It’s not enough for a mama cat to take in what would normally be dinner, but she teaches it to purr, too! For the rest of the story, we take you to the Cute Overload Eyewitness Action News Update Central Command Center Headquarters!
That second language looks good on a résumé, Katherine P.

Learning another language is very important. Next week, they’ll let it play with puppehs
Squirrel sez: score! I’m in with the fat cats.
Super cute and all, but how high was this tree? Maybe a ladder or something could have helped? New life is great and all but my heart aches slightly for the mama squirrel
The purring! So cute, what an amazing trait. I have to say I love listening to that man’s Mississippi accent too!
Squirrel is obviously purrplexed.
WhoA!
Reminds me of old joke. Mama mouse and baby mouse are confronted by cat. Mama mouse puffs herself up and says “WOOFWOOFWOOFWOOF!” Cat scrams. Mama mouse looks at baby mouse, and tells him “Son, now you see the advantages of a second language.”
Deana, I intended to post this video so you could listen to the voice of the Texas Country Reporter, but the content is CO-worthy itself. Meet Skidboot:
@brinnann
“you wanna concentrate on the shoe-in’, not the fightin’.”
how many times did i tear up at that video?
TOO MANY!
Yes, please update us on Rocky the squirrel in a year. Bless all those who adopt orphans, both human and kitty. Love it.
Skidboot, you are the best dog evah!!
Awwwww!!! Kitteh & babeh skwerrel and Skidboot & his hooman = a whole lotta cute!!!!!
i love how bebe squirrel is all “git out of my way, move, people move! there are cat boobs that need kneading and milk to be drunk!!!” tunnelling under his new siblings.
When I was young we got a baby Mallard duck around the time our cat had kittens. The duck imprinted with the kittens. They all grew up together and the duck was terrified of water.
wow at the skwirrel-ten and the duckkitten that was terrified of water (Vicki W)!!
vewwy fascinating animal aspects today!!!
Well gosh, Mississippi news sure looks dull.
The most amazing thing is that those nice people have 18 cats and they appear to be married (the people, not the cats). I think it’s just magical that they found each other as most, shall we say, crazy cat people, are single.
V. V. sweet.
Well, now, Decca, no – Mississippi news is NOT dull. However, we do like to listen to fun stuff every now and then, what with the BP oil spill messing up our beaches and people still having to deal with Katrina’s aftermath 5 years later (New Orleans not withstanding, two of our towns were completely wiped off the map….). If it’s all the same to you, we LIKE having Walt Grayson tell us in his sweet way about lovely things like this. So stop your ’nuffing, please.
OMG Brinn thanks for Sharing Skidboot he needs his own CO post for sure..
what an amazing dog.. and his human is so gentle and sweet… the perfect pair.
Wipes tears from eyes. Good thing I waited to watch this at home!
squirrels purr with or without prior training by cats, i’ve witnessed this first hand. raccoons do too.
Very cute but just in case these folks see our comments, i did have a co-worker who hand raised a baby skwerl. It grew up just as “tame” as this one but gradually they let it out to head for the trees and eventually it did move back into the wild on his own. So, it’s not necessarily not able to survive on its own. It’s not as if skwerls “hunt” or something. They just “gather”. (Don’t they?)
OMG and now I watched Skidboot and am all teary-eyed. I think David had me at “all I do is have a driver’s license”. snf
WOOOOWWWW!
The world will be a lesser place when Skidboot passes away.
@Rachael, the description under the YT video says he passed away in 2007. Sniff.
Perfect Ghostbusters reference in the hovertext, NTMTOM!
Uh, I’ll adopt the purring squirrel. You know, if you guys don’t want it.
Just saying.
I agree with gs, that sounds more like glirine bruxing/tooth grinding than feline purring… if the squirrel starts meowing, I’ll be impressed ;D Nonetheless… SQUEEGLE!!!!!
Baby squirrels purr like little motorboats. It isn’t bruxing, it is flat out purring, just like a cat.
Skidboot was an amazing dog. I got to see him a few years ago on Oprah! He has, however, crossed the bridge, and I can’t even imagine how hard it was on his dad, who clearly both loved and was properly amazed by him.
Almost as good as mama cat who adopted baby bun…almost. Needs a kitten and baby squirrel shot that with the “awwwww…” caption.
omg that guy david with his dawg skidboot! i laughed. i cried. i cried some more! awww!!!
baby squirrel is cute, but i bet one day he’ll go back to the wild based on what i’ve heard from wildlife rehabbers.
Awww! And Skidboot! Wow! And his “person”…now THAT’s a true cowboy!
To be sure the squirrel is super-cute, but you Walt is thinking,”Really? Is this what’s it’s come to? I used to be the weatherman and then they had to go and hire that %^$!!! certified meteorologist! Now look at me – reporting on a freakin’ squirrel that purrs!! These are supposed to be my golden years – yeah right!!!!”
I’ve mentioned before that a cat’s purr is my favorite sound, but to hear a squirrel make it, is just…well, leave it to CO and it’s resourceful sender-inners to constantly make me squee. The couple is obvy made for each other, they both love the furries. The one thing that is missing is a resQte tag, methinks.
BTW, brinnann, thanks for posting Skidboot. He and his cowboy daddy left a permanent mark on my heart some years ago. If the world were full of people like him, and this animal-rescuing couple, and all of you CO peeps, it’d be indescribably swell.
It’s a Mississippi Skwerl Revival!
I bet the Squirell annoys the others by not sleeping 18 hours out of 24
Adorable!!! Love the nomming on the kitteh legs
I think David Hartwig has a real gift, and not a mean bone in his body. He and Skidboot made such a good team. OK, I’m not welling up at work…no really, I’m not!!!
1. It’s a female squirrel, not a male.
2. The mom would have come to retrieve the baby if given the chance and she were alive. Instructions here.
3. While squirrels can make a purring sound, that was a “feed me!” sound.
4. If they were to give the baby to a wildlife rehabilitator now, it could be released back to the wild.
5. It’s illegal to keep wildlife without a permit.
It was still a very cute video.
I saw this story on the celebrity blog http://www.genosworld.blogspot.com a few days ago. (Apparently the squirrel is now a celebrity!)
Once again, animals show us how to behave in accepting differences.
The squirrie seems to need a great deal less honk-shue that its adoptive feline siblings They may never understand its bizarre desire for nuts and fruits… that is, if, hopefully, it never cares for meat.
@Rachel and those loving Skidboot: He passed away in 2007. His owner still works with dogs (offspring of Skidboot’s brother if I remember correctly) making appearances at local events, etc. He’s also a farrier. What a wonderful soul to work with animals
@megan
you know, i grew up around horses. last year a friend asked me to her farrier (is that a verb?) her horses last year, i totally failed. i was way too nervous and when the horse bolted i nearly jumped out of my skin. it is HARD to keep a horse calm and it takes a very special soul to love and care for a horses hooves! the way skidboot’s dad was with that horse was remarkable and i admire anyone who can manage it.
Sounds like inspiration for a Disney film…
Those are amazing and caring people to help out those animals and give them a loving home
