Sometimes photos of animals come into CO that are surely cute but a little – shall we say – less obvious to decipher.
Now, we know what this little guy is, but do you?

Guessing the correct animal gets you bragging rights only. “Little Baby Boy” (actual name) is staying with Danny W.

A Wombat, mayhaps?
SKWERL!!!!
(panting excitedly)
Hyrax.
Evidence:

Monk? You mean this kind of monk?
Or this?
Or this?
Coatimundi? (had to look up how to spell that…)
Dunno, but I want to skritch hims widdle forehead.
Looks like a hyrax to me…
mongoose?
@Katz, oh my freakin’ GOSH!
My bet is on Coatimundi.
I’m pretty sure that’s a baby red squirrel.
I’d just like to thank Theresa for the fact that I have the Monk theme song stuck my head now :p
Also, I desperately need to pet his little head to find out whether his furs are soft or bristly. I can’t tell from the picture, and I must know!
I don’t have a vote…
But I will say, however (because it’s Christmas, and at Christmas you tell the truth), that we need more posts tagged as “Jellyfish? Ostrich? Star-nosed Mole? I shan’t leeck you” STAT.
Eyecapsuleasaurus?
@chanpon
Wombat. It’s definitely not a capybara and looks to big for a squirrel.
Because of the beady eyes and tiny ear-i-tude, I’m goin’ with squirrel. But I have a feeling it’s something more exotic than that, otherwise, you wouldn’t have asked us!
–bossgripes.com
Wombat!
Don’t care! Tis cute and that’s all that matters! I wants it!
*grabby hands*
(it definitely has a grey squirrel-like head)
i’d say no on the capybara. i’m thinking squirrel. kinda looks like it has a hydrax nose but i don’t think it is with the white around it’s eye. you know i think i’m gonna take squirrel back – the ear doesn’t fit. hmmmm… actually i got nothing so i’ll go back to squirrel haha
Oh, that’s just our Albert. Don;t mind ‘im.
Coatimundi-barracuda-skunk?
Anteater-salamander-giraffe?
Sea cucumber-McDonnell Douglas DC9-Justin Bieber?
@Theresa
yay! I like your non-sequitoriator! or is that a random namerotron?
Oh noes, I’ve been moderated!
Chanpon, it’s either an Eyecapsuleasaurus or a Fuzzy-eared squeenomnom.
100000% in agreement with Patris!
Best. Answer. Ever
Anteater?
Most definitely a red squirrel!
I’d say skwerl, but that looks like a really hairy human ear to me. Kinda weird…
I think I’ll just nibble on his earlets while y’all figure it out.
maybe some type of marmot??
@katz–wow! you learn something new everyday! I had never seen nor heard of a hyrax before. Thank you for the edification.
I don’t have an opinion on what the lil critter is but when will we find out the correct answer?
Giraffe.
spermophilus ground squirrel??
darn it i can tell my evening will be wasted already :p
Stoat.
a squateronifinonalbinoishfurdombit ?
scientific non-common burb bebeh
I believe this little guy is a Wart Hog or a Wild Pig (Javalina here in Arizona) What ever he is, he’s sure cute.
I LOVE Jess’s answer the best!! A Giraffe!! LOL
weasel/ferret/mongoose?
or that animal they made the show about in africa, what are they called?!!
Squiwwel.
I saw a squirrel and it was going like this… :>E
I think it’s an adorable furry pigglet!
Baby Coatimundi for sure.
Me wuv coatis!!
It’s an American Red Squirrel.
I googled “white circle around its eyes” and looked through the resulting images, so I’m confident my answer is correct. He’s cute!
Little brown critter…..Definitely a little brown critter!
Squirrel. Baby wombats and capybaras don’t have the eyering, and while ‘munks do, they are redder with more of an eyestripe… amirite?
i dunno…groundhog lol…here’s an obnoxious groundhog that yells out random names like “Allen” and “Steve”: http://www.shortform.tv/w/cute/obnoxious-groundhog
Prairie dog?
Maybe it’s the comic book guy after a couple dozen burritos/st:tng marathon.
I dun care what it is. I just wanna know why Danny W. gets one and I don’t. *sulks*
I’m sorry, is there a contest going on? ‘Cause I’ve been distracted by this guys ears. His nearly invisible, but intensely nommable ears…
a cute little fuzzy i just wanna cuddle and snuggle aaaaallllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll day
It is, without question, a Tribble.
Signed,
“DAMmit, Jim!!!
I’m a DOCTOR, NOT a veterinarian!!!”
Either a budgerigar, or some kind of octopus.
P.S.: Looks like he won an Olympic medal–see the ribbon hanging on the doorknob. The Super-Quadruple-Gold in Cuteness, perhaps?
My guess is Bebe Red Skwerl…
dunno…doan care…just want to gently hold tiny body and feed her sumpin…little bit of mango, mebbe…
also down with the one-finger forehead skritchin…
Eds, when will we get the real answer?
Based on the eye makeup, I’d say that’s not a capybara, but its close relative, the thedabara.
Ahem I’d like to give a hearty snerk at the categories!
And Theresa you never fail to infect me with earworms … Must get vaccinated!
meerkat!!!
Gecko? Stoat? Rod Stewart?
Mango? Thunderstorm? Optometrist?
Isotope? Toolbox? Sperm whale?
Hors d’oeuvre? Daisy? Bassoon?
Rene Descartes? Terrapin? Stevedore?
Fjord? Biscuit? Canada?

