Maru Pours Himself Into a Box

Maru should really lighten up on the deep-fried mice:

Enjoy ALL the Maru action over on his YouTubes Channel. Thanks to Ant for another Quality Foraged Link.

  1. I hate to tell you this, Maru, but you’re not a tiny kitten anymore.

  2. Oh Maru – how we love you.. but Yes, that box makes your tush look big

  3. Oh *Maru*. We do love you, you silly boy.

  4. I love love love the way Maru is trying to dig into the bottom of the box to make more room.

  5. Silent Meow says:

Maru…um…I think u might need a bigger box.

  6. This is your brain. This is your brain on box addiction.

Please, if your kitteh suffers from teh box addiction, send him or her to boxhab.

  7. Oh please don’t judge. Who among us hasn’t done this with a pair of jeans at least once in our lives. 😉

  8. DisgruntledFerret says:

Oh you doofus cat, what do you think you’re doing XD

  9. I just saw Maru on a Fresh Step commercial playing on Animal Planet. I sure hope his mom got good $$$ for it!

  10. Liz the Librarian says:

We’re gonna need a bigger box.

  11. Love the butt overflow at 1:38.

  12. Muffin-top Maru

  13. LILLITH! You made my day with your comment!!! Ah, yes…been there and done that with my jeans. That was great! And so is Maru…

  14. dancingfiend says:

“Yo Maru’s so fat, when he sits around the box, he sits AROUND the box!”

  15. Silly Maru. You’re too much of a behemoth to fit in such a small box.

  16. Stunbunny says:

Like a furry muffin in an Altoids tin.

  17. I give you all the toys money can buy and all you want is the box!!!

  18. earlybird1 says:

LOL @Lillith! That was a good one!!

Maru’s gonna wake up with one heck of a krink in his neck…

  19. That awful pair of wonderful jeans that never zipper up no matter how much you lay on the bed to get them zipped. Bigger size now but those jeans are still in the closet. This is the cats adventure of womens clothing hell. haha.

  20. Stunbunny made me lol.

You have to respect his determination and eventual success despite the inital overflow of his Maru-ness in said tiny box. I think I even detected some purr action near the end.

He was kind of like a super-determined-reverse-birth baby.

  21. Nicolletta says:

    Proof that you can’t stuff a 20-pound cat into a 5-pound box.

  22. Muffin-top Maru 😀 ❤

  23. Just saw a commercial for Kitty Litter showing clips of Maru! I squeeled and rewound it so everybody could watch it. Made my weekend!

  24. (gigglesnort) I love how he’s sitting on air half the time because the box rims won’t accommodate his voluminous booty…he is in blissful denial near the end, “see, I fit!”

  25. aahh. MY Caturday is complete. Plus, that’s how I’m going to look after The Big Thanksgiving Meal, this weekend. (Canadian Thanksgiving 🙂 )

  26. Anybody else notice that box changes? Look at the box at the beginning of the video and then again at the middle through end of the video, it’s a much deeper box.

  27. Elaine and Lisa Ann – I was coming here to comment too that I saw the kitty litter commercial with Maru on Animal Planet.

It’s kind of funny to watch TV and be like “Hey, I know that cat!!!”

  28. leaves of cat grass says:

    so comfortabuhls!!!!!

  29. You do know that’s the *back* foot sticking out by his face at the end there.

  30. The telltale tail flicking. Maru knows this isn’t going to work, but he’s still going to give it his all. Love you, Lil (big) Guy!

  31. they just don’t make boxes like they used to…

  32. I’m thinking he could make some big bucks in the next Jenny Craig or Nutrisystem commercial.

  33. According to Maru’s blog, Maru’s owner gave Fresh Step her/his permission beforehand.

  34. victoreia says:

I love the expression on his face at about 1:19: “This isn’t working. Why isn’t it working?”

