Encore (Kinda): Orangutan and Hound

by Not That Mike The Other Mike on November 9, 2009

A while back, Meg featured some orangumazing photos of Suryia and Roscoe, the orangutan and hound-dog buddies.  Now, thanks to sender-inner Marilyn T., you can see the heartwarming story of how they met.  On your mark, get set, awwww!

alas, this is not available to us forriners, apparently. i’m forced to imagine how awesome it must be from the title…*goes to happy place*

2 browngrl 11.09.09 at 5:23 am

Oh noes!
I can’t watch it either.

3 Kanadadianana 11.09.09 at 5:35 am

So who can watch it? I’m in Canada and it says I can’t!

4 gravyboat 11.09.09 at 5:39 am

Um, an ape, a hound, and an elephant? Yeah. When can I move in?

5 goodhoppe 11.09.09 at 5:45 am

Awesome video. They are soooo cute together. I want.

6 kittensnotkids 11.09.09 at 5:55 am

i like when the orangutan falls over backward. I imagine he (or she) has dropped ded of the cuteness of her own story. but I find the chap in this video (“Doc” antler or whatever) a little…..odd.

7 georgina0912 11.09.09 at 5:57 am

Awwww indeed….what a great way to start the week! I love it how Suryia shares all his food with Roscoe. There’s a lot to learn from animules relationships…yeshhh :)

8 Rachael 11.09.09 at 5:59 am

I can die happy now cuz I’ve just seen the sweetest thing on the planet. It made me laugh and cry at the same time. <3

9 Cambridge_Rat_Mom 11.09.09 at 6:10 am

Where is this place located?

10 ceejoe 11.09.09 at 6:13 am

It’s in South Carolina! http://www.suryiaandroscoe.com/index.asp

11 Birdcage 11.09.09 at 6:18 am

Locked out with my fellow Canucks! Time to invade.

12 Joyce Bridges 11.09.09 at 6:23 am

Beautiful, simply beautiful.

13 earlybird1 11.09.09 at 6:23 am

Awww, that made my day. How sweet is that?

14 Katrina 11.09.09 at 6:24 am

OK.

15 Amanda 11.09.09 at 7:04 am

Can I be an orangutan?

16 Cami 11.09.09 at 7:14 am

Oh my! What a wonderful way to start my day!

17 Cindy 11.09.09 at 7:21 am

I love to see the orangutan hugging the doggie!

18 caelus 11.09.09 at 7:22 am

“This video is not available in your country due to copyright restrictions.”

19 Kivrin 11.09.09 at 7:23 am

OMG, the sight of that orangutan somersaulting around with the pupster—what a wonderful way to start the week! I heart you, Cute Overload.

20 Tina 11.09.09 at 7:24 am

I love how he pries the dogs mouth open to put food in it! I never knew a hound that had to force fed before. :D

21 Saddened by imaginary restrictions 11.09.09 at 7:33 am

It’s a sad day when the spread of cuteness is restricted by the imaginary “borders” of the internet. Isn’t the internet supposed to help spread information? Why is it being restricted to a particular country.

*sigh* Youtube has gone the way of Hulu and is now locking us poor Canadians out.

22 Emma 11.09.09 at 7:45 am

Not just Canada, I’m in Hong Kong and I can’t see it as well… =(

23 Madfishmonger 11.09.09 at 8:00 am

Poo on copyright! I wanna see teh qte!

24 LisaL 11.09.09 at 8:04 am

Love orangutans, and videos like that just makes me love them even more. Yay encores!

25 Dustin 11.09.09 at 8:16 am

The cute will not be denied!!

here is a link to view this page with the video working for all us non-Americans, I honestly don`t know why they even bother blocking out foreigners, it takes a grand total of two seconds to overcome.

https://youtubeproxy.org/default.aspx?prx=http://cuteoverload.com/2009/11/09/encore-kinda-orangutan-and-hound/

[Sure, until & unless "they" start blocking your proxy, and/or all traffic on port 443 from (or to) external IPs, or even when the proxy simply can't handle the traffic (like right now). Playing by the rules isn't always a perfect solution, but come on, it's a video clip of a dog and a monkey. - Ed.]

26 Queen of Dork 11.09.09 at 8:18 am

Good for you Dustin! How dare the qte be denied anywhere!?

27 Jill 11.09.09 at 8:24 am

Cute video but that guy is a total tool. The dog obviously isn’t wild and part of a “pack”. I’m sure it’s their dog…looks too well fed and behaved to be a stray. “A worn out hound dog” More like…our beloved German short-haired pointer.

28 Theo 11.09.09 at 8:27 am

…of course, it really *is* a fantastic video clip; that I’ll grant.

29 Queen of Dork 11.09.09 at 8:41 am

Ed: Proxy? Port 443?! External huhs? Sheesh. I didn’t realize stuff was so complicated like that that way.

[It's as complicated as you want to explore, and more. Most folks don't need to worry about 90% of it. - Ed.]

30 kittyadventures 11.09.09 at 8:52 am

Awesome story … And it is an awww moment
IF you go to the link that Ceejo Provided at Comment #10 you get to see their story and a little more information abut the organization handling their care.

Granted it isn’t the National Geographic video but it is awesome.non the less.

And here is the Video at the National Geographic Website Perhaps it will be visible for those in other countries.