It’s a Chupacabra!
i’m late to play this game, but i say pine marten!
Um, that’s unicorn poop.
methinks squirrel.
Ok, I may have to change my answer to baby red squirrel too. My evidence:
http://wildliferehabinc.org/images/squirrel_sucking_Carol.jpg
Its a wombat, or a baby girrafe that looks like an elephant ? A puppy sized elephant ?
Subtle, HP, subtle.
*Nods approvingly*
We don’t exaclty see them waddling down the street here in Sydney, but I think it’s a baby wombat.
That’s our neighbor Greyball.
Nematode? Tire iron? Coffee pot?
Piano? Claims adjustor? Anaconda?
Potter’s wheel? Heinekin? Dung beetle?
OK, I’ll stop.
Squirrel? But I really think it’s a WOMBAT!
It’s an I Want One.
Hedgehog
no, I was wrong it’s a vole. Not to be confused with the writer Sara Vole sp.
I say chipmunk! But whatever it is, it are waaaaaay cute!
Peeglit!!
bwaaaaaa!! what ees eet!!?!?!!! WHAT EES EET?!?!?!!?!!!!!!!
It’s a rat! In a squirrel costume!
It’s cute….dunno what it is….BUT Theresa’s guesses are the best!!!! Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
It’s an Eastern Gray Squirrel, about 5-6 weeks old.
It is NOT a capybara. Looks a bit like a squirrel but not sure.
I’m guessing mongoose
“It’s a duck! With a big fanny!” (sorry, Brits
)
Perhaps a behbeh bandicoot? (Coatimundi seems more likely, but for some reason “bandicoot” just wants to get said, so here we are.)
And Theresa & 73, not to mention SO many others: hurtsfromlaughing… in a good way…
AT. AT 73. @ ..that thing. Gnaahhh.

“affectionate *snerk* WITH Theresa, NOT AT Theresa)
(*dubblesnerk*)
Theresa: Or a salad fork lifting a wapiti? So elk me, my sides hurt now…

Oooh!! That’s what we call a Dassie here in South Africa. Otherwise known as Rock Rabbit or a Hyrax!!! Got squeeeelllions of the adorable things here in a local National Park called Tsitsikamma. I’ll see if I can get a pic from my mum.
Yip, here we go. Some Dassie pictures!
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=6113053&l=5824282702&id=580298763
All these were taken by my mum, Anthea, who is an avid photographer.

