A New Wrinkle

What makes us pugs so cute? It’s the wrinkles. I have more loose skin on my neck than most dogs have on their whole bodies. I’m wrinkled everywhere…

… and I do mean everywhere.

Hey, I can taco shell my tongue, too! …But I don’t think I can do multiple folds. That’s a real talent.

  2. Digitoonie says:

Sad to say, but as soon as I saw this picture I tried to do that with my tongue.

    …vewwy impwessive.

Followup question: can he (she?) make a Fishy-Face??

  4. muttluver says:

NO no no. Wrinkle rule= rule of sharpei.

    Just sayin.

  5. Theresa says:

Why don’t I get cuter the more wrinkles I get?

  6. kibblenibble says:

Peruse the last five posts: Pug, Pom, pouches, polydactyl, panda. :-)

  7. Ellen W. says:

No! The cutest thing is the snorfling!

  8. Mocha says:

*tries to duplicate tongue-wrinkle feat* *gives up and squeezes mini-nose roll as compensation*

  9. Arr Arr says:

    Mmmmm. Tongue as an “m.”

  10. PhotinoBird says:

Nothing makes pugs cute. They aren’t cute. They’re as cute as a crumpled up ball of pancakes with eyes. That drool.

    • O NO He/ She/ It DI-unt!!! says:

….um….your statement here MIGHT beconsidered “an opinion, stated as fact”.

And it’s fairly likely that you’re among quite a very large group of folks who hold a distinctly different opinion. So while I’m not saying you’re wrong….in the future,
you just might want to allow some breathing room for the possibility, that your Opinion might not be the same thing, as an Established (Scientific) Fact.

IE: Cool off on the deliberate & unconstructive unpleasantness.

      • Jess says:

Thanks for sticking up for pug lovers, O NO. I understand that not everyone thinks they are cute – ie, PhotinoBird has the freedom to think they are ugly, etc. However, we would just have to agree to disagree – my pug is the cutest ever! I tend to think that it doesn’t matter if someone thinks my dog is ugly, I think he’s adorable, which is what is important. Plus, that just means there is more cute for me! :)

        • shannomo says:

Thanks Jess, I agree with you, more cute loveys for me. To me my pugs, Poe and Daisy, are the two sweetest, most adorable dogs ever! I don’t care what other say.

      • Rhea says:

I think pugs are deformed and hideous, ditto bulldogs, but that’s just my opinion. I guess they have nice personalities or something.

      • starling says:

I don’t like pugs either as a rule (probably because the only ones I know are annoying yappy farty creatures that aren’t trained to behave), but this one is cute.

    • muttluver says:

I don’t like Pugs either, but I know others here adore them, so I just let them squee and wait for one that hasn’t been bred to have…… those ok so I think it’s horrible that they bred them to have squashed noses that hamper proper breathing and wrinkles that collect moisture (it can mildew! Mildew!!) but I know other people here love them so I usually keep my mouth shut! Ooops I just opened it.

Please try to at least state in a nicer way? You’re entitled to your opinion, but people here might take offense.

      • Lifecoach says:

        I absolutely agree muttluver!

Animal breeding that favors aesthetics over health is cruel. Most people only recognize animal cruelty if it occurs after the animal is born, but it’s one and the same IMO.

Unfortunately, Pugs are also exceedingly cute. And the little noises they make when you pick them up… gah!

        • Sharpy says:

how about “animal breeding that favors aesthetics over health can lead to cruel consequences?”

if we didn’t have preferences for the way animals looked and didn’t intervene in one way or another, dogs would be pretty gnarly. if we didn’t, dogs would eventually become mexican street dogs.

          • starling says:

I call those kampong dogs. Somehow when dogs are left to breed freely, they all end up looking the same, all over the world.

          • Sharpy says:

where does the word “kampong” come from? (we take words very seriously around here.)

          • starling says:

Kampong/Kampung is the Malay/Indonesian word for little village, although you often see it used to mean shanty town.

    • Alice Shortcake says:

I don’t share your opinion of pugs, but are you perchance a fellow Stephen Baxter fan?

    • thecandiedmango says:

@PhotinoBird: what’s with the pancake hate? I love it when my pancakes get squished. :(

    • shannomo says:

You’re welcome to your opinion, but the rest of us LOVE PUGGIES!!!!!
Love the wrinkles! Love the snoring! Love the soulful eyes! Love them, love them, LOVE THEM!!!!! So there. I fell much better now.

    • AmyLynn98 says:

I don’t have a pug (yet) but I just about drop dead everytime I see one. I think they have such wonderful little faces…and the wrinkles! And the curly tail! And the beady little eyes!

      Sigh… LOVE ‘EM!

Now I want to go home and go snorfle all over my cat and German Shepherd (who, just so you all know…IS THE MOST HANDSOMEST DOG EVAR!!!!) :P

    • nismo says:

My sister loves pugs and thinks they’re the cutest. I don’t (but I don’t dislike them either). When I asked her why she thinks they’re cute, she said it’s because of the smooshed face look. OK, nothing wrong with that. Different strokes for different folks. Like me, I happen to find dogs with short, stubby, stumpy legs cute, like Corgis, Basset Hounds, and Dachshunds.

    such a serious little face!

