Gravity 101

Many people think kittehs are naturally agile, but in fact this skill requires months of rigorous training to achieve. In this video example, students at Kitteh Kollege undergo advanced postgraduate training in slippery surfaces.

Update: The creator of the video provides this background: “The cat gave birth up there, I didn’t put them up there. I blocked off the top of the slide, they got around it, I blocked it off better, and finally kept them safe. They got on the slide themselves and even after falling off when I wasn’t there, they still kept getting back on. I did help the kitten at the end back up.”

  1. ADORABLE! Just when momma cat gets one…the other slips by! so cute!

  2. LizzyBee says:

Very cute! I found myself actually making the sound effects for the second kitteh: “Sliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide…BONK.”

  3. 260Oakley says:

Welcome to the amewsment park. Entrance fees based on a sliding scale.

  4. Katrina says:

    Mew! Oh, mew!

  5. LizzyBee says:

I should mention that I am making these noises at work…my co-workers think I’m nuts.

  6. This is the sound from my desk

    AWWWWWW! Bwahahahahaha!!!

    Awwww.. HEEEHeee Awww Oops Awwww!

    Teeeeeheeeeeee

  7. Katiedid says:

How did the person holding the camera resist the urge to save the last kitten. I practically jumpped out of my seat ready to catch the little guy! Also, MEW!

  8. loves2sneeze says:

omg, that tiny pathetic kitteh mewing gets me every time! sooooo kyooooot!

  9. awww the cutest little mews!!

haha it was so classic that the other one started sliding right as she got the first one back :D

  10. Yeah, put down the camera and feed the cat. I am with you Radiobleep.

  11. Sweeda88 says:

Oh, how cute! And I don’t think there was a NEED to rescue the cats. They weren’t going to be hurt!

  12. DogEared says:

    *backfeetsiespaylage*

  13. I’m half convinced that this just keeps going on and on and on from dawn till dusk, with only a few feeding time breaks every now and then. Well at least momma kitty gets back into shape with all that downhill-uphill training!

  14. Noelle (the First) says:

What a good Mommy! This was sooooooooooo adorable, just what I needed today!

  15. I agree with radio bleep & Winston !
How can anyone taking video not keep the baby from falling off that slide ?
It’s not like they didn’t see it coming !
    mew !

  16. Kiragirl says:

not funny at the end, at all

  17. I’ m not really sure if this should be here and if it’s cute.Putting those kittens there was not a very wise idea in my opinion. Sliding is not a natural behaviour for them. Many things can happen to adult cats – mainly out of their natural curiosity, but here it’s just silly. And the reaction of kittens’ mum proves it.
Generally speaking – completely UNNECESSARY event!!!!!!

  18. I didn’t think this video was funny at all.

  19. kestrien says:

To preempt the nuffers, there’s a little note on the video:

The cat gave birth up there, I didn’t put them up there. I blocked off the top of the slide, they got around it, I blocked it off better, and finally kept them safe. They got on the slide themselves and even after falling off when I wasn’t there, they still kept getting back on. I did help the kitten at the end back up

  20. HEY! How about a cushion at the bottom of those stairs!??!?!?!? Momma cat picked a great, safe place for her babies. A little help from her humans would be greatly appreciated, I am sure. I suggest a multi folded comforter!

  21. darn – bottom of that SLIDE not stairs,

  22. Those pathetic mews are enough to break your heart! But kittens are surprisingly durable, as evidenced by the end of the vid. He’s like “sheeeeeeeeetttttt……..oh, okay.”

  23. @Shanno, I was thinking something similar — Why, of all places would baby kittens and their mom be at the top of slide. What??? Why???? strange.

  24. I think this was adorable and the little mews just keeeeled me!

Nuffers- READ the YouTube description. The owner tried to block it all off to keep the kittens safe, they just kept getting into it. And the kitten at the end was just fine. It wasn’t a long drop and momma came and got him/her shortly after. Baby birds fall out of trees and are fine FFS. Nature is resilient and if the slide really were that dangerous, momma would move the babies away to a safer spot. Chill the heck out!

