Awesome. Who knew butterflies like to crowdsurf?

  11. ceejoe says:

reminds me of my cats chasing a fly around the house. although, as much as i find my cats adorable, this might even be cuter. something about the penguins’ waddle…

    Butterfly extreme sports.

  20. Gangreless says:

One of these days, butterfly… you’ll be sitting on edge near the water… I’ll be gliding stealthily under the water and suddenly… NOM … gotcha, butterfly. Never again will I suffer this rampant mockery. This injustice will not soon be forgotten. Your death will serve as a warning to all your fluttery flying mocking friends. Yours shall be a quick death. I do want you to suffer, butterfly, eventhough I have longed suffered your existence. I shall be merciful, butterfly, eventhough you have mercilessly taunted me all these many moons. Faretheewell, butterfly. Until we meet again.

…but you don’t have to take my word for it

  22. Dash says:

The butterfly is doing the equivalent of when I wag my thumbs at my dogs . . .

  23. kayouko says:

Haha, best title ever! Nice work, Prongs.

  24. Hon Glad says:

” Hey flutterby, you try doing that under water “.

  25. Zeki says:

    Apparently it’s a penguin thing.

  26. kzgz says:

Fantastic! This reminds me of the story – perhaps apocryphal – about penguins during the war in the Falkland Islands: supposedly they would watch the jets flying overhead to the point that they fell over backwards. And – maybe I’m remembering incorrectly, but somehow I think there was something about it in “Bloom County” with Opus the penguin… Anyone else remember?

  27. mie says:

@kzgz: Yep, there was a reference to that in Bloom county, however: http://www.snopes.com/critters/wild/penguin.asp

  28. Rachel says:

Wait, what? I sent this in! That darn Kirsten stoled my thunders :(
    Nevermind…..CUUUUTE! :D

  29. flutterbye says:

My chickens used to chase anything that moved, but moths were the most fun to watch ’cause the girls used to leap and jump trying to catch ‘em… a fond memory!

  30. kzgz says:

Ah, I should have checked snopes.com! Thanks, Mie! These little guys *are* peering up at that butterfly, looking adorable and mega-streamlined – but at nasty noisy planes? I should have known that would be too much. It’s almost too much for me, and I am not living in a quiet place like the Falklands. (though I hear it is an interesting vacation spot)

  31. Colonel Jenna says:

Oh, great, now I’ve got Benny Hill chase music stuck in my head!

  32. gryt says:

I never would have guessed that penguins would be so interested in a butterfly! So adorbs.

  33. Amy says:

    I hate that butterfly.

  34. I doubt that the reality of your “penguins chasing butterfly” film could top the mental image conjured by those magical words. I will not watch until such time as I am prepared to abandon the dream.
    [sfx: drinking]

  35. Julie says:

I shouldn’t have tried to watch that in a library because I almost suffocated trying not to laugh.

  36. Trixie says:

It’s weird, I can’t think of penguins as birds. They strike me as some kind of tiny person-thing.

  37. Neopatra says:

Penguins and Pilots (supposedly from the Audubon Society magazine)

A Mexican newspaper reports that bored Royal Air Force pilots stationed on the Falkland Islands have devised what they consider a marvelous new game. Noting that the local penguins are fascinated by airplanes, the pilots search out a beach where the birds are gathered and fly slowly along it at the water’s edge. Perhaps ten thousand penguins turn their heads in unison watching the planes go by, and when the pilots turn around and fly back, the birds turn their heads in the opposite direction, like spectators at a slow-motion tennis match. Then, the paper reports, “The pilots fly out to sea and return directly toward the penguin colony and over-fly it. Heads go up, up, up, and ten thousand penguins fall over gently onto their backs.”

  38. Noelegy says:

Neopatra, I remember that story! That was the first thing I thought of when I saw the video.

  39. Lorel J says:

This is one of the few CO posts where I’ve enjoyed the hoooman reaction to the cyooot as much as the cyooot. Which is to say, immensely.

  40. kibblenibble says:

Did anyone notice how one pengy looked up longingly and flapped his leetle winglets when the butterfly finally flew away?

  41. Katiedid says:

Zeki- I like the one on the rock telling the others where to go.. “He’s over there now.. NO! Over there! Pick up the pace guys!!”

  42. Jenn in IL says:

    Take a look, it’s in a book…

  43. Paunchie says:

    That’s so adorbs!!

Reminds me of that commercial where the coach of a kids’ soccer team is all (covered in butterflies) “Come on girls, focus!” and the kids are running all over the field chasing butterflies.

    “Yay! Butterflies!”

  44. O NO He/She/It DI-unt!!!! says:

    HEY nice TAG there, Prongs!!

    “Flutterers”!!! :)

  45. jwal says:

Still smiling from that one. I can even hear one of them saying Hold still, darn you.” Penquins are so damn cute.

  46. MplsDeb says:

I don’t why but I keep hearing this cartoon characther saying:
“which way did it go? which way did it go?”

I have to admit, that must have been funny to see all those penguins fasinated by the planes enough to fall over backwards. Animals all have such funny, quirky personalities.

  47. zelaine says:

*gets one of those toy butterflies on a string attached to a stick and heads to the zoo*

  48. ge says:

    Little help?

  53. chanpon says:

Am I the only one who kept hearing a bowling alley “strike” sound, as I watched the little guys waddling around after the butterfly?