  35. Maru would happily stuff himself into a thimble if the opportunity presented itself! Oh how I love this cat. 🙂

  36. Queen of Dork says:

I like the part in the end which displays Maru’s blobbularity hanging out of his little box. *sigh* I wish Maru’s people would adopt me so I could live in The Land of Really Sparkling Clean and hang out in boxes with Maru. Wouldn’t that be dreamy?

  37. muppet2171 says:

They tried to make me go to box-hab, I said no, no, no!

  38. Queen of Dork says:

Liz the Librarian: I like the Jaws reference you did there! 🙂

  39. speedwell says:

I haven’t laughed so hard or loud in MONTHS. This right here, THIS, is the reason I come to this site. I wish upon a star that I could get a poster of the last scene just before it cuts to the end credit…

  40. “Like YOU have any right to judge me!” @ 1:18 xD

  41. I so love that flicking tail: grrrrrrrr. I love you, Maru!

  42. flutterby says:

    Ahhhh….Caturday now complete!

Thank you Meg, queen of all that is cute!!!

  43. O NO He/She/It DI-unt!!! says:

…I’m arriving quite late, to this Saturday night MaruFest.

    Liz the Librarian (YAY Librariologists!!)
used the line that I would have chosen to use. YAY Maru, YAY Maru’s human and YAY Liz the Librarian.

However, those declarations made, I add the following:

ditto both Nikki and QoD !!!

  44. Copperbat says:

    yoga comment=win

QoD: I know, right? That would be heaven!

  45. O NO He/She/It DI-unt!!! says:

    (PS: “deep-fried Mice”/ “deep-fried Rice” = 🙂 )

  46. @QoD

    i want to go there.

  47. This totally made me laugh! Mainly because my own cats do this…what’s up with cats and boxes? And…like some of you, I’ve noticed Maru on the Fresh Step ads, too! Lucky cat just keeps getting more popular! We love you, Maru! 🙂

  48. Queen of Dork says:

Sharpy: Maybe they offer some sort of package deal or time share or something. There must be something. My God, love! I must shower and step (with clean, bare feet and freshly washed and hanging on the clothes line with wooden clothes hanger things, fluffed, blindingly white, smelling like a summer breeze-dried-by-the-wind-and-air-stirred-up-by-brightly-colored-and-jubiliant-butterflies-flapping-merrily-about-my-clothes-line terry cloth bathrobe) into this Land of Pristine. 🙂

  49. @QoD

i’ll require a terra cotta patio with wisteria (or bougainvillea, i guess), a slight breeze scented with eucalyptus, muslin panels in either raw cotton color or red and orange, mourning doves, wind chimes made of sea glass, and yes, completely dream-sized puffy armchairs, chaise lounges, pillows, hammocks, twinkling lamps at night and a baby monkey riding on a pig… oops, i mean MARU!

  50. @amikit

i hope she gave them an address for the check!

  51. Queen of Dork says:

    Sharpy: And Tiki torches!

  52. 😆 Oh, Maru 😆 You trying to stuff yourself into that box reminds me of when our kitty, Badger, tried to stuff herself into an empty Kleenex box 😆

  53. He needs a space bag to stuff him in!!! Dang that floor is clean….shiny! No dust bunnies anywhere.

  54. Mary (the first) says:

Yes, with nothing more interesting to say I will just say I, too, love Maru and his determination to get into the box and the blobbularity and the eventual success! And would also love to live in that shiny clean place with Maru! And a box!

  55. Maru says, “What is your probs? I totally fits!”

  56. I have a mental image of a cube-shaped Maru once he’s removed from the box. 🙂 Also recognized him immediately on the Fresh Step commercial. What a celebrity he is!

  57. KittyMarthaPoo says:

I too just saw Maru last night on the Fresh Step commercial!!

Maru is just the greatest. He’s so chunky & furry & he always looks a little crabby. His butt hanging out the back of the box is the best.

