THIS JUST IN: Thing One & Thing Two

Here’s jubilant news from the Prospect Park Zoo:
Baboon baby birth, and not just one, but two!
They’ve each got a mommy, both rambunctious males,
So feisty they’ve got to be held by their tails.

So while the boys wrassle and play baboon games,
The Zoo asks the public to help give them names.
At the moment, they just call the kids “one” and “two,”
But that’s no good, peeps, so you know what to do.

HD available in video. More news, video at Gawker.

UPDATE: New! Improved! Now with 82% more Jamin!

  1. OMG! We have GOT to start building human babies with tails!
“Stop pulling on your brother’s hair” WHONK.
    “No cookies right now.” WHONK.
“Get out of my purse.” WHONK.
“No, the fork does not go in the light socket.” WHONK.
    This could revolutionize day care!

  2. These baboons babies
    are such precocious fellows.
    Perhaps they have rabies?
    Go with Abbot and Costello.

  3. Jacob and Esau.

  4. I object to anything with a baby baboon but without Jamin.

  5. GAAAAH! Why didn’t that work?
    Trying again

  6. Not That Mike The Other Mike says:

Corianne: I fixed your link, and added more Jamin!

  7. I love that the mothers hold the babies by the tail. It’s a built-in leash!

  8. Very convenient handle!

  9. What mother WOULDN’T want a baby with a tail??? I love it!!! ROFL

  10. biscuithead says:

    Rock me *Hamadryas!

*(yes, that’s a type of baboon)

    oh never mind.

  11. fatgrammafinn says:

i wish my kids had had built in handles, i wonder if baboon moms tell their kids if they don’t behave in the store for the NICE gramma, they have to stay behind at home with the GRUMPY gramma!

    @biscuithead… *snerk*

  12. lunacydress says:

The scuffle at 1:16 is the best!

  13. Such infinite patience displayed by the mommies. Very matter-of-fact, cool disciplinarians. I’d like to take lessons.

  14. But..but…but… where’s the remaining 18 % of Jamin???? O.O

  15. Scarleybelle says:

Very sweet! I like how the baboon Moms are like,
“So I was telling Tillie” [whonk, yanks kid by tai-li-o] “…that if we get a cut from the naming contest video sales [tug, tug]… we could start our own pre-school–Tug Tail Nursery!”
“Oh, fantastic idea, Anna!” [grasp, hold] “But how will we pick a good pair of names from all the Cute Overload entries?” [clamp, pull]
“Ellie, I know!” [grasp, grip] “We could sell Jamin videos! We’d make piles! Enough to develop our own chain!”

  16. Biologists have proved that baboons are a cross between humans and dogs. That’s why we’re so attracted to ’em.

  17. Queen of Dork says:

Oh wow. Jamin again? Well, to me he seems like a guy who has nice features and all but I find his friend to be cuter. There was recently an article about a primate of some sort who had adopted a marmie. (Theo? Was that you? In a disguise of some kind?) Has anyone seen that? I can’t find it now. Anyway, I think Jamin is pleasantly structured and all, but goodness… don’t know. I guess he’s alright looking. (No offense, Jamin). I guess I just don’t get the hoopla about this guy.

  18. BaronKuku says:

Jamin just spanked his monkey and now it needs a nap.

  19. Agreed: tails are such useful handles! LOL

  20. Phssst (disapproving marmie noise). I thought 82% meant Jamin in a swimsuit.
And I think QoD the hoopla is because hot nice guys are few and far between on the interwebz: when nice guys cuddle helpless animals, this causes a rapid biochemical reaction in observers [head-tilt Awwwww’s followed by a ‘Hubba Hubba’], escalating the resultant hotness scores logarithmically.
This is distinct from yet similar to the reaction to a typical ‘cats’n’racks’ shot, which is either a Mrs. Reverend Putty’s ‘Hmph! Think of the children!’ or a Roger Rabbitesque ‘aOOOOOGah!’
    QED and QCOD.

  21. Queen of Dork says:

hirish: Oh. Well, I guess then that’s what it is. I guess he’s okay looking and hopefully a nice person. Me myself? Gary Sinise. (yum). Are there any pictures of him cuddling a hamster, monkey, kitten, puppy, me, hedgehog, pig, platypus, penguin, rat, (oops! what the….?!…How did that “me” thing slip in there?

  22. 1) Prospect Park Zoo: These guys are my neighbors! YAY!

