I totally understand your perspective :)

      • Mary (the first) says:

OMG I am ROFL at this. Who knew there was such a thing on the internets? (I guess I should have.) Of course it is now bookmarked under “cute animals”. :: sigh :: I’m aglow. (Although, I admit, the non-posed ones like the firefighter or whats-his-name with the monkeh, capture my heart more than posed. But. I’ll make do! :D )

      • Andi in NC says:

        I’m diggin’ that….

      • wannadance says:

        yeeeee haaaaaasaa!!!

    • ash says:

      I agree. I melt.

    • Noelegy says:

One of my favorite photos of my hubby was taken when Philo was just a tiny kitten. Hubby is feeding Philo, and he’s a little unshaven and his baseball cap is on backwards because it was a weekend and he was doing chores, had possibly been mowing the lawn or likewise. He has Philo in one hand and the bottle in the other. All you can see of Philo is his teeny little kittenhead sticking out of my hubby’s hand. Hubby is gazing down at Philo with an intense expression of solicitude.

This was the same hubby who did NOT want to adopt another kitten, especially one that had to be taken care of as constantly as a kitten as small as Philo needed, and then came the morning that I heard him in the bathroom saying, “C’mon, you can make a poop for me,” and I thought, “We’re keeping this kitten.” (Originally the idea had been just to foster him until he got stronger and then give him back to sister-in-law, who had rescued him).

So yeah, guys being tender to helpless animals = powerful Cute. :)

    • MamaLana says:

Yes, yes. We are waiting breathlessly for the CO Cute Men Calendar!!!!! Really~

  7. Nikki says:

Aw. Sweet little kitty is so lucky to have such safe hands holding him. I love this photo.

  8. Jesseeca says:

    I ADORE THIS.

  9. tammy. says:

MUST. KNOW. BACK. STORY. *feverishly begins to research*

    • Ricalynn says:

      Here ya go:

      http://missoulian.com/news/local/article_4b0d88bc-50c1-11e0-aeda-001cc4c03286.html

This is from my hometown paper. Silly me, I assumed there was more than one CO fan in this town and someone else had already submitted it the day it came out!!

      • coel says:

They didn’t know the name of the kitten so they are calling her Smoky!

      • Theresa says:

        From the article:

Minutes later, the kitten was in the back of an ambulance, cradled in the arms of emergency medical technician Paige Ostanhowski, who held an oxygen mask to a button nose turning a healthy shade of pink.

“Button nose”! “Healthy shade of pink”! Squeeee!

      • Miriam says:

Thanks so much for posting the story.

      • Mary (the first) says:

Thank you! I love this. I swear I’m going to Montana someday.

        • Cheri Leoncio says:

Ladies, just so you know….Jeff Cunniff is few and far between even in Montana. I know because I was born and raised here. He is a rare commodity even for firefighters. I know this too because I was one and worked around them for nearly 7 years. This man is EXCEPTIONAL. His girlfriend better make him her HUSBAND soon! (j/k) heehee. That was an EXCEPTIONAL ambulance crew too! We cannot let them go unnoticed :)

      • Charlotte says:

Oh god, that’s so sad that the other kitties died and there are more unaccounted for…

        Smoky’s a lucky little girl…

        • tammy. says:

i know! so sad! i hope that more are found alive and ok. i have heard of kitties getting scared and hiding for over a week without food because of a fire. i am sure that it was horribly scary.

      • mtkees says:

Don’t feel bad @Ricalynn, I’m here in Missoula as well and didn’t submit. Of course, nothing I submit ever gets posted so I’ve become a little less vigilant.

      • tammy. says:

thank you so much for posting this!!!

  10. Jane says:

Saving Kittens: Because firefighters weren’t already hot enough.

  11. ElishaB says:

Wow, peeps you gotta read the story. (See post above)
Several other pets did not make it out of the house fire, but this little girl did. Thank you big, brave fireman….God Bless you and all those who rescue animals!

    • feezie says:

It’s so sad for the poor other animals. I’m glad that the lil kitten was rescued by the now even cuter firefighter.

  12. Christine says:

baaaah! are little kittie’s eyes glazed over? or is that just the shot?

    • wannadance says:

in trauma shock, i imagine. but they breathe fast and that was a ton of oxygen coming in.

my eyes would be glazed too. i’d think i died and gone to heaven…
i’d say ‘is this heaven?’ and BRETT would say
‘no, it’s MONTANA.’ then i could draw my last, a happy woman, even though i am old enough to be his grandmother.

  13. ash says:

I love the little back foot up displaying pads and toe beans for all to see.
    Thank you gorgeous firefighter!

  14. hirish says:

  15. julie b says:

Neat thing is, some of the bigger fire depts. are learning to resuscitate animals and are carrying oxygen masks that fit dog and cat faces, i.e. smaller, with snouts.

