How to Fire Your Maru Cannon

Like all dangerous munitions, the Maru Cannon must be loaded with extreme care. Do not attempt to place Maru in the cannon yourself — simply leave the cannon unattended and Maru will be drawn inexplicably into it.

Next, make sure that Maru is coiled tightly at the bottom of the cannon, to attain the necessary “spring-loaded” effect.

When firing, be aware that Maru may not always follow the desired trajectory.

  2. Mary (the first) says:

  3. Kaboom! Go Maru!

  4. Yeah!!! Canon ball Maru!

  5. marthava says:

I don’t think Maru and his human really live here. I think they live somewhere else, during which time this home is hermetically sealed against dust and dirt. They just come back to shoot Maru videos, and then they leave again.

  6. I ❤ Maru and read his blog daily!

  7. I love that you can see his GIANT cat tree in the background.. in pristine shape… and he chooses to “play” with the trash can 😉 Cats are weird, man..

  8. victoreia says:

    @BrianMPLS: YES!

  9. You go, Maru! I swear the little guy can levitate. That’s how he comes straight up out of a box and clears the edge with room to spare!

@Marthava – you’re right. I’m always amazed at how clean everything is in Maru’s world. It’s almost as if there’s no cat living there – nothing is shredded and there are no cat toys laying around!!!

  10. kibblenibble says:

I concur with those who admire the cleanliness of Maru’s home. In fact, whenever I’m about to take a picture of my kitties, I often hesitate with thoughts like, “But the floor isn’t clean.” Maru’s human sets the bar WAY too high. 😦

  11. MARU MARU MARU MARU!!!!! I adore that cat.

@marthava, etc.: I too live in awe of Maru’s extraordinarily clean house. Does this cat never shed? Never throw up a hairball? Never fail to pick up his toys and return them to the toy basket? How is this level of cleanliness possible?!

  12. Oops–my comment to BrianMPLS must have been poorly formatted. I was merely snorting at your remark–too funny!

  13. @Berg
He’s got his toy closet, and he opens the door and brings the toys his human when he wants to play. Probably that’s why there is no toys on the floors. His human can safely put them back and Maru can initiate the play nonetheless on his own. 😀

  14. Love the action shot, like a circus cannon: sproinnnnnng!!!

  15. MamaLana says:

    I LOVE MARU!!!!!

  16. Maru is my personal hero!

  17. God, I ,love this cat, especially the extra-thick, twitchy, stripey tail tip. 😀

  18. Everybody Loves Maru.
He should have his own sitcom. I could watch him for hours.

  19. i love maru =^.^=

  20. @manny – hahaha

    i loff the 3rd pic!!

  21. Yeay Maru!! Tocks Up! Oh Maru, how I love you.

  22. I love his white feets!

  23. jrochest says:

Is there a “being squished in small places is cute” Rule of Cuteness?

It seems to me that the last three postings draw on that idea!

  24. Sweeda88 says:

=D Maru! My favorite web kitteh!

  25. “Master at Arms! Prepare the long eighteens!”
“Back with the guns, lads! Give ’em a taste of good English shot!”
“All guns ready sir! We’re ready to fire!”

“Erm, short , sir. I don’t think that big floofy tail helped the flight.”

  26. essensual says:

What a funny kitteh…always makes my day. Thank you, Maru.

  27. For those about to pop …..(out of a cannon)
    We salute you !!!
    ( cue the cannons )

  28. Ka-blammo!

  29. I once stayed up all night doing nothing but watch Maru videos. How is a cat climbing in and out of things so darned entertaining?

  30. Maru is so round and jumbo.

  31. oh man. I didn’t even notice the clean house. I was all fixated on the beautiful and entertaining Maru. Dudes, it’s about the cute, not the clean.

  32. 😆 Look out 😆 The Maru cannon has been fired 😆

  33. Stephen says:

    ENOUGH of this feckin’ cat!

  34. BStrange says:

I’ve gone and caught Maru-itis too, drat it all. I resisted at first.

Then I made the critical error of watching this, which I missed back in April ’09:

    ans this:

    …Boxhab indeed. So now I’m hooked. Is there a Maru-hab, I wonder?

  35. Hon Glad says:

A Maru maroon, ready to explode.

  36. wow, the third photo is nicely taken, no blur! *thumb up*
Cutie cat! ^._.^ (<– hoo, now that looks more like a bat does it? :-D)

  37. BStrange says:

Riddle: “What is the difference between a trashcan and a sink drain?”