    2) I love how she grabs the tail and reels him back in when he starts to wander off. “Oh, just where do you think you’re going, Mister?”

    3) Baby baboon, it’s a baby baboon
    It’s a baby baboon, a baboon with a spoon,
It’s a baby baboon, a baboon on the moon,
It’s a baby baboon and he’s playing the bassoon,
Baby baboon, baby baboon, baby baboon!

  23. Queen of Dork says:

Hi Theresa: What about the Bronx Zoo? Is there really such a place? I lived in Manhattan (164th between Broadway and Ft. Washington) for three years and heard about, but never actually saw, The Bronx Zoo. Is that a true place? I guess it’s kind of like someone visiting D.C. and failing to go to The Smithsonian or Georgetown. 🙂

  24. Balderdash and Folderol! Know what I mean? Neither do I!

  25. Queen of Dork says:

pyrit: Yes, I know what you mean. Like, confounded and dagnabbit and boil me over, and why-I-oughta and for the love of Mike, and confuze and confuzzle and dangit and hiiisssssss and growwwwwwwlll, and (spit) and things like that.

*goes to bathroom to suck on a bar of soap*

  26. that male baboon is totally stuck in the 80’s with that crimped hair.

  27. Cute! And the baby baboon isn’t bad either 😉

  28. @QoD, yes, sweetie! Take the No. 2 or 5 train to E. 180 Street, Bronx. Oh well, next time!

So you lived in the Heights, right by the hospital.

  29. Those baby baboons have the most amazing faces and ears! And I just love the casualness with which the moms yank on the tails. So adorable.

  30. Billy and bobby Bluebum.

  31. baileysgrandmom says:

Hey, Q of D, in re “confounded and dagnabbit and boil me over,” by any chance did you mean “bowl me over?” It’s MUCH less painful! OK, OK, I’ll sneak back into my quiet corner now and watch the bebehs video again.

  32. Oh! New York baboons? Brooklyn!?
    Weisenheimer and Goombah.

    DKN, c’mon.

  33. Queen of Dork says:

baileysgrandmom: Yeah! Oops! That is what I meant! Thanks and my bad! 🙂

  34. wow. they’re really adorable.

  35. Queen of Dork says:

Theresa: Yes. My mom worked as a nurse at Columbia. I recall that the building where M. X was shot was right there as well, all shuttered away and just sitting there. Also, the Hudson was just nearby as well. My sister and I used to go and sit on this huge boulder on the shore there which we called, “The Rock.” We used to walk over the G.W. Bridge to Jersey. I’m not remembering all of those trains you’re talking about but I know I used to take the blue “A” train downtown when I needed to go there. My Heavens! How I miss New York!!!!! Theresa: Please breathe in the air there and say hello to a stranger on the street for me!

  36. Oh but kids do come with a tail in a way.
When I went to convent school as a little girl the sisters would often grab my pony tail and give it a tug to stop me talking when we were line-up waiting to go in after recess, didn’t work on me and I bet it won’t work on the little fellows LOL!

  37. I said Rod [as in Roddy McDowell, star of Planet of the Baboons; if you go to the contest, the one on the right in the first photo even looks like him], and Todd [for the Simpsons!]

  38. carol rose says:

If one were a girl, I think Fanny would be a good name — because they have such cute pink ones!

  39. Something tells me it’s all happening at the zoo.
I do believe it. I do believe it’s true.

  40. @QoD

oh great, now i’m pining for the city and i’ve never even lived there.

    the cloisters.

    secret happy land.

  41. @baileysgrandmom

have you read The Poisonwood Bible? barbara kingsolver uses a ton of those great malapropisms. my favorite so far is “for all the teeth in china.”

  42. @baronkuku

…that’s some pretty thin ice you’re over there…

  43. @QoD

    i was with you.

then i sat and studied his photo.

i mean i really looked at the picture.

    a lot.

    then it all became clear.

  44. I really don’t care that much about the baboons, yeah, they’re cute and all but thank you so VERY much for another look at Jamin. Thank you, thank you, thank………………………………………………………………….!