    • victoreia says:

I’m told that you can do compression-only CPR on dogs and cats. They should be lying on their sides, and you use two-finger compressions, like you would with an infant.

      • Colonel Jenna says:

I was actually taught dog/cat in a CPR class I took once, as an unofficial aside to the official material. We didn’t have a mannequin but we all paid a lot of attention. One of the students even told about doing CPR on mice. I’d take an official Pet CPR class in a flash. (Note to self: talk to the vet.)

  16. (The Original) Mel says:

I see firefighters every day. Hahahahaaaaaa!

  17. Gigi says:

Yeah for cute firefighter who saves all kinds of lives.

  18. shay says:

My brother showed me an article a number of years ago about firefighters giving oxygen to a pet rat after a fire. Such kindness makes me happy! On a related note, if you have pets, its a good idea to pick up some “In case of emergency, pets inside” stickers for the windows to alert firefighters!

    • ratchic says:

I was remembering the same story!!! Maybe is the one you are thinking of out of Pocatello (sp?) Idaho? I have a B &W news paper pic of a rat being held by the firemans big gloved hand and a cat sized oxygen mask covering the rats head and shoulders. According the the story I remember, the firemean saw the cage and grabbed the whole thing outside thinking the charred paper couldn’t possibly hold anything alive with all that smoke. He found the rat alive under all the paper!!

  19. Decca says:

So glad this little one made it. Horray for heroes who care for all living things.

  20. dub1 says:

Inversely proportional to kitten-huffing device [KHD]

  21. dogsleder says:

People! It makes no difference what this person looks like. What’s important is the kindness and compassion and the fact that a life was saved.

    • Waheeda says:

Yes but but but the gorgeousness makes it extra special. :)

      • Mrs. Kravitz says:

Even if he weren’t gorgeous, rescuing a helpless kitty, rat, or puppy does wonders as a gorgeousness-booster.

        • bagoguts says:

          Oh yeah it does! :-)

        • There´s no such thing as an ugly person that can do such a sweet thing in my book, no matter if they look like Quasimodo.

Oh okay, being gorgeous on top *does* help though… ;)

          • wannadance says:

actually, to me, looks don’t count for anything. i have always fallen for people who are craggy or have lines or sadness in their faces,

the kind of people like my best fren’ who spent seven years of his childhood in a nazi concentration camp and all 50 of his family died but he did not. all you have to do is look into his eyes to see that but also all the joy he takes from life. he is 81. i adore him. i kept trying to catch him between wives, but was always a day late and a dollar short.
he was liberated when he was 17 and has spent the rest of his life living it. he has scars and i think he is gorgeous…

            snif snif.

          • Wannadance – it´s always the “aura” or whatever you wanna call it that makes people appear beautiful to us, not the actual physical looks. I have wonderful friends that, if I saw them in the street, I would say they aren´t very attractive, but to me because of *who* they are, they are gorgeous/beautiful and I love them. :) If that makes sense…

    • feezie says:

Rescuing the kitten makes him more cute!

  22. Lainey says:

I want the name and number of this guy! I found my dream man.

  23. nads says:

So, are we ever going to get that Men of CO Calender, or…..???

  24. Waheeda says:

Awww I had wanted to know the backstory too but now I wish I didn’t. Some of the other babies didn’t make it. :( :(

  25. Kar says:

    Rescute tag please!!!

  26. Felic says:

It’s really sad that other wonderful critters died in the fire. But her little story here is very sweet and I hope she is loved and pampered for the rest of her hopefully long and healthy life. I hope someone does something special for this fireman :)

  27. o no he/ she/ it DI-unt!! says:

    a-HEM!!! “ResQte” Tag, please.

Jeez, you can only get adequate Cuteness Peeps these days.
*Walks off into the distant sunset, muttering quietly.*

    • wannadance says:

      every party has a pooper
      that’s why we invited you
      party pooper

      • o no he/ she/ it DI-unt!!! says:

        eez all goot !!!!

I was pretty much just tryin’ to get a rise outta Sharpy or whichever technospecialist is hovering hereabouts, anyhow …

  28. Ashley says:

I’d really love a kitty close up for this pic!

  29. Yay for Montanans! probably some of the nicest people I have met in my lifetime.
And especially Yay for little smokey.. May she have a long and happy life free of future fires.

  30. Laura says:

If that guy is single, and on any dating websites, he would be stupid not to use this as his profile picture! He will never be lonely again. :D

  31. chanpon says:

Ok, next use the nip-scented canister, please.

  32. pookie says:

This picture killed me so ded I had to go take a two-hour nap after I saw it! No lie!

  33. Jill says:

There is a special place on earth for people like this guy, where cats curl up in his lap at night and purr in his ear every morning. Dogs bring him newspapers and slippers and toys and make him laugh when he’s sad. He’s a lucky man and his partner is a lucky whatever.

  34. Kristy says:

This is almost as sexy as that one time, in band camp… I mean that one time on CO when there was a video of a guy hand raising a little hummingbird.