Answer: “If you’re Maru, there isn’t one”:

No Maru, you can’t fit through there. (Drainhab?) 😀

  38. Katrina says:

Ladies and Gentlemen, the ULTIMATE LUURKENSPROING! He can point it toward me, I’ll catch him! (with large mitts).

  39. Darling Creature says:

Huge, huge Maru Fan. I read his Blog every day! Maru is fantabulous!!

  40. marthava says:

@coel – that was amazing. I think this puddy is a human in a cat’s body. He just spends his life lauging (internally) at all the humans who think he’s doing CAT things. 🙂

  41. Rachael says:

Floofy butt rock star!!! I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Maru.

  42. I love Maru crazy much!

  43. I *heart* the ‘springloaded’ effect when Maru comes out of a box/cannon, the vertical levitashions. Hilar!!

The clean floors, it’s a Japanese thing. I follow a Japanese photog on flickr who has 4 cats. Not a speck of dirt or dust anywhere.!Traditionally a Japanes house had very little furniture, right? They’d sit on the floor. Roll out sleeping mats at night. On the floor. Then it’s gotta be clean.

  44. LOL…Catzilla.

  45. MARUUUUUU! He has the cutest face of any cat. EVAR.

  46. BStrange says:

It probably helps that the Scottish Fold (what Maru is, minus the fold gene) is a low-shedding breed. And he seems to adore the attention he gets when brushed, rather than heading for the hills when the kitty comb comes out. I suspect that makes it easier to keep everything from ending up “covered in a fine layer of cat”, to quote from Get Fuzzy. 🙂

  47. I just checked out the Maru blog, and LMAO all over again. I especially love the English versions of the captions: “Hey Maru! You may be stepped on if you extend in such a way.”

  48. PS: “Where’s the kaboom? There was supposed to be an earth-shattering kaboom!”

  49. KittyAdventures says:

I see I am the only one with the urge every time I see that first picture to goose Maru into the trash can…LOL…

  50. @Coel: Thanks for the link to that video of Maru choosing a toy! That certainly does explain the absence of toys in the background. Maru rocks, and I love that cat more every time I see a new photo or video.

  51. I totally read Maru’s blog every day, mainly for the english translations of the conversations Maru is having with his owner. They make me literally LOL sometimes.

Also, “round and jumbo” may be the best description of Maru, evar.

  52. I wanna poke that little cute ass and go all aww with him. :DD

  53. bambooska- Seek help.

  54. cute cat….my kitty gets the same look in his eye when he is on mouse patrol.

  55. Maru never disappoints! What a fantastic kitty! If I could meet a pet celebrity, I would pick Maru. I love him!

  56. Copperbat says:

I’m trying to imagine the noise a Maru Cannon would make:

  57. When I saw that first pic, I thought Maru was the cannon.

  58. wuyizidi says:

@Theresa – I imagine the impact from a falling Maru will be very impressive, but it’s still no ‘planet killer’ like the Illudium PU-36 Explosive Space Modulator.

  59. Maru is the best cat ever 😀
So smart and fluffy and cute 😀

  60. @Wuyizidi, yes, but you need those naughty, complex computers. I could just pinch them.

  61. victoreia says:

@Theresa: nice channeling of Marvin the Martian!

  62. vickers says:

    I can hear the
    the kitty-cannon makes

  63. @Katrina – Luurkensproing! Best term for it EVER!

    Maru the Magnificent rides again!

  64. Is CO on strike today?

  65. @Sue, I thought the same thing…

    I need my cute fix.

  66. Mod-in-Training says:

    –(ISE BEST HIDER!!!!!!!!)]

  67. Wow! That would be some surprise, being hit by a cat cannon. ^^;

  68. first cannon i ever heard go *bloop* when fired

  69. cafegrrl says:

I love Maru! He’s so cute!

  70. I am a new Maru fan and would love to have a Maru of my own. Can anyone please tell me what kind of cat he is. He’s so cute! I love his buggy little face!

  71. BStrange says:

Joyce @71 – According to his YouTube page, Maru is a “Scottish Fold”, and his shape and personality do back that up! Some Fold cats don’t get the gene that causes the fold(s) in their ears. It may be a breed fault, but I actually like them better without it, the perma-smooshed ears look is not cute to me.