  45. Queen of Dork says:

Well, Sharpy, I still prefer the part of the picture that’s further down on his body. I mean in his lap, the little thing in his lap. I mean, the monkey on his lap. No! I mean the little, furry cute lap monkey! Gaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

    (runs away)

  46. kibblenibble says:

So much to love about this video. The wrassling monkey babies, the casual mamas hanging onto the tails. Made me giggle more than once. Just a random thought: You know how some folks comment that they’d love rats more without their odd tails? Well I kinda feel that way about baboons. I know the redness is natural for them, but I find it a tad off-putting. Not enough to keep me from enjoying the Qteness, though. 🙂

  47. girlnextdoortn says:

    Jamin makes everything better.

  48. The Invisible Grammarian says:

@NTMTOM, you know I love you, but I had to reread a couple times “They’ve each got a mommy, both rambunctious males” because that sentence says their mommies are males which, even for baboons, isn’t typically the way it works.

  49. Ibe been watching a lot of Pyhron lately, how about Biggles and Bamber?

  50. At Sharpei!
    Fist-bump for the clearly COXJCU

  51. PS: he must be Jamin, ‘cuz jelly don’t roll like dat.

  52. ana paula says:

    Jamin… *sighs*

  53. Yeh BWOY! Jamin is definitely still overloaded on the qte.

  54. AHHHH! I can’t take it! 2 gorgeous specimens of male beauty! first the hunky monkey who appears around the :18 sec mark in the vid, and then a repeat of Jamin??? I CAN’T TAKE IT!

  55. the Jamin thing is really cracking me up! Will we ever find Jamin? Will he ever know what he has become?!

  56. @hirish

    i know! am i right?

  57. Queen of Dork – no offense, but could you get your friends’ emails and communicate with them privately? This is a website where we discuss cute animals – it is not your personal facebook page. Please don’t hijack this site for communications with your friends/acquaintances. Thanks!

  58. @kate

    >>the Jamin thing is really cracking me up! Will we ever find Jamin? Will he ever know what he has become?!

personallly, i’m getting a little freaked out by all the calls and letters. he just doesn’t seem to take a hint. jamin, i like you as a friend. but that’s it!

  59. Felicityanne says:

@Swelahc: lay off QOD! I’m sure I’m not the only one who finds the exchanges more entertaining than nuffers or repeated endless ‘squee!’-type comments, or those that repeat earlier points because their authors haven’t bothered to read anyone else’s contributions!

  60. Felicityanne says:

Goodness, what could possibly be the keyword that has sent my previous comment to moderation?!

  61. so cute the video but CO should include at least one a week a dose of Jamin 😀 its just perfect

  62. Jamin should have his own tag on the site :-D.

  63. bookmonstercats says:

When my two were toddlers, I used to dress them in dungarees with a bib and braces. If they were acting up, or where they shouldn’t have been, I used to pick them up and out of danger using the braces. Crossed over, the braces were much stronger and I wouldn’t be thanked by a juvenile kick for my pains. Aah, those were the days…

  64. Queen of Dork… it’s the face, it draws you in like a black hole -only positive in Jamin’s case.. *sighs and takes another look at Jamin in a totally non-creepy-stalkerish kinda way*

  65. LOL! JAMIN, again? I’m thinking he had to be getting older by now.
@Queen of Dork- LOL….Yeah….you know what you meant! ;P
@Swelahc- I’ve met some of the most wonderful peeps ever on CO. I think your comment was rude. If you don’t want to read what a person posts, you can skim over it- Right?!

  66. Felicityanne says:

@Swelahc: I agree with Carlisa about Queen of Dork: I’m sure I’m not the only one who finds the exchanges more entertaining than nuffers or repeated endless ‘squee!’-type comments, or those that repeat earlier points because their authors haven’t bothered to read anyone else’s contributions!

  67. Felicityanne says:

OK, I tried to guess what the keyword was…and I was wrong. I also don’t know if when a comment is ‘awaiting moderation’ the author is the only one who can see it onscreen, so this and my earlier ramblings may make no sense at all!

  68. Felicityanne says:

I wonder if the keyword is ’nuffers’?

  69. Felicityanne says:

Yes! Yes it is! I know the keyword!

  70. @Swelahc, this is a website where there are some people who frequent, coo over the Qte, and exchange friendly greetings and pleasantries with others, similarly drawn by the Qte. Part of the delightful-ness of CO is the friendliness engendered by the Qte. I was extremely offended by the officious tone of your posting, which was definitely anti-Qte.

  71. Did you know there is a song about Jamin? 😛

  72. Queen of Dork says:

Dictator swelahc: Huh? What the heck are you talking about? I’m kind of cracking up right now at your comment to me. Could I please have YOUR e-mail address? I would LOVE to talk to you there! 🙂

  73. hirish, the concept of “Jamin in a swimsuit” forced me to lie down in a darkened room for a while with a cold compress on my… forehead.