  25. People do alot of cruel things just to get a laugh?
    horrible girl

  26. carolina says:

Leaving scared kittens crying for help is NOT cute.
Just so a human can take pictures?
Would they’d do the same to a human baby?
    Selfish.

  27. Momma Cat chose the top of the slide … otherwise she would not be taking them back up there in the first place.

  28. Paunchie says:

Those teeny mews! They pierce the heart! I wanna stuff him in my mouf, too!

  29. Sigh Must we go through this whole commentroversy thing every couple of days

turns on video again to giggle.

  30. It’d be interesting to see these kittens again in a few weeks or months– it seems like we’re already seeing personality development in action (the timid first kitten and the braver– or at least less easily upset– second one).

  31. junemrc says:

I saw this yesterday and was hoping you’d post it!! this is seriously precious and preposterously cute!

  32. Christy says:

Before everyone gets their knickers in a twist, I read on the youtube page that the mother cat gave birth to the kittens in that playhouse thing. They were not placed there so someone could get a video. Also, maybe if the kittens fall off the slide a couple time they will learn not to go out until they are older lol

    End Lecture.

  34. georgina0912 says:

So what if someone does not like the video or has something un-kyooot to say? Everybody has different opinions and perceptions of the postings here. A little bit of spice (a.k.a. commentroversy) never hurt anyone.

    BTW:

    – Kittens totally cute.

    – Worried kittens momma, totally cute.

    – Hearing the scared meows of first kitten, a bit heartbreaking.

    My opinion.

  35. Hon Glad says:

Arse first, seems the best technique.

  36. omg, adorable!!! what an adventure for the little kittens! the mommy cat has things totally under control — good job mommy cat!

  37. bubbyscranky says:

Mommah cat is probably saying: “Will you two stop going down the slide! Serves you right if you fall off!”

  38. Those kittens aren’t going to get hurt, yeesh. I thought it was adorable! Animals living out in the wild will encounter much scarier things than a little sloooow slip down a slide. They are fine! :)

  39. flutterbye says:

I too think mommy has things well in hand..er, paw! The gal taking the video has probably seen it a dozen times and decided to tape it just this once.

Teh little mews do indeed tug at my heartstrings, tho!

  40. @ Hon Glad…isn’t it always the case in most things??? :-)

  41. I thought this was cute. People underestimate animals, especially baby ones.

  42. victoreia says:

NOTE TO NUFFERS: I hope you folks are running out to save all the feral cats, too. They’re at just as much risk from skinning their knees while running in the park, and breaking an arm while climbing the tree in the back yard that you told them not to climb……oh, wait, that’s all the kids paranoids have wrapped in cotton.

    [stepping off soapbox]

  43. victoreia says:

And suddenly I have an earworm: Simon & Garfunkel’s “Slip Sliding Away”!

  44. I dig how Mom Cat is so confident walking down the slide. She had it all figured out.

  45. But the sound of a kitten in distress…my brain goes into automatic protection mode. It really does flip some sort of switch!

  46. flutterbye says:

@victoreia, thanks for the earworm! It fits perfectly!

  47. Mew! Mew! So cute xD

    and

Oh dear lord, enough with the nuffers. The kitteh took a small tumble. They are made of tougher stuff than that.

  48. StormCat42 says:

I have seen babeh Kittehs fall from some pretty amazing heights, and land without problems… This little guy’s fall was about what, 4 inches? He’s fine… And I’m sure Mom appreciated the help from the human, when she put the little guy back up on the slide… Having been owned by Kitteh’s all of my life, I can tell you that these little guys are in no danger…

Oh, and Oakley, great pun, once again!!! You’re de bomb!!!

  49. yay, i submitted this yesterday! how does the momma cat not slide down? does she have special grippy paws? i love her. and the babies are twins!!

  50. Saffron says:

Aww…kittens just fine. Kittens trip over themselves all the time.
Reminds me of the George Carlin routine about kittehs….
    NSFW; language. :)

  51. Kentucky Kitty says:

    OMG I want!!!!!!

