mammals! with duck bills! that lay eggs! and are poisonous! AND have electroreception! WHAT WILL PLATYPI DO NEXT???!!!
[As a former bio major, I have to make the distinction here... they're somewhat venomous, not poisonous. Amanita mushrooms are poisonous (toxic). - Ed.]
Yes, yes he does. To quote Robin Williams when he was still funny “I’m going to take a beaver, and give it a duck’s bill. It’ll be a mammal, but lay eggs. F@#^ you Darwin!”
Never mind venomous, puggles mainly endanger my life by making it hard for me to breathe between the squeeing. For Darwin’s sake, look at them!!!! The Epitome of Redonk. (A distant relative of the Duke of Earl.)
OMG! I got to touch a stuffed adult platypus once (a deceased former resident of the Sydney Zoo), they are like silk velvet with no nap, rather like a longhaired dachshund with a summer buzz haircut. I cannot even imagine what puggles feel like. AND they make puppy noises? AND they eat crawdads! How much better does it get? It does not! SQUEEE!
the thing that struck me about platypi-ses is how small they are. I always thought they were about as big as a large-ish cat, but no! according to the site I linked to above: “Average platypus size increases with latitude, with the platypuses in north Queensland generally being the smallest where males average about 1 kg. Tasmanian platypus are relatively huge, with some adult males weighing up to 3 kg.”
kzgz, I don’t know where the stuffed platypus I saw came from origionally, but the body was about the size of my shoe or a bit smaller so think of it as about an American ladies size 8. Or about the size of my dachshund when I brought her home at the age of 8 weeks and 3 days. Only Ruby was cuter than an adult platypus. Hard to believe, but true, she was.
so you say,
the size of the platitude increases with latitude?
and they hatch from the eggs, and have knobbular legs?
and velvety coats and electrified snoots?
and they cronche on the crays in their platified ways?
it’s revelatory wonder that the kiwis down under
don’t make a bigger fuss about the plaaaaaa-tiiiiiiii—pus!
I think it is only the males that are venomous, and only on their hind legs. They call the venom claws “spurs”. Which just gives me weird mental images.
“ducks moles Shar Peis otters” .. Yeah. What Prongs said. And WOW. I had to look at this pic several times before the relative sizes of hands and platypi really sank in.
Lookit the chubbular…..fuzzy headed….gah! sputter sputter Lookit thems feets! lookit the wee duck bill….they WHUT? Electro-whut??! Can has venomous back claws??!
Is anyone old enough to remember the commercial for zoo books? “The duck-billed platypus, has feet like a duck but is furry!” LOL They are seriously overloaded on the cute though.

Platy-paws!
Careful: Platypi have strong poison.
[Not on purpose, though. It's usually a spur-of-the-moment thing. - Ed.]
I want them!!!!!! !~~ADORABLE~~!
Heehee, adorbs! They look very soft too. I have a feeling Teresa is gonna say they’re skinkin’…
That’s “stinkin”. *facepalm*
also comes in cherry-vanilla-tusked platypus and pineapple-coconut-winged platypus
I wonder what kind of noises they would make?
STINKIN’ indeed!
Ornithorhynchus anatinus!
Looks like they have peach fuzz. Cute little guys.
LOVE the Kevin Smith reference.
I’m one-uppin’ ya, Prongs: God has a sense of humor…look at the human being.
I want to call them both George.