Enjoy!
baby red squirrel. If not, he’s gotten into the red squirrel’s eye makeup.
I’m late ! It’s a hooman bean in dassie/rock rabbit/hyrax/sqwerl/allroundcutie costume. The shape of the earses is giving him away.
And he’s spying on you.
Squirrel…I rescued a baby squirrel…and his widdle head and widdle ear looked just like that. And don’t forget the *plink* *plink* widdle eye was exactly like that. that is a major close up, but that is a beebee skwerrl…
@ali-baba – nice
actually the answer is probably locked up; combination: 1…..2…..3…….4……….5
It is definitely a coatimunditeeny. A bebeh coateh. A very cute and snorglable bebeh coateh with *plink* *plink* widdew eyes.
The comments here are killing me!
Thedabara wins, though! Smart, suble and hilarious.
I think it’s a rat in squirrel’s clothing, for sure.
subtle…SUBTLE. ACK, I hate errors!!!
Having watched Rikki-Tikki-Tavi recently, I’m going with Mongoose.
I’m going with skwerl !!!!!
I go with Skippymom’s guess that it’s either a budgie or an octopus.
THERESA YOU DID NOT
slip “claims adustor” into yer guesses…..whyIougghta………
HP wins Most Obscure Reference for “thedabara.” (I wouldn’t have gotten it if I didn’t do crosswords.)
I say bebbeh stoat. Whatever it is, though, it’s cute.
does that mean that I”M OBSCURE? ‘cuz I got it, the first go-round.
Signed,
Obscure Film References R Us.
coati mundi?
it’s bleen
It’s a GIMME!
Or Thompson’s Gazelle.
While my favorite guess had to be @Decca’s “My prom date” (I assume you sat at the dreaded Table #9?), the correct guess was….
THE SQUIRREL, a close relative to both the optometrist and unicorn poop, apparently.
Ta-da.
Congrats to @Metz who correctly guessed first! You have earned our utmost respect for the next 12 minutes.
Ferret.
And a cute little squee-rrel he is, too! Teeny ear…. *nom*
Shoot I missed my 12 minutes of respect! :-p
Where’s the Doctor with the Tardis when I need him???
*bakes Metz an Internet cake shaped like a sqwerl… Or a sqwerlcake shaped like an Internet, whichever… and pops 12 candles on top.* Here ya go!
*dives headfirst into cake* OM NOM NOM NOM!
*looks up at everyone* Oh, did you want some too?
Well, I’m late to the guessing game, but my first guess was squirrel, but then I changed it to meerkat.
And we need a way to mark comments as “like” or “favorite”–this was one of the best threads evah! =^..^=
Um, squirrel is the only thing that can come between an optometrist and its unicorn poop.
That’s okay. It has internet in it. And we know the internet is ever-expanding – but luckily it is neutralized by contact with digestive acids, or that could get messy – so I’ll just nip me an edge piece later… (Thoughts That Go Through My Head While Waiting For Dinner To Cook, #83241)
Just, y’know, leave the plastic cover off or we’ll all be doing this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CydAhobAQS8
Whenever I think all of humanity has gone completely stupid, I come here and am immensely encouraged by the cleverness and quick wit of all you wonderful folks. Thanks for giving me hope for the future.
The cool thing about the rock hyrax is that it’s related to elephants, and the male adult hyraxes have itsy-bitsy, teeny-tiny little tusks. When photographed from the right angle, they look like tiny little film-noir detectives, with a cigarette drooping nonchalantly from their lip.
For those wondering, here’s a photo of an adult thedabara.
Squirrrr-oh!
Koala?
Looks like it could be a marmot… or perhaps a gopher?
Baby Squirlie
Yooooo its a chipmunk!!1 i think. <3
no wait, its a-dorable
ok rily c.o. people: its a chipmunk!
OTTER!
its a pig!
rat ;B
A mouse!
HP: I know her name and I still missed the joke. My uptake needs a new set of springs, ’cause it’s definitely broken! Thanks.
Coati (aka – Coatimundi)!
a coati mundi??????
I’m gonna take a guess that that cute, fuzzy, ADORABLE little ball of foof is a prairie dog?
