As I was watching this, I was thinking, if Maru’s mom puts him through these exercise paces on a regular basis, this is proof positive that he isn’t fat, just big-boned. But then at the end he just lays down on the job and bats at the toy . . . so, the jury’s still out, in my mind.

I worried that he might have been declawed, too, but then saw some clip where he was obviously using his claws. Quite relieved, I was. Love this big boy, Maru.

i adore Maru, of course, but I am also endlessly fascinated by the fact that he seems to live in the Cleanest House in the World. all that clean and white! and a cat! HOW DO THEY DO IT?
I love that guy. He is so uncoordinated, I just want to hug him and give him a shoebox. I bookmarked his japanese website at home and check him out after I look at what you cute-sters are up to here…..
but i still cannot believe you did not wish him happy birthday!!! (He was 3 years old last week you know….)
I love the audible “thumps” whenever he lands. But the best part, for me, is near the end, when he’s on his back with both front paws around the toy. The toy gets pulled away and he’s all “hey, I was eating that!” giggle
Can anyone recall, have we ever heard Maru make a noise in any of his videos? I find it hard to believe that he has nothing to say — I imagine Maru as having many important opinions — but he never seems to meow.
Maru is plush, plump and perfect. I could never get enough of that cushiony cat. I just want to squish my face into the plushy, well-tended entity that is Maru.
Elsajeni, Maru does indeed talk. Mugumogu has a couple of vids called “Miaow miaow Maru”, have a search for them. He also chitters when he sees an insect.

Maru is definitely not fat, he is just heavy built & rounded. My boy Lugosi is quite large, weighs 6kg (Maru probably weighs 8 or 9 kg though from the looks of it!), and simply is just a big cat, but not fat – just like some humans have petite builds and some are heavily boned.
I am SO pleased that others notice the immaculate condition of that house… I watch Maru oohing and ahhing at how entertaining he is, then ooh and ahh at the clean white couch! The shiny hair-free floor! Of course, you could probably put a cloth around Maru and he would clean with his belly… awww Maru you’re so lovable.
I just really, really, really want to go live with Maru and his owner. They seem to live such blissfully calm lives, filled with naps and petting and playing, and all in such an immaculately clean, sunlight filled and beautifully minimalistic house. I suppose that Maru’s owner must have a job of some kind, but she certainly seems to have enough time at home with Maru. It’s always so quiet there, and you can just feel the love.

I think Maru could sell Jenny Craig better than Valerie Bertinelli. Or they could do a commercial together, without that red-headed woman who acts as though her head might fall off at any moment…
People would watch Maru and buy Jenny Craig. And they wouldn’t care a fig if Maru lost one single ounce -or not.
It’s the luck of the draw whether a Scottish Fold kitten’s ear will develop the actual fold. The one I had as a kid had one folded ear and one straight one. We called him “The Scottish Semi-Fold.”
Somewhere (can’t find it now, darn it) I read an online interview with Maru’s person, who is a guy. No picture, but the text of the interview made it clear. Will keep looking and post the link to the interview here.
Also, last April Maru had a bath. With his fur slicked down he doesn’t look fat at all, which lends credence to the “fluffy” theory.
Seems cruel at approx. 2:30 when Maru who is clearly underfed and on the brink of starvation, had his snack pulled away just as he was getting a good grip on it. Cruel, I say.
