Science! Gone! Haywire!

BELFRY, ROMANIA — Mad scientists at the Centre for Unwarranted Research (CUR) today unveiled an ambeagle, a cross between an amoeba and a beagle. The creature, seen here in this magnified photo, answers to the name of “Gloopy.”

We’ve crossed a line here, Christy S.

    C.U.R. + Snuggie + Beagle-ish person = CuteOverload HOMERUN!!!!

(I realize, that I”m comitting heresy by not mentioning a baseball term rather than a feetsball term. You’ll be ok, I’m fairly sure….)

  2. O NO He/ She/ It DI-unt!!! says:

(please visualize slashes, through the word “not”, above. Thank you)

    Signed,
    Gah.

  3. brinnann says:

Looks more like a Cabbage Patch Pup to me.

  4. theoriginalmel says:

If I irritate it, will it break off into another ambeagle for me to play with and enjoy?

  5. Kar says:

Awww. I do that with my kittens even though they hate it. Something maternal makes us cover up loved ones. My grandmother used to call up from another state and tell us,

I’m cold, put on another sweater.

    Dear Science,

Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Usually.

But in this case, by all means, go ahead. Can I place an order for one?

    Thanks in advance!

    Yours,
    tlee.

    • Theresa says:

Ahh, Tracylee, you beat me to it!! I was going to say “Just because you can doesn’t mean you should!” *Solemn, 30s B&W movie vibe* There are things in which we are not meant to meddle!

PS: “Unwarranted Research”– big SNERK there, NTMTOM.

  8. Peter says:

He answers to “Gloopy”? Is he stupid?

    • earlybird1 says:

Objection! Beagles are intelligent and intuitive little creatures. Stubborn, yes… stupid, no. :) We are Beagle owners ourselves, as you can prolly guess. LOVE them!!

      • earlybird1 says:

Oh, NOW I see as I read further that “Gloopy” apparently means “stupid” in Russian. (meekly backs away, smoothing down ruffled feathers and vowing to read all comments next time)

  9. Pam Sinclair says:

    Haaang on, Gloopy,
    Gloopy hang on!
    YEAH, yeah, YEAH, yeah….

    • Rebecca says:

Adorb Amoebas of puppulence, and now eeeeeaaaarrrrwwoooorrrmmmmsss…., no powers of concentration left!!! Love CO just for that very reason : )

    • Cambridge Rat Mom says:

You beat me to it! ;-)

    • O NO He/ She/ It DI-unt!!! says:

      “Gliddy glup Gloopy,
Nibby-nabby-noobie, lay lay, low low …
      Sabba sibby sabba ….”

Apologies to Sir John of Denver. And to Gloopy.

    • tracylee says:

my initial thought as well! but I didn’t know how to get it across as eloquently as you just did.

  10. April's NaNa says:

This reminds me of “Dinky”, my aunt’s little “weiner” dog, who would grab the corner of her sofa aphgan and roll several times ’til he looked like a burrito! So cute!

  11. Sunny says:

Thank heavens I’m alone, ’cause I just laughed so loud at this picture that it registered a 1.0 earthquake.

OK, maybe not THAT loud, but…you get the idea.

  12. ilikechocolatemilk says:

    “sausage-flavored paramecium” – BRILLIANT, NTMTOM

  13. Wvaden says:

It looks like Gloopy is oozing out of elephant ‘tocks.

  14. Nikki says:

NTMTOM, your brilliantly quirky mind, your Centre for Unwarranted Research plus the Ambeagle reminded me of an old Far Side cartoon “Things That Live in a Drop of Water, and Some of Their Furniture…”. Featuring amoebae and little couches.

  15. stephanie says:

    What has science DONE?!

  16. Linda says:

Did you know that in Russian, gloopy means stupid? Please rename this little fellow. He probably has benoeba cousins.

    • Mel says:

His name isn’t actually Gloopy; that’s just the fake news article. I know this little fellow, and he has a real name :)

  17. Sara says:

    I has a warm.

  18. Marilia says:

    HAhaha! IO love this amoeba-beagle!!!!

  20. skippymom says:

I had a sausage-flavored paramecium for lunch today! It was delicious!

    • Sharpy says:

personally, i’ve never been able to find a place with good cell service.

      • O NO He/ She/ It DI-unt!!! says:

        paramecium/ cell.

