And I’m sure that a) she was contented to people-watch while her owners were gone, and b) that they were taking a bathroom break or running an errand. Hopefully it was quick; it doesn’t look like this was a sunny day, either.

Western Massachusetts is a very strong animal-rights, liberal area and Northampton is populated by people who would as soon gnaw off their own limbs than harm another living creature. Rest assured that this lovely little bovine is in absolutely no distress. Probably the only distress was during the 2-second intervals between each hug or treat tendered by a passerby…

Perhaps leetle calf’s caretaker is lactose intolerant?
This doesn’t really look all that strange to me, but then I once had to tie a dog to a newspaper rack, so… (Don’t look at me like that, I have digestive issues, they had a restroom, it was No Dogs Allowed and no one would stop to hold her.

I’m pretty sure I saw that cow – she was at the Tuesday Farmer’s Market in Northampton and one of the farms had brought her to show her off. So cute! Couldn’t tell if she was with the dairy people or the meat people though!

I teach outside of Northampton frequently, and am right in the middle of farmland, so I’m not surprised this lovely little cow was spotted window-shopping. Not there is Northampton, but Easthampton, Southampton and Westhampton all co-existing. Lovely part of Massachusetts to visit.

I grew up on a farm so I would of first checked to see if that calf was a boy or a girl
before asking who left the little critter tied up like that

@Lucy Loup. Northamptonshire is a market town in England (natch. Obviously it’s full of mad dogs and English men, or more accurately mad English men and dogs but not a great deal of midday sun). I don’t think Baskin Robbins has arrived there yet – has it? Great place to live obviously.
@Aqua. I spent one of the happiest evenings of my whole life on the Emerald Isle many years back. I swam in a sea loch as the sun went down behind the mountains, in the clearest, coldest, water I have ever swum in – ok once you get your shoulders under. The sea was green, the mountains purple, the sky dark gold and blood red. Whenever I’m stressed I go back there in my head.

I absolutely love this adorable little calf! I wish I could take it home with me but I don’t think the landlord would be very happy about it.
I grew up on a farm with cattle, and it’s hard to tell from a picture, but I don’t think the calf looks like it’s in distress. It also has enough rope to move out of the rack if it would like (I’d guess it was originally tied to the side of the rack and has walked into it while exploring).
I agree with Heather that it looks like it could be a Guernsey (doesn’t look like a Jersey to me)

I go to Northampton for lunch and window shopping at least once a month, but I only ever see doggies. That? Would have killed me. Can you pet a calf? I would have been afraid of spooking it.

Once they’re grown, cows will pretty much ignore you unless it’s milking time. Baby bovines, on the other hand, are more tolerant of people and foolishness such as leashes and necklaces made of daisys and such. I know a couple hand-reared cows that are as friendly as dogs, although nowhere near as smart. This little beauty is adorable!
Graciedodog- A wannabe? Really? I’m perfectly aware that cows lay down when there is rain, if you were referring to something else then it completely went over my head and I have no idea what you were trying to say.
I love trips to Northampton, but would advise only getting pastries/cakes from the La Fiorentina in Spfld. as the ones in Northampton are frozen and sent there from the one on Main St. in Springfield (I recommend the chocolate cake with a filling of whipped cream and strawberries,yummy!)
