  47. BStrange says:

Kris10 – I’ve had that combo before, too. I’ll preface this with: It would probably be better to keep them apart completely. Guinea pigs can’t really fight back, even their bite isn’t worth much, and they aren’t very fast compared to other prey animals, so they’re pretty much defenseless. They also (along with rabbits) have been described as possibly dying of fear – heart-attack style – if terrified enough. I never had this happen with mine, but I’ve known one person who did, when she introduced a rambunctious Lab pup to her guinea pig and the peeg keeled over dead. 😦

That said, I have had the two species share a room. But keep in mind that my cats had already been taught to ignore the peeping ducklings, baby chicks, and hamsters, and that “no means no” or serious consequences would result. A cat who ignores you when you tell it to stop something, or that takes off with its catch, is NOT safe around a guinea pig or any other “prey” pet. Nor are many cats who’ve lived as “barn cats” or fully feral from any point since they could follow their mom, as they tend to have a more “activated” prey drive.

If you’re going to have them around each other, getting the cat as a young kitten helps, or as an older cat which has shown little interest in stalking and hunting (they do exist). Either way, gradual, supervised introduction to each other is best. Test the peeg with something with the cat’s smell first, and if it seems unimpressed or gets used to it, next from a safe distance with the guinea pig in a cage for a hasty exit and the cat restrained so it can’t walk right up to the bars. (This level of careful acclimation is probably a good idea anyway so that if the cat gets to the side of the peeg’s cage, it doesn’t scare the poor thing to death while you’re not there.) If the guinea pig shrieks or otherwise panics, end the experiment immediately.

Playing it safe means not let the cat play with the guinea pig, no matter how cute it is, as that can encourage them to think of it as a toy. Toys are prey, remember, in a cat’s mind. Even treating it as a playmate can result in the guinea pig being harmed accidentally. And NEVER EVER leave them together unsupervised.

The peeg should have a safe, catproof, comfy cage arrangement for the rest of the time, ideally (and especially if the two aren’t getting along!) somewhere where the cat is not allowed to go.

  48. BStrange says:

One last thing: Guinea pigs can make a real racket when they think food might be forthcoming. The wheet-wheet noise (different from the longer screech when they’re alarmed) that says “I HEARD you open the fridge and you’d BETTER be planning on sharing!” can be heard throughout the average house… So if you’re fond of sneaking midnight snacks, they’re an awesome diet aid. 😉

  49. Lula Mae says:

That’s helluvah preeeteee in peeenk notorious P.I.G.