Wow. As a non-biology major, I had to bust a few fuses before I got THAT one.

        (phew.)

But it was a good one :)

  21. jen8 says:

We have an infestation of amebakittehs here. They don’t have that put-upon face like the amebeagle, though.

  22. O NO He/ She/ It DI-unt!!! says:

    – Also: will. somebody . please . contact . William. Shatner.??

    – Exclamation! Points! Gone! Haywire! –

  23. Gigi (the original one) says:

You had me at sausage-flavored paramecium :-)

    • O NO He/ She/ It DI-unt!!! says:

doesn’t quite have the romantic sway, of “You had me, at ‘hello’!!” …..

but, nonetheless, I see “the logic inherent in the systems”.

  24. theoriginalmel says:

    *pushes glasses up higher*

The center of the cell is called the barkleus.

    • Mocha says:

And ambeagles absorb water through pawsmosis. *adjusts pocket protector*

    • arv9y says:

Now THAT made me laugh out loud. Goood one orig.

    • brinnann says:

:( My photoshopsynthesis comment must’ve been deleted. It doesn’t even show that it’s awaiting moderation anymore.

      • brinnann says:

And we’re back in moderation. Is it because photo-shop-synthesis looks like spam when it’s all one word? Or does the ModMasheen have a limit on the amount of puns it will accept in one post?

  25. paulajeanne says:

Watch out for the contractile vacuole, bet he has good aim

  26. Wend says:

All right, you almost made me forget what I came to the intertoobs to do, but now it’s back to serious…. wait, was that a paramecium floating past?

  27. tiarosa says:

Whatever NTMTOM gets paid it isn’t enough!

  28. fish eye no miko says:

Awww, it’s the cutest abomination against nature ever!

  29. Theo says:

I’m very tired and burnt-out and not feeling at all clever right now… but Mike, you are bins and buckets of the best possible variety of nuts. w00t! :D

  30. arv9y says:

Wow, you peeps really are quick and funny and make me laff a lot. Thank you one and all.

  31. baroolover says:

This little pumpkin made me cry. Looks just like my Romy Dog (Romeo) that passed away last summer. He was 16.5 years old.

    • O NO He/ She/ It DI-unt!!! says:

      sincere and understanding condolences, baroolover.

    • Christy S says:

So sorry for your loss. The puppy pictured (real name Chuck) is my dog, and having loved his little face for 5 years now, I know your heart is hurting. Love the name Romeo. :-)

  32. Part beagle… part blob…. oozing your way as he takes over the world one green glob at a time. Just remember to look in the barbers sink before you get your hair wet.

  33. Hon Glad says:

It came from outer space and it can just go back there.

  34. Romanian says:

In Romania CUR means ASS :)

  35. Rose says:

Okay, first write up of 2011 to make me laugh out loud. Good work.

  36. Trabb's Boy says:

Oh, NTMTOM, you are so cilia!

  37. Mary says:

It’s all frozen here in Atlanta. Pete likes being warm and cozy, and he fell asleep again right after I did this…

  38. KittyMarthaPoo says:

Beagles are total snugglers. I know, I have one of my own :) But mine insists on TOTALLY being covered, even his snout. The cold cruel air of the outside room is far too traumatic for his pampered self.. :)

  39. Rooanne says:

Maybe we could just make a blanket statement about beagles, their blankies, and biology?

  40. JME says:

There’s a little online game called Cellcraft which involves the creation of an amoeba with the DNA of a duckbilled platypus inserted into its genome. True story.

  41. Kim says:

Beagles love warmth and being wrapped up. My amoebeag does that all the time – I call him “The Beagley Burrito”

  42. This is why we ban Weasley products.

  43. Yeah, but have you seen the amoepug? http://blogpress.w18.net/photos/11/01/12/2307.jpg

  44. ManWifeDog says:

This dog is certainly cute in his green blanket, but Karma the Spoiled Rotten Yorkie stole our green faux fur throw and immersed herself in it and it is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. Was just about to submit this to the Cuter Overload team and then I saw this. Check her out anyway — she’s too cute — I think she thinks it’s grass!!!

  45. Christy S says:

Aw, that’s my Chuck! Thanks for posting. :-)
He is currently doing the same exact thing under a quilt. With the exception of deciding that this time, his head should be covered.