  52. best momma ever! so so so sweet. the kitties are fine, especially with such a attentive mom!

  53. tootoot says:

    Too true, Saffron

Those kittens are fine. When my cat was a kitten he’d try to jump for things a little too high for him. After falling a foot or two, he always safely rebounded. Only his pride was hurt.

  54. AuntieMame says:

“That’s what you said about the mailman.” LOL!

(Although I still think GC would have been equally funny without the F bombs…)

  55. AuntieMame says:

Oh, and also I meant to say something about the futility of cat-herding. Poor Mommeh kitteh! :D

  56. AliceBlue says:

People are Nuffing this? Seriously? I just got in (mock) trouble for giggling too loudly at work! This is freakin’ adorable! It’s cat nature to get into, and safely back out of, a spot hence the whole ‘nine lives’ thing.

  57. i think its lame that there has to be an “update” at the bottom because so many overly-sensitive people get upset at this “mean cruel lady” who let her cat have kittens in the clubhouse and let it fall off the slide at the end.

get over yourselves people. momma cat knows what she’s doing.

  58. crackjob says:

Mama kitty is sooooo patient. Probably has to rescue sliding kittens all day long.

  59. I would say that the glass is half full.

Others would say it is half empty.

    Great Video!

Cats will have their kittens were ever they want, usually some place safe and undisturbed.

Thanks for SHARING this moment with us. It was very cute and heartwarming to see the kittens and the mother interact with the slide.

  60. darling little baby mews. and a loving momma comes to the rescue. how very very sweet. want want want little tuxedo babies!

  61. Oh my, I had to stop it after 30 seconds in. I was getting anxious hearing that little baby and hearing its pitiful cry. Judging from above though, it sounds like Momma was attentive and saved the day!
    More kitties and gravity:

  62. ViolaDeLesseps says:

    Certain people are so tiresome.

I love the moment when the second kitlet sticks halfway down, with one back paw stretched out & the other tucked under. :)

  63. I’ve seen some fat-bellied kittehs in my life, but that last one . . . WHOA!

  64. amandaaaaaaa says:

i love how the first kitten tries really hard, and the mom eventually comes down to save him. but the second one kind of just falls and doesn’t try, so the mom is all “if i save you, you won’t learn anything”.

also my kitty made some very concerned mews when she heard this!

  65. I think you should turn off comments, seriously, the nuffing is getting ridiculous, every single thing, seriously people!

  66. A Mamma Cat’s work is never done!

Very short drop on to soft grass at the end – bebbeh was fine, and Auntie Human comforted him. I admit, though, the bebbeh’s cries got my heartstrings, too! but then again, human kids can make some really pitiful cries when they’re not really in danger, as well.

Floofy little tuxie babies getting too big for their tiny formal britches + world-weary Mom Cat = INSTAQTE!

  67. not cute, no matter what she says.

  68. Really folks a kitten falling a small distance is no big deal. All babies have to explore their world at some point and yes that’s going to include falling down. If you wrapped them in cotton and never let them do anything they would never learn about the world around them. Plus cats are extremely good at surviving falls without injury.

  69. Miss Tara says:

    Squeeeee!

  70. Gosh, terrified little kittens is now cute? I don’t think so. Whoever was recording them should have put down the camera and helped them.

  71. I’m not happy that there isn’t something soft on the ground to catch them. Put the camera down and help them.

  72. Jessica says:

These kittehs didn’t look terrified at all. This strikes me as something they do all day, everyday. The second one didn’t even make a sound. He knows how the game is played. He just wanted to slide, slide, slippety slide.

  73. Jessica says:

Something soft? You mean like that dirt he lands on?

  74. Good grief… people will nuff anything

  75. Melissa says:

Hehe, really guys? Do you really think the little kittens are in danger.. of falling 4 inches to the ground?… they’re CATS. I think its safe to assume all the nuffers have never actually had a kitten as a pet before and are just completely clueless to this species. These kittens are not in peril, its stupidly obvious from the video. and how sloooooow they scootch down the slide. Hell, momma cat can walk up and down it without slipping for crying out loud.

