Hmm, if that cat’s actually opening its mouth, then it’s probably feeling a bit hot, or smelling something strange. Looked maybe as though it might be panting.
Eep! This actually freaked me out! It reminded me of the part in “The Grudge” where the little boy first makes his appearance by opening his mouth wide and yowling like a cat!! I could hear that noise in my head watching this kitteh. I SCARED.
I’m leaving thanks to amikit as well. I was really weirded out by this, but now that I know its an optical illusion because of the kitty’s fur, its one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.
It kinda freaks me out. Reminds me of the ‘actual footage’ scenes in the movie The Fourth Kind where their mouths/jaws open up all wide and get all creepy.
It’s not the fur on his chin you can see the tongue moving inside it’s mouth.
And it doesn’t have a cold and has to breathe through its mouth, this I know for a fact having had 7 cats with colds as in upper respiratory infections AT THE SAME TIME.
The latest rescue having infected all the others, had to force feed 3 older ones with a syringe for 2 weeks. So no it does not have a cold, it’s just doing an exagerated version of the Flehman response.

I was totally reminded of The Grudge while watching this video! That was the very first thought I had! This cat creeps me out, lol. I don’t buy the illusion explanation that some people have suggested. You can see it *opening* its mouth.
My tabby does that when he is getting ready to pounce on one of the other two. He gets in pounce posishe and opens his mouth for a few seconds in prepration for chomping on one of the other cats.

Not sure what to make of this. The Flehmen Response does not last quite so long and is not quite so dramatic, at least in my cats. Does not quite look like chin fur, either. What it most reminds me of is a poor old kitty I had years ago who had a stroke and could not close his jaw. But this is a young cat, and it does not appear to be in any distress.
This brought back memories…my sweet kitty used to give us this look EVERY SINGLE TIME she sniffed anyone’s toes. (Like Trixie’s cat at post 32!) We called it her “dumb look,” and it cracked us up every time. We saw something on TV about the Flehmen response and gave her a little slack after that, but it was still funny.
I think it looks as if the cat wanted to yawn and then forgot he was yawning in the process!
Don’t you cat owners know this? When your cat does something like clean itself and it is in a real odd position with its legs up and then something else catches their attention and they look at it and forget to put their leg down for a while?

I definitely think it’s just a long Flehmen response – to the person who said it couldn’t be, because their cat never does it that long, my cats definitely do. Usually after they smelled pee on the carpet from another cat (awesome…) I’ve just never been clever enough to bother filming it!!
Looking at the transliteration of the Japanese page linked above, it does seem like the cat owner was worried about this behavior, and posted the video to get some medical advice because the vet was closed. It’s not clear from the site what the result was, other than that the owner was going to take the cat to the hospital the next day. Poor kitty…it definitely changes how I see this video. Wish I knew whether the cat was ok.