  58. Queen of Dork says:

Scientific Experiment no. 4.1 and 1/2 x 7.000b: I have a box in my garage that my TV came in. I shall now try to imitate the joy of Maru and see if I can squash myself into it. (and actually be comfortable). *removes any jewelry that might catch on things, rolls up sleeves and marches with determination into the garage*

  59. Maru is blobtacular.

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving to all the CO friends in Canada! 🙂 🙂 🙂

  60. Theresa (yes that Theresa) says:

“Fried Mice”? I thought that was Chinese!

Theresa (in DC for the weekend)

  61. I love how Maru marches straight into the box without hesitation at the beginning of the video – almost as if he was the actor and the director said “Action!”

  62. warrior rabbit says:

    Results, QoD?

  63. Priceless. I love when he finally gets into the box and then sits and glares at the camera as if to say: “I can still wear the box I slept in when I was in high school. Don’t question me.”

  64. Queen of Dork says:

warrior rabbit: I managed to fall asleep in the box for appx 23 minutes. (and 7 seconds). I woke up (or came to) and limped into the livingroom. After about 5 minutes, I began to experience that pins and needles feeling in my extremeties so I felt certain that the blood was beginning to flow and I would once again have feeling in those areas. Currently, I think my blood pressure is back up from something like 40/50 and I can walk again. I looked in the mirror and I swear I saw more grey hair. Bottom line: Please leave sleeping in small boxes to cats. They are physically equipped for that and I don’t think humans are. At least I’m not.

    *crawls away. waves to Theresa*

  65. Loving
    1) the “yeah, whatcha looking at?” glare at about 1:18,
    2) the whole “A box! I need to get into the box! Yay, I’m in the box! … What now?”-ness of it all, and
    3) how this video once again illustrates the fact that cats, in fact, are a form of liquid.

  66. Maru’s Mom is a meanie. She knew that Maru would be compelled to get into that box. All she had to do was aim the camera and wait. His disapproval at the end is frigid: “How could you do this to me?”

  67. I know the feeling Maru. It’s like me trying to get into my winter jeans lol 🙂

  68. @mie–

I think cats might actually be part Silly Putty, which may or may not be a liquid and a solid all at the same time . . . . . Regardless, Maru obviously needs a bigger plastic egg.

  69. Arachnophile says:

My love for Maru knows no bounds. XD

I submit the following cartoon of Catface and his Box-addicted flat-mate:

  70. Queen of Dork says:

Totally unrelated thread grab question! (he-he) How many wells are there in a standard ice-cube tray? (ha-ha! Made you open your freezer door and look!) Hahahaha! (I only thought of this question because I wondered about it myself). Anyway, back to cute animals….

  71. Reminds me of some folks I’ve seen in airplane seats.

  72. 1:38, lol. poured flubbulence!

  73. Maru is jones’in for a box but is not particularly comfortabules.

  74. Haha. I was wondering how long it would take to get on here! 😉

  75. Cholmondeley says:

Maru isn’t fat, he’s just Big Boned. Yeah, that’s it.

  76. *sigh* Young kittehs today look up to celebri-cats like Maru, and when they see him using boxes, think it’s so cool. So we continue to see more and more young, sweet, innocent kittehs corrupted and winding up in boxhab. It’s so sad…

    But lookit his CHUB!!!

  77. maru is the Keef Richards of the boxhab set

  78. Threadjack: Did anyone see the Winston video they used on Red Eye on Fox News the other night? If I remember right, his owner was feeding him watermelon! I was doing my dishes, looked up and OMGosh! I know that kitty!!! 🙂

  79. I love 1:43 ish… Maru has a muffin top going on. Some just don’t understand you have to buy the size you are :>)
@Elaine, I saw that commercial too. I sat up and said, “hey, that’s Maru!”.
I sure hope his ‘person’ was paid too.

