10 Deckard Canine 04.06.10 at 7:25 am

Careful: Platypi have strong poison.

[Not on purpose, though. It's usually a spur-of-the-moment thing. - Ed.]

11 Manx 04.06.10 at 7:27 am

12 Babs 04.06.10 at 7:30 am

*BEEP*

25 jen 04.06.10 at 8:11 am

ack! too cute!! eeep!!!

26 photogirl 04.06.10 at 8:15 am

any pics of platypus tocks ???

27 sneezy 04.06.10 at 8:25 am

mammals! with duck bills! that lay eggs! and are poisonous! AND have electroreception! WHAT WILL PLATYPI DO NEXT???!!!

[As a former bio major, I have to make the distinction here... they're somewhat venomous, not poisonous. Amanita mushrooms are poisonous (toxic). 8) - Ed.]

28 J. 04.06.10 at 8:30 am

And I am sure to the platypus we humans look odd.

Don’t just a platypus by its duckbill, I say.

29 sneezy 04.06.10 at 8:32 am

okay, they’re venomous. semantics, sheesh ;)

30 Smalls 04.06.10 at 8:32 am

I want to snuzzle the velvety chubbness, venom or no venom. And I want to name one Perry.

31 Debbe 04.06.10 at 8:39 am

THOSE adorable little missing links are venomous??? Aw heck… I’d adopt one otherwise!! I’m now offishally in SQUEE mode.

32 Momcat 04.06.10 at 8:39 am

Reminds me of when I assemble something and have leftover parts. Always wondered what I could make of them

33 blair 04.06.10 at 8:46 am

lisa,

wee noisies

if any

34 blair 04.06.10 at 8:48 am

also comes in venomous-electrified-velvet platypus and chocolate-strawberry-shag platypus

35 doomchild 04.06.10 at 8:54 am

Lisa: they make a small croaking sound, which is kind of between a puppy-growl and a cat purring. WikiAnswers describes it as a puppy sound too: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_sound_does_a_platypus_make

36 KittyAdventures 04.06.10 at 9:03 am

Okay I can not get over the velvety fur even on his little bill!

It is like otter fur only really short and thick and luxurious!!!!Yes I am jealous. I want to Touche them!!!!!

37 Alexes 04.06.10 at 9:03 am

A baby platypus is called a puggle! No kidding – even their names are adorable.

38 KittyAdventures 04.06.10 at 9:03 am

@ Blair LOL

39 kzgz 04.06.10 at 9:23 am

You can’t blame them for being venomous – they have little claws, but basically what else are they doing to do – gum you to death?

Here is a great link that also has a sound recording near the bottom of the page: http://www.dpiw.tas.gov.au/inter.nsf/WebPages/BHAN-53573T?open

40 KittyAdventures 04.06.10 at 9:24 am

Okay op[ps there is no fuzzy fur on his bill…. eeep!!! I plead overcome by the cute!

41 occula 04.06.10 at 9:34 am

Beak chub!

42 Laura 04.06.10 at 9:34 am

Terry Pratchett says that the platypus is a duck designed by committee!

43 julie 04.06.10 at 9:40 am

looks like a duck and a shar pei had babies together, they are so cute!

44 Mika 04.06.10 at 9:41 am

My god 260Okley is stuck and can’t come up with a pun? WOW mark the date on the calender, the master has been bested!

Who gets the credit the platypus or Prong?

45 Felipe Tanus 04.06.10 at 9:49 am

Nice quote.

46 wuyizidi 04.06.10 at 9:52 am

Yes, yes he does. To quote Robin Williams when he was still funny “I’m going to take a beaver, and give it a duck’s bill. It’ll be a mammal, but lay eggs. F@#^ you Darwin!”

47 jujube 04.06.10 at 9:52 am

Blorpitudiness! With duck bills!

48 Rebecca 04.06.10 at 9:55 am

I love the sound recording!. Grrrrugugugg!!!

49 Trixie 04.06.10 at 10:08 am

50 whiskers 04.06.10 at 10:16 am

The itsyest platypi evur!! *bonk* OW! That was me trying to snorgle the screen.

51 MandyMo 04.06.10 at 10:23 am

Chocolate velvet blorp. It’s a delicacy on 4 continents.

52 BB/VA 04.06.10 at 10:26 am

@Theresa – now I have a Mr. Rogers earworm.

53 260Oakley 04.06.10 at 10:42 am

@Mika
Yup, no puns for this one. Just platytudes.

54 Bryn 04.06.10 at 10:44 am

Never mind venomous, puggles mainly endanger my life by making it hard for me to breathe between the squeeing. For Darwin’s sake, look at them!!!! The Epitome of Redonk. (A distant relative of the Duke of Earl.)

55 Theresa 04.06.10 at 10:49 am

@260Oakley, I knew you wouldn’t let us down. :)

56 Beth 04.06.10 at 10:50 am

260 Oakley, you redeemed yourself!

57 cheshirekittehkat 04.06.10 at 11:03 am

@ marthava: Yesh, ’tis so troo…..
(I’m also glad that God haz a sense of humor,
or I don’t think I would be here, myself………!!!)

58 Lisa 04.06.10 at 11:05 am

YAY! I want to hear the puggles purrowl!

59 Colonel Jenna 04.06.10 at 11:28 am

OMG! I got to touch a stuffed adult platypus once (a deceased former resident of the Sydney Zoo), they are like silk velvet with no nap, rather like a longhaired dachshund with a summer buzz haircut. I cannot even imagine what puggles feel like. AND they make puppy noises? AND they eat crawdads! How much better does it get? It does not! SQUEEE!

60 kzgz 04.06.10 at 11:34 am

the thing that struck me about platypi-ses is how small they are. I always thought they were about as big as a large-ish cat, but no! according to the site I linked to above: “Average platypus size increases with latitude, with the platypuses in north Queensland generally being the smallest where males average about 1 kg. Tasmanian platypus are relatively huge, with some adult males weighing up to 3 kg.”

61 corianne 04.06.10 at 11:39 am

kzgz, I just sent the platycall to my phone. I know have a platypus telling me when I get a text message.

I never knew bebbeh platypus were so cute! I must have one right now!

62 Guido 04.06.10 at 11:49 am

Just stay away from the poison spine.

63 Barbarita 04.06.10 at 11:53 am

These little guys hatched out of eggs, like ducklings??!! I would like to see footage of that! How long does mama incubate them?

64 Mouse D'Anon 04.06.10 at 12:15 pm

A year ago or so, Meg posted a platypus picture labeled “velvety platypi” I have used “velvetyplatypi” as a password ever since!

Glad to see some more velvety platypi represented here!

[I do hope you changed it before you posted it, though. - Ed.]

65 Katrina 04.06.10 at 12:37 pm

Too cute!

66 Arthi 04.06.10 at 1:00 pm

Hahaha I love the names you picked out for them.

67 junemrc 04.06.10 at 1:06 pm

Kevin Smith quote FTW. :)

68 Melissa 04.06.10 at 1:16 pm

I have never seen baby platypi before, and… and…

OMG THEY ARE ADORABUHLS. *squees*

69 ShinyHappyGoth 04.06.10 at 1:17 pm

Barbarita: Noooo, I believe they hatched out of eggs, like lizards. Though I could be mistaken.

70 bookmonstercats 04.06.10 at 1:21 pm

@Gizmo, I am a mother, albeit not to platipi, yet I’m relieved; I am allowed to love ‘em.

*Shrieks* “Feeties”.

*Thud*

71 Colonel Jenna 04.06.10 at 1:57 pm

kzgz, I don’t know where the stuffed platypus I saw came from origionally, but the body was about the size of my shoe or a bit smaller so think of it as about an American ladies size 8. Or about the size of my dachshund when I brought her home at the age of 8 weeks and 3 days. Only Ruby was cuter than an adult platypus. Hard to believe, but true, she was.

72 Jen8 04.06.10 at 3:44 pm

@ Deckard Canine: But they’re not orange.

73 Holly 04.06.10 at 4:55 pm

omfg they are sooooo CUTE!!!

74 Hon Glad 04.06.10 at 5:28 pm

A Platypus is not a catty puss
and thatypus is that.

75 Killer Klown 04.06.10 at 7:21 pm

I’d venture to add another animal to the already convoluted Platypus…
I’m seeing some bunn-tacular levels of dissaproving from these guys.

76 Karen 04.06.10 at 7:28 pm

@Smalls: Phineas and Ferb FTW!

77 Squez Mommy 04.06.10 at 7:49 pm

CUTE NAMEZ!!!!!!

78 blair 04.06.10 at 10:06 pm

kzgz,

so you say,
the size of the platitude increases with latitude?
and they hatch from the eggs, and have knobbular legs?
and velvety coats and electrified snoots?
and they cronche on the crays in their platified ways?
it’s revelatory wonder that the kiwis down under
don’t make a bigger fuss about the plaaaaaa-tiiiiiiii—pus!

79 Heather 04.06.10 at 10:27 pm

The males have venom in their back claws. The way they hunt is actually very viscous. cute but deadly.

80 Alexes 04.07.10 at 3:03 am

I think it is only the males that are venomous, and only on their hind legs. They call the venom claws “spurs”. Which just gives me weird mental images.

81 BStrange 04.07.10 at 4:44 am

“ducks moles Shar Peis otters” .. Yeah. What Prongs said. And WOW. I had to look at this pic several times before the relative sizes of hands and platypi really sank in.

82 kellie 04.07.10 at 8:38 am

holy monkey. *ded*

83 January 04.07.10 at 9:13 am

Platties are a big hit! Everybody is excited about them!

84 Paunchie 04.07.10 at 1:50 pm

PS “F_ you, Darwin!” LOL!

85 Esri Rose 04.07.10 at 7:55 pm

That teensy back foot spells out “ehn!” in the wrinkles.

86 Taranormal 04.07.10 at 8:39 pm

Is anyone old enough to remember the commercial for zoo books? “The duck-billed platypus, has feet like a duck but is furry!” LOL They are seriously overloaded on the cute though.

87 Tindi 04.08.10 at 12:26 am

They’re so WEE! And so friggin precious! And… the one on the left really does look like some Shar Pei got into the bloodline. :P

88 Procrastinateher 04.08.10 at 3:52 pm

Squeeeee! That is ADORABLE!

Plus it’s so extremely impossible to see a platypus in the wild, let alone a baby platypus, so it’s extra special.

Is it strange that this extremely unique animal was my favourite as a child? It lays eggs, yo.

89 Katherine =D 04.08.10 at 8:05 pm

so THATS what platypuses look like!

90 Melinda (not that M, another M) 04.08.10 at 8:26 pm

Awww they finally made it on to CO! Love, love, love them! I sent this in months ago… I must not be sending to the right email or something.

91 The kins 04.09.10 at 3:49 am

Its not god, its evolution!

92 M Einarsson 04.09.10 at 9:32 am
93 zekenzoey 04.10.10 at 12:25 am