They’re also supposed to be a low-shed breed, but a few of Maru’s photos from shedding season remind me that “low” is a relative term. Still better than any cat I ever had. 😉

  72. Trez4500 says:

While I love Maru as much as the next human, I’d like a new post pleeeeeesssseee 🙂

  73. Do you pronounce his name MAIR-oo or muh-ROO?

  74. very cute cat and healthy cat..i love it..

  75. I don’t like when I look at your page and want updated cuteness and see yesterday’s post…I needed constant cuteness –24/7 I’m a addicted and need more now!!!

  76. Maru is awesome and an endless source of wonder and qte.

Jeez, my cats just use cannons to help get their projectile vomit go even further. Who knew they could actually they could actually fire themselves (12 pounds of very solid shot). Quite an efficient way to get to the noms even faster than walking. 🙂

  77. I’m going into withdrawal.

*shaking and sweating, crouched in the corner*

  78. Does it seem to anyone else that posts have gotten slightly more sporadic since Theo left? I miss him. 😦 (No offense to Mod-in-Training!)

  79. kibblenibble says:

    Dear Orange,
Quick, go to the Zooborns website! Baby polecats! (They look like ferrets to me.) Anyway, there’s lots of cute there…Alas, no clever commentary, but the cute may tide you over.

  80. Trez4500 says:

  81. LaFeeVerte says:

I have not posted before, but does anyone else think that Maru would make a perfect Catbus?

  82. Yesh, Maru would make a grrreat Catbus!

And more cute, pweez, CO! 🙂

  83. BStrange says:

Julie @74: If it’s anything like it sounds in marugao (“round face” – maru meaning “round”) – then try the “maru” component of these words (audio pronunciation links):

    That’s the best I’ve got.

  84. BStrange says:

    Link failure. Attempting to fix.

  85. BStrange says:

More precise links aren’t gonna work. So: Go there, scroll down, click the appropriate audio links.

  86. the owner of this home must have a fetish about cleaning. i feel ashamed when i see my apartment compared to Maru’s.

  87. ysubassoon says:

I can’t believe no one has mentioned this yet, but Maru has a DVD now, released back in February. There was a link to it in the upper lefthand corner of his blog.

If you live in Japan, order here:

    Outside of Japan, order here:

  88. Bombs-er….MARU’s away! He should the the CO mascot.

  89. edmundh says:

Still pictures are not enough. I demand an instructional video on how to load and fire the Maru Cannon!

  90. ysubassoon says:

@edmundh, I think it looks something like this:

  91. Mod-in-Training says:

    [that’s okay, jen, i don’t mind.

the worst part is that the sporadicism has no discernible cause. i, like all of you, wait, with bated breath, for each and every tiny dollop to swell with enough squee to drop from the mighty cute extrusion device in the sky. i’ve begged, i’ve prayed, i’ve shaken my fists (and someone else’s fists, but i was asked to stop as they were being used by a boxer at the time)! Fie on you, CO gods! i’ve thrown virgins through their mail slots, i’ve pressed the lever until my big paws … bled.

alas, no pellet. i’ve even tried capitalizing my sentences… all for nought.

and so, my friends, i wait with you in the darkened parking lot, near the line of limousines and the tour bus, watching the stage door. in the rain. next to a clown. and a mime. and a portrait of abe lincoln whose eyes follow you wherever you go.

and then, suddenly, on the roof with a clatter, comes a post! huzzah! a post! a post!

and peace settles across the land.

and that is why we should always be good to godot.

[don’t be afraid–theo will tell you. i really love my friday night coffee parties.]

  92. kitty lover says:

he should be in a circus!!!!

  93. darkshines says:

I love the engrish on the Maru blog to, I NEVER want it to change! My favourite so far is “The photograph of the snake is displayed when you click the following photographs. Please never click it if you are weak in a snake.”

  94. BStrange says:

I love that about it too, it’s part of the “Maru experience”. (“Maru likes the toy of the tunnel very very much.”)

Am I the only one wondering what the occasional “omg” was before translation? (See the “Harry the toy hedgehog” Maru-posts for examples.) Was it that to begin with or is “OMG” the closest approximation of some other expression being used? Inquiring minds want to know.

  95. opportunity says:

Maru should do a world tour. I will actually pay money to spend time with him, and take pictures with him, pet him, squeeze him. OMG!!!

  96. RE: Stephen says:

How can you say that? Maru is the most lovely cat ❤ You are very stupid!! -.-"