  12. Gigi (the original one) says:

WOW! His tongue mimic the M wrinkles between his eyes!

  15. Ali-baba says:

If scritching between his head folds is wrong, I don’t want to be right! ;-)

  16. April's NaNa says:

I always scroll to find Oakley’s wit while waiting for the pictures to “load”. And I am ALWAYS rewarded for my “trouble”…always. You go girl!

  17. MamaLana says:

    Oh Oakley! BowWowTox! rotflmao

  18. ffleur says:

Pugs watch too much tv news. That is why they always look exceedingly worried.

  19. shan says:

hahaha that’s the charm of the pug, the wrinkles!! someone needs to post sharpei dogs… :)

  20. Zach says:

I am disturbed by the lack of bulldog on this site, especially when discussing wrinkles! I keep tryin’ to get some more on here!

  21. Erin says:

pug love!! we even have to help our little pug clean his “nose wrinkle” and he has cankles, too! PUGS > LIFE

    • muttluver says:

…………………………………………..DOGS SHOULD NOT BE BRED TO

Nevermind. Love the love you have for your puppeh, was my main point. (Resrie, I’m starting to talk like you.)

      • Jay says:

This breed originated in ancient China. I think you’re a little late to stop its continuation. Besides, thousands of years of survival obviously weren’t hindered by their wrinkles.

That said, cute pup! I love pugs. :D

  22. Katey says:

    Amended:

    Reasons why pugs are cute:

    1. Eye to head ratio.

    2. Comic releif.

    3. Nommable ears

    4. Personality plus.

    • Katey says:

What I mean to emphasize is: people don’t always choose pets based on their APPEARANCE. Personality is big too. After spotting a stray kitty family near my work I’ve been trolling the local Craigslist pet/lost & found pages and have been a little disturbed at the number of “I want a grey kitten” “I want an orange female kitten” etc posts. What does the appearence matter? Pick a pet for its personality!

(And in my experience pugs are charming, social, amusing and quiet dogs. They may not be as robust health wise as Newfies & such, but they’re likewise not much worse off then Mastiffs and such.)

  23. Rachael says:

I actually didn’t think my chihuahua was cute when I adopted her 8 years ago but I knew she needed (and deserved) a good home. Now I think she’s the most beautiful creature on the face of the earth. Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. ♥♥♥♥

  24. Erica says:

I love my pugs. I have a beefy 30 pounder with wrinkles galore. He does require extra maintenance to keep his wrinkles, ears and eyes clean. But he is worth it! My other one is 12 pounds and when I adopted him 8 years ago (he’s 16 now), I thought ‘oh crap, it’s one of those ugly ones’. But boy do they grow on you and now I think he’s as cute as the other one!
Pugs are funny, amusing, entertaining, and very very loving dogs. Loving unless you’re my Siberian Husky trying to eat their snacks.

  25. StormCat says:

Is it wrong for me to want to kiss the wrinkles on his forehead? *hangs head*

    • shannomo says:

No. I do it several times a day. The only thing better than puggy wrinkles is puggy neck rolls to bury your face in :)

  26. ceejoe says:

I volunteered at my county animal shelter’s open house this past weekend, and they are ALL beautiful. So there.

  30. pyrit says:

My grandparents always had pugs! Their last one, was named Pinky, because his tongue always stuck out. But it warn’t wrinkleh. More like a stick of bubble gum.

  31. .twist. says:

I’m not even joking when I say that I can do this too. It’s called making a cloverleaf with your tounge.

No I will not take a picture to compare, puppeh is wai cuter than I.

  32. Theresa says:

You wanna know what is wrong with this dog? This dog is named “Phillie.” How horrible! How could someone do that to an innocent animal?

  33. Kayla says:

I am a 23 year old crazy pug lady, how dare ye all say that pugs aren’t cute! My boys, Oliver and Sebastian, are bee-yoo-te-ful and the apples of my eye! Every animal is cute in its own little way! After Halloween a lady, without knowing my crazy pug obsession, said “Someone came up to my house with a pug dressed up as a banana split. I felt bad. Not because it was a dog in a costume, but that he was a pug.” I wanted to cry.

    • Emily says:

I agree Kayla! My pug girl Suzie is totally adorable! They’re great dogs, so loving and funny :)

People are entitled to their opinions, but we’re also entitled to disagree with them! ;)

  34. Annette says:

Love, love, love pugs. I have one with a similar tongue issue. Too cute!

  35. Michelle says:

Emily, I have Pug too, named Ike. I would’ve named him Phillie- so clever! Me and my fam LOVE the Phils too.

  36. shelby says:

oh ‘rinkle’rinkle pugness how you seduce me. i luv my puggies to death. i keep saying that i won’t get any more (on account of being on a first name basis with the vent and emergency treatment center staff, and the shedding is sumpin’ to behold). i think i may be telling tails – er tales – and about the never again . . . .

  37. Lana says:

As a pug convert, I have to say I squeal just a little each time I see my two pugs, who are both little comedians, and happen to be the best companions ever.
And I used to hate pugs, thought they were little mutants. And they ARE little mutants, but they are the best little mutants!