There isn’t something “soft” to land on? Really? It’s DIRT. Animals live outside and fall in dirt all the time. When I was a kid I fell in dirt all the time. I think cats would be extinct by now if a 4 inch fall into some dirt did any harm to them. ROFLMAO.

I watched this video more times than I should have and giggled every time. So cute! Thanks for posting! :)

  76. @dg1532
I’m like you – those pitiful baby mews sound like alarm sirens at full volume to me – one mew and I am in full protection mode – I bet alot of the nuffers are the same – you can’t even think there is a logical explanation when all you are thinking is “I must protect that baby” – I hope those babies and their momma found good forever homes

  77. dr. berthaservant says:

This video should be entitled “The Myth of Sisypuss.”

    :: thank you ::

  78. LOL @ Jessica! “You mean like that dirt he lands on?” HAHAHAHAHA. CHILL OUT, PEOPLE! ! ! Wow. They aren’t hurt! Jeez. Move on.

  79. Yes, do interfere with the kittens of a nearby mama cat. There’s no possible way that could go wrong or require stitches.

  80. Rocky_Raccoon says:

Look at the kitten after it lands. IT IS FINE. It got up and started looking for more things to explore, probably because it is completely awesome. Nice video.

  81. “The Myth of Sisypuss.” dr. berthaservant are you trying to give 260Okley a run for his/her money? That made me grown out loud!

  82. dr. berthaservant says:

We are not in competition. We are in collaboration. :-)

  83. A formerly sane human being says:

    *bangs head against wall*

    *cries*

WHY, nuffers, WHY? Why must you be so goddamn STUPID and ARROGANT and EVIL? Why will you never listen to reason? Why must you condemn everyone who’s not as ignorant as you? WHY???

Don’t you realize you’re hurting me?

    I can’t take it anymore.

    *shoots self through head*

  84. Peanut's mama says:

OMG those babies are so cute! But I agree that the tiny cries broke my heart.

And not to nuff, but how the heck could camera lady NOT run up to catch the 2nd little guy before he plopped on the ground?! “Are you OK honey?” No, I fell on my head. Thanks for nuthin.”

  85. 260Oakley says:

Ah, dr. berthaservant, you have unpun me! (doffs cap)

  86. Holy Carp, people. I SENT THIS IN! IT GOT MY CUTE SEAL of APPROVAL (bark bark). If I haven’t earned my kind-to-animules cred around here, I just don’t know what to do (throws up hands and walks away in a huff)

  87. chanpon says:

Saw this on another site and almost immediately barfed up some rainbows right after seeing it. The second time around I think I”m going to go poo some daisies.

    Thanks folks!

  88. debkakes says:

@A formerly sane human being I am with you all the way to the funny farm. Does anyone REALLY think dat little kitty was hurt for one second?? or that the piteous mews of the first kitty were really cries of horrible, excruciating pain? Do they put pillows under every object higher than 5″ in their homes in case a pet should fall? Quilting on the floors in case they should stumble? a nanny in case they should mew or bark? ARRRRRGGGGHHHHH!

  89. Not That Mike The Other Mike says:

@Theresa: If you can’t walk away in a huff, how about a minute and a huff? And I’ve updated the post to thank you for your submission.

  90. Fortunately, I read NOMTOM’s update before I saw the video, so I just giggled and squeed all the way through it. Those little white socks on the tuxies about killed me.

Kittens, like Bumbles, tend to bounce.

260Oakley and Dr. Berthaservant win the thread.

  91. @NTMTOM– Thanks! If I can’t get gas, I’ll get ethyl. If I can’t get Ethyl, I’ll get Mabel. ;)

  92. When I was fostering kittens, they voluntarily did much worse things to themselves than falling a few inches. They would run head-first into furniture with a resounding crack, and then continue frolicking on as if nothing had happened. At that point in life, kittens might as well be made out of rubber–they bounce off everything and keep on exploring completely un-phased.

