Hoist a tall frosty one — with your cat! Each spring, the quiet German village of Lürkensproingen hosts Bierfest für Katzen, a beer festival for our feline friends. Sample such daring local brews as Wach und Schlief (“Awake and Asleep”), which substitutes catnip for hops in the brewing process.

Schblatz??
Beautiful picture, but the photo link isn’t working…
…and I think that kitty can fit in the glass…
Whyfor does said Kittehn Schproingen have a harness on?
@ Cat Skyfire: I fixed the link to SloshSpot. Thanks for catching that.
This one looks to be starting a little young. Stay away from the beer, little one. I suggest vodka.
Bartender, just put this one on my tabby.

The Catnip Plant – A Short History
Throughout history, a catnip plant has intrigued a cat somewhere. For some 2000+ years, all through China and then into Europe, this multi-use herb from the mint family has been used in countless drinks, remedies, witchcraft and kitty. In ancient Egypt, for example, the catnip plant was sacred to the Cat Goddess, Bast. Traditional herbalists in the ancient world right up to present day health stores dabble in the healing properties of the catnip plant. The first recorded use of catnip was made by JD Tourenfort, an English herbalist of the 17th century. This versatile herb was commonly used to make catnip tea, and is even said to repel insects, such as mosquitoes, cockroaches and some types of flies. Surprisingly, the catnip plant was used to flavor beer since it was cheaper than hops. It’s not a wonder, with all this going for it, that cats took this plant under their wing and decided to nourish it’s growth across the US as well!
So some feline owner brewer could make it true
Beer belly
I honestly believed there was a Bierfest fuer Katzen, and I was going to go, until I could not find any mention of it on Google
Disappointed.
i can’t tell if this is for real or not…
Dear Cashew:
Our cat wears a harness when he goes outside on his leash.
kitty may have already knocked back a couple…
The kids look a little young to be drinking too.
Now to teach said kitten to clasp his paws gently around the beer so he can bring the beer to human with a clever harness-hoist mechanism.
Just stay away from the funnels leettle one…
Skol!
Sam Meow-dams.
so precious!! cute little harness too.
@samj – Don’t feel bad, for a second or two I was taken in until I saw that it takes place in “Lürkensproingen”.
Cats and beer! Cats and beer! CATS AND BEER!
Sorry, I’m okay. It’s just that “these are a few of my favorite things.”
Yeah, I got fooled, too but I’m really gullible! NOMTOM, you would KILL at the game Balderdash! I want you on my team!!
@ samjholmes & pounce: I, too, totally believed there was such a fest, probably to be looked up on the Travel Channel…..
NOMTOM, you are a caution, and also, teh funnee…….!
Right now I could use a beer and a tabby. the perfect end to a stressful day.
@mooseb, your cat walks on a leash??! thats awesome! I’ve only seen kittens doing that, I assumed thats because they were too young to know better. I’m personally very cat-ignorant. Also, I sense the need for a catwalk pun in there somewhere..
@mctwin: I think you’re playing it wrong…
Cashew, before Skippy moved in with me he was a completely free-ranging cat. His previous people let him out in all weather at all times of day and night. A while after he decided to come and live with me I realized I couldn’t keep risking letting him out–we lived on a busy main street and there were coyotes around. So I started taking him out with a harness and leash. I can’t say he took to it right away, but before long he was looking forward to his walk every day. When he got too fat for the harness, I took him out with just a collar. Later, when his younger brothers moved in with us, I let them watch Skippy going for his walks and then when I put the collar on them they were fine with it. I used to walk all three of them, one at a time, every day. Eventually this got to be too much for me and I gradually weaned them off the walkies. Now they stay inside, and enjoy open windows, weather permitting.
OMG CUTE OVERLOAD YOU HAVE GONE TOO FAR. THAT KITTEN LOOKS UNDERAGE FOR SURE. >:()
I, too, was mentally booking tickets for next years Bierfest fur Katzen before I realized that it was Not Real.
I think that some keen cutologist should set one up. I’ll come, and I’ll bring Fred-Kitty. I’m sure she likes beer.
I doubt this would pass the German purity laws.
[...but think of the hops!
- Ed.]
*burp*
Wow, that kitteh mush have had a pretty impressive fake ID…
I guess that makes us ALEurophiles?
Brand is good beer though, not actually German but one of mine national glories. In other words it’s Dutch =D
Kitteh is cute. Nothing to worry about also, if he’s truly German (or at least European) he can handle some alcohol, just like his human cuddle machines… =D
Lurkensproingen! *SNERK* Wouldn’t you LUUUUURVE to live in a town called Lurkensproingen?!?
[Ha. Imagine it as a military base. Ft. Lurkenschproingen, just off the Autobahn! - Ed.]
so several weeks ago I was feeling very under the weather and fixed myself a little hot toddy. I set the cup on the floor next to the couch where I was lying and feel asleep only to wake up to the lapping sound of my kitteh boy drinking what was left of my hot toddy. Not sure how much he drank but he sleep for several hours afterward and woke up with the munchies.
Kitteh’s harness accentuates the fluffyplumpness of the kitty in it quite well, I think. Also,
260Oakley claims another victim.
*ded*
I totally fell for it too. I didn’t even see the Lurkensproingen… *looks longingly at both kitteh and beer*
Ein Prosit, Ein Prosit, Ge-mew-li-cheit
Now wait just a minute, I would like to nuff a little. I mean, it is cute and all and surely we do come here for cats’n'stuff but that kitty is CLEARLY too young to be drinking alcohol in public. It will only lead to this kind of thing and before you know it, these kittys will be out on the streets, caterwauling at all hours of the day and night looking for pussy.
The pic was lifted from flickr user redalpha’s photostream. Here’s the original. The pic is legit, the beer fest for cats is not. http://www.flickr.com/photos/49182159@N00/archives/date-taken/2006/05/06/detail/