And I am sure to the platypus we humans look odd.
Don’t just a platypus by its duckbill, I say.
okay, they’re venomous. semantics, sheesh
I want to snuzzle the velvety chubbness, venom or no venom. And I want to name one Perry.
THOSE adorable little missing links are venomous??? Aw heck… I’d adopt one otherwise!! I’m now offishally in SQUEE mode.
Reminds me of when I assemble something and have leftover parts. Always wondered what I could make of them
lisa,
wee noisies
if any
also comes in venomous-electrified-velvet platypus and chocolate-strawberry-shag platypus
Lisa: they make a small croaking sound, which is kind of between a puppy-growl and a cat purring. WikiAnswers describes it as a puppy sound too: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_sound_does_a_platypus_make
Okay I can not get over the velvety fur even on his little bill!
It is like otter fur only really short and thick and luxurious!!!!Yes I am jealous. I want to Touche them!!!!!
A baby platypus is called a puggle! No kidding – even their names are adorable.
@ Blair LOL
You can’t blame them for being venomous – they have little claws, but basically what else are they doing to do – gum you to death?
Here is a great link that also has a sound recording near the bottom of the page: http://www.dpiw.tas.gov.au/inter.nsf/WebPages/BHAN-53573T?open
Okay op[ps there is no fuzzy fur on his bill…. eeep!!! I plead overcome by the cute!
Beak chub!
Terry Pratchett says that the platypus is a duck designed by committee!
looks like a duck and a shar pei had babies together, they are so cute!
My god 260Okley is stuck and can’t come up with a pun? WOW mark the date on the calender, the master has been bested!
Who gets the credit the platypus or Prong?
Nice quote.
Yes, yes he does. To quote Robin Williams when he was still funny “I’m going to take a beaver, and give it a duck’s bill. It’ll be a mammal, but lay eggs. F@#^ you Darwin!”
Blorpitudiness! With duck bills!
I love the sound recording!. Grrrrugugugg!!!
Whoa~~~~~~~~~~~
The itsyest platypi evur!! *bonk* OW! That was me trying to snorgle the screen.
Chocolate velvet blorp. It’s a delicacy on 4 continents.
@Theresa – now I have a Mr. Rogers earworm.
@Mika
Yup, no puns for this one. Just platytudes.
Never mind venomous, puggles mainly endanger my life by making it hard for me to breathe between the squeeing. For Darwin’s sake, look at them!!!! The Epitome of Redonk. (A distant relative of the Duke of Earl.)
@260Oakley, I knew you wouldn’t let us down.
260 Oakley, you redeemed yourself!
@ marthava: Yesh, ’tis so troo…..
(I’m also glad that God haz a sense of humor,
or I don’t think I would be here, myself………!!!)
YAY! I want to hear the puggles purrowl!
OMG! I got to touch a stuffed adult platypus once (a deceased former resident of the Sydney Zoo), they are like silk velvet with no nap, rather like a longhaired dachshund with a summer buzz haircut. kzgz, I just sent the platycall to my phone. I know have a platypus telling me when I get a text message.
I never knew bebbeh platypus were so cute! I must have one right now!
Just stay away from the poison spine.
These little guys hatched out of eggs, like ducklings??!! I would like to see footage of that! How long does mama incubate them?
A year ago or so, Meg posted a platypus picture labeled “velvety platypi” I have used “velvetyplatypi” as a password ever since!
Glad to see some more velvety platypi represented here!
[I do hope you changed it before you posted it, though.
- Ed.]
Too cute!
Hahaha I love the names you picked out for them.
Kevin Smith quote FTW.
I have never seen baby platypi before, and… and…
OMG THEY ARE ADORABUHLS. *squees*
Barbarita: Noooo, I believe they hatched out of eggs, like lizards. Though I could be mistaken.
@Gizmo, I am a mother, albeit not to platipi, yet I’m relieved; I am allowed to love ‘em.
*Shrieks* “Feeties”.
*Thud*

@ Deckard Canine: But they’re not orange.
omfg they are sooooo CUTE!!!
A Platypus is not a catty puss
and thatypus is that.
I’d venture to add another animal to the already convoluted Platypus…
I’m seeing some bunn-tacular levels of dissaproving from these guys.
@Smalls: Phineas and Ferb FTW!
CUTE NAMEZ!!!!!!
kzgz,

The males have venom in their back claws. The way they hunt is actually very viscous. cute but deadly.
I think it is only the males that are venomous, and only on their hind legs. They call the venom claws “spurs”. Which just gives me weird mental images.
“ducks moles Shar Peis otters” .. Yeah. What Prongs said. And WOW. I had to look at this pic several times before the relative sizes of hands and platypi really sank in.
holy monkey. *ded*
Platties are a big hit! Everybody is excited about them!
Lookit the chubbular…..fuzzy headed….gah! sputter sputter Lookit thems feets! lookit the wee duck bill….they WHUT? Electro-whut??! Can has venomous back claws??!
I just, gawww! (speechless)
PS “F_ you, Darwin!” LOL!
That teensy back foot spells out “ehn!” in the wrinkles.
Is anyone old enough to remember the commercial for zoo books? “The duck-billed platypus, has feet like a duck but is furry!” LOL They are seriously overloaded on the cute though.
They’re so WEE! And so friggin precious! And… the one on the left really does look like some Shar Pei got into the bloodline.
Squeeeee! That is ADORABLE!
Plus it’s so extremely impossible to see a platypus in the wild, let alone a baby platypus, so it’s extra special.
Is it strange that this extremely unique animal was my favourite as a child? It lays eggs, yo.
so THATS what platypuses look like!
Awww they finally made it on to CO! Love, love, love them! I sent this in months ago… I must not be sending to the right email or something.
Its not god, its evolution!
Smorgasbord?
http://www.squidoo.com/swedishsmorgasbord