  93. Omigosh so adorable! And in response to another comment cats will have their babies in odd places when I was younger one of our cats had a litter in the rafters of our barn we had to watch them constantly and rescue them.

  94. Elisa Wolfe says:

I am so tired of people using their pets in contrived situations, in which the
poor animals are confused and disoriented, just so the people can get on this
website. I’m beginning to have misgivings about the ethics of Cute Overload
for the need to exploit these videos for the sake of having enough to fill
    their website. Enough!

  95. victoreia says:

Guess it’s a good thing I never had a video camera to record my dearly departed Butch and Tabby barreling through the house and right into the sliding glass door…..I’d get shot for not stopping them from hitting the door!

  96. Melissa says:

    “Contrived situations”…

Isn’t the mere idea of having a pet, putting an animal in a contrived situation? We don’t NEED pets to survive, and they sure don’t need us… but they make good companions and give us love and something to love back. Bottom line is we keep them as pets, in our homes, for our own amusement. When they do something cute and silly like sliding down a slide is just adorable. You people need to get out more :)

  97. dear nuffers,

you know, there are several wars going on and lots of people died today. give your energy and time to things that could actually save someone or something. really, there are MUCH MORE important things to get upset about. :)

*watches video again for the 3rd time today and laughs to self…*

  98. Not That Mike The Other Mike says:

@Melissa: It appears that Ms. Wolfe did not read the explanatory notes on the video, which I was thoughtful enough to copy from the page at YouTube. If she had, she would have read that the mother cat chose that playhouse herself, that the kittens play on that slide often, and that the video creator did indeed help the kitten afterwards.

I would like to correct another inaccuracy in Ms. Wolfe’s complaint. She accused the video’s creator of staging the situation to get on this site. That is not the case. I noticed the video on YouTube and copied it here on my own initiative. We rarely get videos from the people who actually created them; most are brought to our attention by other people who have seen them on other sites.

  99. Crystal says:

After watching this video a few times, I have to agree with Jessica. The second kitten totally slid down on purpose. It walked with little stumbling (at least for a tiny kitten), turned around and then laid down and slid. He got stuck and then wiggled free. That one is going to be a handful for momma-cat.

  100. Not That Mike The Other Mike says:

@Crystal: That’s how it looked to me, too. I also noticed that the second kitten didn’t cry for the mother cat the way the first kitten did. If the second kitten was in any distress at all, we would likely have heard it mewing.

  101. I don’t think I would interfere with kittens with their mom nearby. wacky things happen to kitties all the time and they live, and I feel like interfering with the mom/kitty dichotomy could be more damaging than one of the kitties falling a small distance (not to mention my face when moms goes nuts and attacks me for messing with her kids lol).

that being said, this vid reminds me of one particularly icy walk to the mall, in which my friends slid slowwwwwwly down the driveway holding onto each other for dear life. :) in summary, I liked it

  102. KathleenB says:

victoreia: The in-laws had a cat who was just wild to get into Hubby’s bedroom (he had a waterbed). She would set herself up in the living room and make a straight run down the hall and into the bedroom door. The she’d mew piteously and scratch the door. When that didn’t work, she’d throw herself down the hall into the door. Again. And again. lather, rinse, repeat. All night. There was a reason I renamed her Nuisance.

  103. Calliope says:

Very cute. I agree, the kittens don’t seem terrified. That high-pitched mewing is a common kitten sound, and it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re distressed. When my two kittens were little, they would fall off the bed in the middle of wrestling or playing with a toy, and it didn’t phase them a bit. (My cats now have a bad habit of sprinting toward the closet door as I step through it and close it behind me, so they’ve sometimes collided with my foot when I couldn’t see them coming. Again, they don’t act at all hurt.) Cats are resilient.

  104. forsakenbeast says:

Jeebus! What’s with all the nuffers here lately? It’s not like this is Ogrish material here. We’re not seeking kittens in microwave ovens, or dogs getting zapped while munching on wires. These must be the same people that think Tom and Jerry or Bugs Bunny is too violent for youngsters.