    • tamibrat says:

Maintained daily devotion. Hummingbird guy WINS. :) I was all awww’s and oooo’s over the kitteh toes splayed against big manly latex free fingers, though. 0_o

  35. bagoguts says:

We need a Men of CO category!!! And a calendar!!

  36. Anne says:

    Hero.

    Enough said.

  37. musicnote says:

What an absolute sweetie … and so is that furbaby!!!

  38. Alex says:

OMG! are all American firefighters that hot and cute??? *drools*

  39. jen says:

omg there is NOTHING sexier than a man being kind to a little critter. aaaahhhn. big hugs to him. isn’t there a saying that goes something like, “you can determine a man’s character by the way he treats defenseless animals”.

    • o no he/ she/ it DI-unt!!! says:

      yes. yes there is.

    • wannadance says:

i shoulda been paying attention to that with my last husband. mean to My animals and also very mean to waitpeople and clerks and cashiers. why did it not dawn on me that it meant i was next?

      • o no he/ she/ it DI-unt!!! says:

If you’re anything like me, it was because you perhaps saw some of his better behavior and you figured that he would rise to more of THAT part of his character, more often. Another quite wise sentence, which really hit me in the solar plexus was in a better-than-average pop psych book. Basically, the description went thus: “while you might be infatuated with someone when you see them at their BEST, don’t FALL IN LOVE WITH his/her *potential*”….or, to finetune it just a bit, you could fall in love with his/her potential, but not make semi-permanent commitments/ move in together/ date exclusively based on brief experience with him/ her.

*climbs down, off Lucy’s Therapy Booth / Soapbox*

  40. ammy says:

OKAY this is too much for me to comment on here again! =’)
It’s good to know tough firefighters are being gentle on kittehs awwwww

  41. Carolyn says:

THANK YOU GOD AND FIRE FIGHTER!

  42. Pam says:

    Bless his heart.

  43. WendyPinNJ says:

OMG! I LOVE FIREMEN! OMG! I LOVE KITTENS! OMG! I DON’T EVEN HAVE WORDS FOR HOW I FEEL ABOUT FIREMEN WHO RESCUE KITTENS! AND THEN GIVE THEM OXYGEN!

I WANT TO SMOTHER THEM BOTH WITH KISSES!

Do you think that’s a bad thing?

    • o no he/ she/ it DI-unt!!! says:

nope. It’s healthy and fun, too :)

      • WendyPinNJ says:

Oh goody! Now to figure out where the heck Missoula is and get there, tout de suite!

    • wannadance says:

kitten needs a chance to breathe some before she gets smothered with kisses. you could always stick her on your chest for conforting…uh…

  44. Fluffy says:

I got a submish on CO. I’m so excited!

  45. Shari says:

Google can help us get our fix of hot men – er, I mean firemen – rescuing pets. Some of these pictures were very touching:

    http://www.google.com/images?um=1&hl=en&rlz=1T4GGHP_enUS415US415&biw=1419&bih=664&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=fireman+rescues+%28cat+OR+dog+OR+pet%29&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=

  46. And on a funny note….

  47. Carolyn says:

Who is this man, and how do I get him to marry me?

  48. Princess Fiona says:

That fireman looks like Heath Ledger! (melt)

  49. carol swindell says:

this man is a hero . There are many firemen that help save our fur babies ( so important to our well being). Thank you so much Mr Fireman and hero.

  50. BatBlaster says:

And why isn’t this tagged as ResQte? And also, I can so imagine a little girl walking up to him and saying “Awww, you saved Mr. Snuggles”

  51. Awwww…this is just the sweetest thing…

  52. Gail White says:

Obviously, a guy who wants to be a total chick magnet will carry a small Scottish fold or equivalent in his pocket at all times. Are you listening, men?

  53. Becky, Bubba's mum says:

God bless this man of men and please let the little kitty be OK.

  54. swimmer love says:

That Firerfighter is so nice thats amazingly amazing! I ABSOLUTLY 100% agree with Becky, Bubba’s mum

  55. Alex Kelly says:

Dude, this guy is my COUSIN. I see him all the time.

  56. JME says:

Would it be a downer if I told everyone that I know that firefighter, and he’s gay?

Because that’s totally not what I’m doing. I don’t know that firefighter at all, and have no idea what his sexual orientation is. Sorry if I alarmed anyone (or raised any false hopes for CO’s gay male readers).

  57. kittydaddy says:

    Bad title.

    Should have been:

    “Kitten rescues firefighter from macho-ism”

  58. Becky says:

How many times has this young man been asked out since this pix got out?

  59. nisox9 says:

This guy just cleaned off his sin slate and pre ordered his wings for this act :)

  60. Hailey says:

Pour little kitten I feel so bad I hope it is ok

  61. GwenN says:

Updated today in our local paper, kitty is fine & healthy. Brett still awesome too