  80. @ Elaine.. I saw that commercial and just like mplsdeb did I said ” Maru!”
    Maru is a star! 🙂

  81. Martha in Washington (but right now in Kentucky) says:

My sister and I were watching tv the other night and saw the Fresh Step commercial and both said “Hey, it’s Maru!” at the same time.

  82. Anonymous says:

Anyone have a link to an online video of the Maru Fresh Step commercial?

  83. Blubbulicious! Maru makes me happy when I am sad. I have a lot to be sad about lately…. 😦 But Maru always makes me feel better! 😀

Also, is it bad that I really want to boop that little black spot on his nose? Like really really REALLY badly…and touch his floof. I feel creepy…

  84. Maru, thank you for making me feel so relaxed. You take all my anxieties away with your adorableness.

  85. O NO He/She/It DI-unt!!! says:

@ Star: to the best of (my?) estimation, I sense no creepiness in ya!
And my sympathies/ rainbow glitter, to apply toward multiple sadness thinggies.

    Hope that is
of *SOME* assistance (Please pronounce the word “assistance” in an Inspecteur Clouseau accent. Thank you.)

  86. it’s one of those ‘either’ ‘or’ boxes. either your head or your tail…either your hind leg or you front paw….either all your legs or your flab… either you sit in it or drape over it…

  87. I saw that Fresh Step commercial this morning. I gotta say, I wouldn’t have even noticed – let alone remembered – that Fresh Step commercial if Maru hadn’t been in it.

  88. @Star: if having an urge to beep the black spot is bad&creepy, well I’m bad&creepy right with you!
Also: lotsa hugs & I hope whatever is making you sad goes away soon!!

and @CathyDee re: Silly Putty, you might be right. I have to inspect the matter further. If only I had a cat…

  89. I love the tail switching back and forth! “This box fit PERFECTLY just last weekend! I don’t get it!”

  90. I can make eet bigger wif my paws!!!!

  91. Oh Maru. Your love of boxes knows no bounds. My love for you is too big to fit into that box too.

  92. Who owns Maru?
Why has he got so many entries when my hilarious cat pictures never get a look in?
    (weeps bucket of tears!)

  93. nolalola27 says:

I love him, but is he getting a little (bracing myself here) fat?

::dodges tomatoes & cabbages hurled at head::

I know, I know, obviously he’s a well-loved and happy kitty, but I worry he may be a little too..fluffy?

  94. Lewis n' Clark says:

…and aren’t his ‘Tocks perfect for Tocktober?

  95. Boxhab. Bad case.

  96. Boxhab. seriously. And BTW, how did we get from the topic of Maru + boxes, to really clean floors, to ‘Tocktober? xD

  97. O NO He/She/It DI-unt!!! says:

…um….comment is (allegedly) written BY Maru?

  98. Shouldn’t that be tempura mice?

  99. He’d would like to know why they are filming when they could be GETTING A BIGGER BOX.

  100. @Saffron 😀 Thank you 😀 We had a Happy Canadian Thanksgiving too 😀

  101. Can someone tell me who owns Maru and why he is given so many entries on Cute Overload?

  102. O NO, would that be pronounced, “ah-see-stahnce?” 😀

  103. I had an experience at the post office today that was much like this, except with an envelope and a far-too-large item. I’m sure I looked just as unimpressed too.

And…as I was watching this, I realised my cat was sitting up on my lap, completely transfixed too. She never really pays attention to anything on screen, but Maru got her attention all the way to the end. Ooh la la!

  104. Readerlady says:

I know this is a late entry, but I’m reminded of a poem from my favorite poetry book, “This Big Cat” by Beatrice Schenk de Regniers. (I don’t like poetry, but this one is about cats.)
“…Now he’s old and big and fat
but no one’s ever told him that
    he can no longer fit
    inside of it
    and so he tries…”

  105. Ah, Maru, who among us can resist tempura? Even, ah, tempura meeses?

  106. Can someone tell me who owns Maru and why he is given so many entries on Cute Overload?

Max-Arthur the snowshoe cat in a small box:
