Evolved Kitteh laughs at your opposable thumbs

Your ability to grasp tools is cool. But this kitteh’s ability to use his hind parts while staring at birds to THIS JAUNTY SONG* is waaay cooler.

Standing ovation goes to Ant for another Quality Foraged Link. *Update: The song is “Cats on Mars” track 6 on Cowboy Bebop by Yoko Kanno

Another 73 billion years of evolution, and cats will be ready to participate in Dancing with the Stars…. Although they may prefer not to, and I wouldn’t hold that against them.

  10. whiskers says:

    Kitteh-zilla!

  11. Jessica says:

I can’t stand on the back of my couch for that long. :(

  12. Reed says:

Okay, so why is this video not portraying this cat using its new bipedal skills to open up and deliver a can of tuna to the humans? Walking on two legs comes with certain privileges and responsibilities, you know…

  13. Theresa says:

@260Oakley, you are covered with awesome sauce.

  14. Mek says:

@Reed — “deliver a can of tuna to the humans” — I can believe that this kitteh could learn to open a can of tuna (given her awesome bipedal ability), but that tuna would be taken as far AWAY from the hooomans as possible!

At least if it was *MY* kitteh, that is how it would go down!

  15. wuyizidi says:

So human-like, almost made me believe in reincarnation.

  16. marthava says:

    This is redonkulous.

  17. hyura says:

and the kitty has a cute face, too. i love it when it raises one of its front paws in slight excitation…and then returns to normal position.

  18. debg says:

Was I expecting too much? I wanted it to dance like the cockatoo!

  19. sunnymum says:

    Meerkat cat? Fantabulous balancing skills!

  20. O NO (he/she/or it) DI'UNT!!!!! says:

if we adapt the Darwinian Theories…eventually the offspring from this feline will have no forearms/ front paws. They surely don’t seem to be of much use to him/ her!!!!

  21. Amanda says:

That cat has far, far better balance than I do.

  22. O NO (he/she/or it) DI'UNT!!!!! says:

BTW: le francais ici se traduit:

  29. Sweeda88 says:

  30. Melinda says:

I showed this to my cat and asked him if he could do that. He can’t.

  31. Meg says:

  32. Mika says:

I was reminded of The Cat from Red Dwarf :-)

  33. This cat can stand up your argument is invalid.

  35. Noturus says:

HaHa! Amazing muscular strength in this cat.

  36. corianne says:

I’m impressed with the vidographer’s ability to go 47 whole seconds without burying his/her face in that perfect plump kitteh belleh.

  43. Julie says:

Anyone know which song that is? So cute, I must have it.

  44. Everett says:

I don’t know which is freaking me out more: the music or the cat’s amazing ability to concentrate those eyes on its subject AND balance on those hind legs….

  45. Edie73 says:

cute meowzer but the decor in the apartment depresses the hell out of me…blue ultra-suede couch and a crummy game poster…must be a dude.

  46. Freya says:

He needs a wee waistcoat and a monocle.

  47. JohnnieCanuck says:

Someone needs to re-forge that first link. So who could have guessed that CO would have a cute 404 error page?

  48. Suzanne says:

@Julie, The song is called Cats On Mars, which is originally composed by Yoko Kanno for the anime series Cowboy Bebop.

Amazing kitty. Makes me want to train my future cats to do this as well. Somehow.

  49. Shana says:

    So cute!!

  50. Meg says:

    Link fixed!

As @Suzanne says, the track is called “Cats on Mars.” It’s by Yoko Kanno, and is featured as track 6 on the album Cowboy Bebop.

  51. Hon Glad says:

Sorry kitty, you can’t have a part in Meerkat Manor.

  52. laura says:

    Small kitty gentleman!

  53. vacuumslayer says:

That cat is crazy cute. What a pretty face.

  54. prinbsn says:

Amazing – but what I really hate is that this cat has better posture than I do!!!

  55. AuntieMame says:

    Blink, kitteh, blink!

  56. puddlepeppers says:

Yeah, what Suzanne and Meg said.

  57. JediArashi says:

I LOVE this video! And the awesome Cowboy Bebop song makes it even better.

  58. whatiwore says:

    Wow, that’s pretty much amazing-adorable.

  59. kibblenibble says:

I’m dying to know….WHAT is kitteh staring at so intently? ☺

  60. gizmo says:

OK, so you can stand and walk. Now go get me a beer!

  61. drea says:

I don’t know about anyone else, but I MUST see whatever the hell the cat was looking at!

  62. julzski77 says:

Is this the cat equivalent of a yoga headstand?! That kitteh is definitely having an out of body mind meld with something!

  63. gadget says:

    hahaha…. nice… I like it

  64. meggi says:

i wish my kitteh could do this!

  65. Queen of Dork says:

Kitty seems to be imitating a prairie dog.

  66. Mouse D'Anon says:

Just saw this on D-Listed too. I just love the CO / D-Listed crossover! Two of my favorite websites!

  67. Linda says:

PRETTY COOL, CONSIDERING HE’S A **MERE CAT** Har har har.

  68. Teresa says:

WOW 8O That is one well balanced kitty 8O

  69. Flutterby says:

    BwaaaHaaaHa Linda – good one!

  70. jen says:

that is hilarious and awesome! kittehs are taking over!

  71. LisaL says:

Hilarious. Love that little hesitant paw up at around 27sec lol.

  72. nismo says:

Yes! I love that little paw action at around 0:30. Such a cute cat.

  73. Miki says:

    @Linda that was genius.

  74. Arachnophile says:

DANG! I can’t even stand upright that long without some kind of klutziness happening. :)

  75. That song may in fact contain coded messages for cats from Mars, because both of my alien cats came running in from another room to listen intently. This worries me. What is the mothership telling them to do?

  76. Flavia A. says:

    Roflmao.

    Impressive.

  77. Rapwnzel says:

Hilarious! I am going to spread this like wildfire on facebook.

  78. Mary (the first) says:

Ok, you just KNOW that kitteh has done that many, many times and therefore has had lots of practice balancing on his/her hind legs. Still pretty impressive, though! (And I agree with whoever was impressed by the cameraperson for not succumbing to the temptation of the plump kitteh tummy!)

  79. That´s hilarious.

  80. Alice says:

I saw this yesterday and was going to send it in, but I thought “What the hell, three million people will have beaten me to it”. And I was right!

This is a classic. Something tells me that Perfect Posture Kitteh got that way by walking about with a book balanced on his little ginger head.

  81. paulajeanne says:

Well? What was he looking at? Gotta know!

  82. Wolfie says:

    WOW!!!!!

  83. Kathy says:

    I am in awe.

  84. Momcat says:

That was one great clip. And the music…wow, my ancient cat almost opened an eye! I’d love to have the ringtone, but that is one expensive album and at my age I’d forget what it was before it came in “one to two months.”

  85. Sonam Lhadon says:

Have some compassion and please get this poor kitty one of those Cat Window Seats, or move a piece of furniture over to the window, so he doesn’t have to do this each time. It can’t be good for his back or hips.

  86. Allie says:

I love how kitteh lifts his paw at 0:30.

  87. Roketto says:

    Yeeeee! Cowboy Bebop music!

This cat looks to be almost as intelligent as Ein the Corgi. :D

Maybe he’s the mascot for the non-existent next season of Cowboy Bebop?

I love that series, & the music was the best part.

  88. CJ says:

This sort of freaked me out. My dog used to be able to do that but he was a bichon and they’re known for being circus-y.

Very cute though. I wonder if he can run just on his hind paws.

  89. Cindy says:

I suggest everyone write a comment on the owner’s You Tube page asking him to make sure the cat has a comfortable viewing area at the window. This video is very cute, but the cat is straining to be able to see outside. The owner now says he moved a desk up to the window but is thinking of removing it to force the cat to stand for more videos.
That poor animal will get very depressed if he has nothing to look at in life except a Grand Theft Auto poster.

[So, this is the issue you've chosen to champion? Really? - Ed.]

  90. Paunchie says:

“Dammit Carl! How hard is it to hold yourself upright??”

  91. tinydancer98 says:

I have been reading here in the shadows for a super long time, and adore this site! However it took quite possibly the most adorkable kitty Standing Up with Cowboy Bebop music to get me to comment and say WELL DONE. This made my little day : D

  92. slywlf says:

Aw! So intent, this kitteh is! I iz impressed!
My 3 Boyz are able to lounge at their leisure to bird-watch because I put a dresser under the best window with cozy cat beds on top, but then I am, after all, a mere cat slave ;-)

  93. Kitteh is lost in reverie: let’s have a listen;
…..”oh, wow, there’s the Patterson’s Corgi, digging up the yard again….
and the Palmers’ think their bird-feeder is squirrel-proof;….. heh, heh: it isn’t…..!
the Richardsons’ Marmie is sitting on top of their birdhouse, just waiting…..
boy o boy, that mailman can really run fast when the Rottweiler chases him…..
I hope the Smiths’ don’t get too excited after that rabbit finishes chewing up their flowers……. O.o….. dinnertime….. gotta go naow…..”

  94. Steph says:

I think that the Japanese are breeding cats to be optionally bipedal because it makes them resemble anime cartoon characters.

[They're also breeding them to pilot Gundams, I heard - Ed.]

  95. Creepy Sheep says:

That’s actually been my ringtone for a while, and I love it. It just gave me quite a shock though:
I couldn’t sleep, so I came for a dose of cute in the wee small hours, and – Who the hell is calling me at this time?!?!?!!
It took a few moments to work it out…

  96. RJ says:

That’s an awesome cat. Mine would just tip over trying to do that.

  97. kronos says:

He’s like a little Rory Calhoun!

  98. mfar says:

Cat Slave! That’s absolutely perfect – and true of most of us cat owners.

  99. DeAnna says:

Looks like he’s about to point and say, “WTF?” lol

  100. Paunchie says:

    “meercat slave” *snerk*

  101. slycat says:

Has anyone ever seen The Cat Returns (the anime film from Miyazaki’s studio)? My daughter loves it – filled with kittehs doin’ just this sorta think.

  102. Bailey says:

The paw up part looks like someone is telling him “enough already” and he saying “o.k., o.k., just a minute”. lolol cute as a button (or cuter).

  103. pitkat says:

Awww, look at him – he’s waving.

In an odd sort of way, this is a little creepy ’cause he’s just standing so perfectly straight and staring. But all is fixed with the wonders of Cowboy Beebop. Awesomeness.

  104. pitkat says:

I just a great version of this via youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZy2I8csVQU

    Enjoy!

  105. Kirsty says:

    This is so cute!
I think he might be looking at birds outside because in the video without music you can hear birds.