  74. O NO He/She/It DI-unt!!! says:

    ….@ Swelehac:

    ….also (no offense but)
you might not be aware of this so I’ll run it by ya. Q is a phenomenally fun and kind human, with feelings, whose comments are very popular with many other CO regulars. I imagine you have feelings, too …. but your “request” is fairly out of line.

CO has moderators, WHOSE JOB it is, to remove comments which are unseemly or which cause any perceived harm to the site or to other commenters. So …
    mellow the harsh, ‘K?

  75. O NO He/She/It DI-unt!!! says:

(PS: I didn’t take the time to scroll up to ck exact spelling of the screenname
and then back down to compose my note sorry if misspelled, that truly
    wasn’t intentional)

  76. O NO He/She/It DI-unt!!! says:

@ Rhea: hope your ….”forehead” is better now.

(*Decides to use “forehead” as a euphemism for ….that other word…
for the rest of my “borned- days”!!)

  77. luvstehQte says:

Oooooooh, Suess-ian poetry, bebeh baboons (and friends!), and xxx-tra Jamin! This post really has it all (and I second Rhea’s need for a cold compress…)!! Plus a little ’nuff-in’ and such in the comments 🙂

  78. fatgrammafinn says:

@all of you… as a gramma to 7, auntygramma to 1, wife to 1, sister to 1, coworker to 17, acquaintance to quite a few, friend to almost 0, as i have a couple of crippling social phobias, AND as i can’t leave the house without wearing some sort of skull thingie, AND as i do most of my christmas shopping from the Archie Mcphee catalog, AND am opinionated, snarly, and as my husband says “she doesn’t MIND working back in the post office, it’s all those pesky customers”, i try try try to live up to the 2nd rule of zen lynne in lacey version, “yes , you are entitled to your opinion, but the best part of being an adult is keeping it to yourself if it might possibly bring a tear to the eye and a quiver to the chin of the person you wish to inflict it on”. also known as the thumper rule.

i haven’t been doing CO very long, but i like to think that youse guys are, at least, acquaintances, and thank you for that

sermon over *passes collection basket, announces that “the toxic avenger” will be playing on the basement bigscreen starting at 2 p.m., BYOP&P*

  79. fatgrammafinn says:

oh, i forgot to comment on the picture

they should call them unit and package

  80. It`s almost bedtime here in Hannover and I just wanted a quick “good-night-peek” at Cuteoverload. And what did I get ? Jarmin again. Now I`m sitting here, AGAIN, drooling on my keyboard, AGAIN, and I might just as well stay put, since when can a woman get peaceful sleep with Jarmin on her mind ?
Yeah, go ahead, call me a whiner. 😉

  81. O.k., so it`s Jamin without the “r”…*sigh*

  82. I love handles. It’s like the ‘leashes, or whatever you call them we use on our kids.

to Belinda..Yes…the baboons are the only cuties 🙂

    As for names…NYC

  83. Not that the babymonkeh isn aDORaBEL, but can I have that guy?!?

o….and exactly what goes through my mind when I see Jamin….drool…NObody should be permitted to be that good looking…

  87. @ mplsdeb, you rock on names. lol

ok, yes Jamin is a dollface (jamin, where are you?), but for baboon names, how about:
Bite Me for #1, and Bite You for #2

  88. Somebody needs to tell this Jamin that he is famous over at Cute Overload hahaha. We freak out every time his picture is posted.

  89. Wow…isn’t this the 3rd posting of this hotty? Find more plse…

  90. I submitted those names to the zoo sites contest.

  91. I would like this man and monkey, yes please 🙂

  92. i want to share this with my friends who have babies … would it be rude to compare their bundles of joy to baboons??

  93. @Theresa HAHAHAHAHAHA The Bob Marley video killed me, thanx for the laugh!

And I wonder if Jamin knows he’s a Cute Overload superstar? I bet he has no idea, working on some other project that involves cuddling baby animals and being hot!

  94. BrooklynLovah says:

Woohoo, my newest little neighbors made it to CO! We have a zoo membership and go every weekend 🙂

  95. What is wrong with you people? The real cuteness is in than CRAZY HOT guy!!! *¬* Who cares about the baby thing?! LOL

  96. I heavily approve of The Jamin