  105. Maybe the nuffers have never lived with kittens. I have, and they make those ear-piercing cries all the time, sometimes even for a reason. Mom leaves the box: There’s a volley of loud anguished cries that will break your heart, until they fall asleep in the middle. Two kittens will try to kill each other, resulting in more cries. I too have seen kittens run full-tilt into a wall, bounce off, get up, and walk away.

What keels me about this video are the quivering little triangular tails, and both kittens going “Wheee mom look at me!” as they get away yet again. You can almost hear the mom sighing as she skooches junior up the slide for probably the 80th time that day.

  106. kibblenibble says:

And on a completely different note: Doncha love it when kittens are at this pointy tailio stage? I do! :-)

  107. kibblenibble says:

    OMG feezie, jinx! :-)

  108. Daphne Moss says:

Love this video; watched it three times now.
Even without the MANY TIMES clarified disclaimer that the owner of the mom and babies is a loving and caring person, it’s evident that the mom-cat is well fed, clean and obviously loved.
Yes, baby cats could be in harm if this were the wild, and the little second one didn’t have a way back to the “nest” BUT THAT”S NOT THE CASE. So just enjoy the soft floppy fuzzo at the end…
Did all the kittens get good homes?

  109. Oh here we are with a great commentroversy over kitties and all I have to say is “Where is Theo when you need him?!” NTMTOM, please start inserting snarky comments and eye-roll emoticons, please! That will make this complete.

@Theresa, yeay for you! If anyone has Cute Cred, it’s you. :)

  110. I know i shouldnt even comment to all the nuffers, but REALLY! Just because a kitten is meowing doesnt mean its yelling for help. A 6 inch drop is not going to hurt the kitten. People really need to chill out.

  111. Their little white paws are just too adorable for words. Love this!

  112. Space Cowgirl says:

I’m jealous of the not one, but TWO Tuxie kittens with socks and ruffs. Mom looks very much like my downstairs neighbour’s cat Moo. Video is unbearably adorable and funny. This site does such wonderful things for my hormones, blood pressure, and depression.

  113. Tigerkid says:

I have to say, having been around kittens many times in my life, the mewing was distressing to me merely because of its frequency. To paraphrase one of the earlier commentors: “and sometimes, they do that for a reason”. Clearly it was just a case of the kitten having a little freak out and wanting attention from Mom.

I thought this video was hilarious though it did worry my two cats. Not because of the “distress” of the kitten though, simply because they could hear the mewing, but they couldn’t find the other cat. Both of them came over and very thoroughly investigated my laptop to see if they could find the hidden kitty.

  114. hyura wrote: “how does the momma cat not slide down? does she have special grippy paws?”

All cats have grippy paws. Momma cat and and the second kitten have no problem as long as they walk on their toe pads. As soon as the kitten loses its footing, it slides on its belly fur.

  115. Well jeez. I just got a 9 week old kitten, Miss Kitty Fantastico (thank you Joss Whedon) and she is constantly jumping/falling/wedging herself into silly situations. I think the kitties in this video are just adorably fine, peeps.

  116. Such a good mama cat! Love the noise she makes when she picks up her kitten — can just imagine it’s one of those “WHAT did I tell you?!” lectures. Mama’s got her paws full!

  117. wow is that kitty at the end ok he didnt even land on his feet(just something i heard they always do) ! but that is so adorable right when she gets one the other one go down lol.

  118. if i was not watching the video but could hear it and heard the sound of the kitten crying like that , human reaction is to protect and feel upset not laugh??
Alot of mothers give birth to their young in dangerous places and if they get found they get moved …….. common sense you see news stories of it all the time.
She should have moved the mother and kittens not filmed it for fun.

would you have the sound of that poor kitten as a ring tone?? ………… no because its NOT funny

  119. Mod-in-Training says:

    [eek!

why didn't anyone suggest running up the slide and yelling at mommy to quit biting kittehs?!