Surya and Roscoe

31 Lilitu 11.09.09 at 8:55 am

Jill, I interpreted his ‘hunting pack’ comment to mean that they assumed the dog was a part of some person’s hunting pack and he wandered away.

Either way, super adorable.

32 Hila 11.09.09 at 8:55 am

Thank you for the early week discrimination :( I feel much better now.

33 kittyadventures 11.09.09 at 8:59 am

Lilitu; that is what I thought too..;. and of course the dog looks great now… this is a reenactment and the dog has been getting regular food and care for over two years now. I love how they had an immediate connection.

34 Queen of Dork 11.09.09 at 9:03 am

Peeps: It’s the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street. Is Sesame Street located in New York? (Mr. Crankypants hates me right now for asking this question).

35 ceejoe 11.09.09 at 9:07 am

I don’t usually respond to negative comments. But I volunteer at a county shelter that deals with a LOT of stray animals, and the comment “looks too well fed and behaved to be a stray” is way off base. Just be/c an animal is a stray does NOT mean it’s not well behaved. You can find many wonderful and beautiful animals at a shelter. And shelters can generally use lots of volunteers and donations – most of them operate on a shoestring budget. /stepping down off soapbox now…/

36 Jeff 11.09.09 at 9:15 am

Video is not available in all counties. Bummer :(

37 kittyadventures 11.09.09 at 9:21 am

Jeff try the link I posted at Comment #33

38 Queen of Dork 11.09.09 at 9:21 am

Let’s maybe try to bring this thing to a happier level:

Sunny Day
Sweepin’ the clouds away
On my way to where the air is sweet

Can you tell me how to get,
How to get to Sesame Street?

(yes, I’m a complete and total dork)

39 Szilvia 11.09.09 at 9:27 am

Wow, copyright restrictions over here as well.. I’m in Sweden. Great.

40 yolanda 11.09.09 at 9:50 am

Thanks @dustin, youtubeproxy.org is a great resource, I bought a month to support them.
The video was worth the trouble to view, adorable!

41 lunastar1311 11.09.09 at 9:52 am

Doesn’t this make anyone else think of reincarnation?

Like seriously, these two knew each other in a past life!! I imagine the dog as being the more loyal one and the orangutan as maybe being more of a joker. Maybe they were friends, siblings, or even lovers? Who knows, but it really made me wonder!

42 Rooanne 11.09.09 at 10:12 am

Just goes to show you animuls have more sense(s) than humans.

43 Jess Rainbows 11.09.09 at 10:15 am

I’m in Japan and apparently I can’t watch this due to copyright violations or so says Mr. Youtube :/

44 Aquamarine 11.09.09 at 10:27 am

@ QoD: i heart you!! thank you for staying up above at the level of qtness.

i absolutely adore this and all similar videos and pix i’ve seen of this pair. they are amazing! suryia is just wonderful and over the top–i love how she pries open roscoe’s jaws and rams the half a banana down his throat, which he accepts with appropriate grace. lllluuuuuvvvv!

and, extra points to all who said “orangutan” and not “orangutang.” ahem.

45 Queen of Dork 11.09.09 at 10:29 am

Aquamarine: I’ve just swooned from your lovely post!

46 Paunchie 11.09.09 at 10:56 am

Orangutangs are the ones who invented that drink for teh astronauts?

I just hope he knows to be gentle with that puppers, as you know they get humungo and strooong as adults.

And it’s great when he hugs the dog and grins that huge grin, just like a regular kid. And falls down, BANG. Ha.

I also wonder what the elephant thinks with all these different animules in her family?

47 Aquamarine 11.09.09 at 11:13 am

@QoD: giving swoons is my greatest pleasure! O:-)

@paunchie: ah, you are right!! (tang) too funny!

you are also right re: strength. i wonder how they could go about training the orang to be gentle? i’ve had a little luck teaching one of my dogs to be a *very* little more gentle with my very young nieces and nephews, and surely a ‘tan is smarter than a pup.

48 Queen of Dork 11.09.09 at 11:17 am

I feel like I’ve been hugged. *swoon*

49 Katrina 11.09.09 at 11:27 am

These are two old souls who have found each other again!

50 Shannon 11.09.09 at 11:27 am

Also – a stray may be homeless for a couple of days and be very very hungry, lonely and scared. Wouldn’t you be? The hunting pack sounds plausible to me as well. But no one ever came to look for him either, so he’s better off where he is now, clearly.

As an aside – please research this place before you decide to make a visit. I have serious concerns about some of their practices, particularly as it involves pictures with tiger cubs.

51 Queen of Dork 11.09.09 at 11:35 am

Shannon: I’ve actually been homeless before and it really, really sucked. :( I was very hungry and quite frightened.

52 fling 11.09.09 at 11:38 am

Not allowed to watch it either. I keep forgetting that if I am not American I don’t exist (up here in Canada, with all of our natural resources…………….)

53 JudyB 11.09.09 at 11:53 am

Not allowed in the UK either so I just watched it on the proxy link (Thank You, Dustin!!!).
Oh my gosh do I ever love interspecies friendships, gives me the warm and fuzzies on a cold november night. *Sigh*

54 PJ 11.09.09 at 12:08 pm

I’m verklempt and giggly all at the same time.

55 victoreia 11.09.09 at 12:51 pm

They weren’t kidding when they said the orang was “rolling around” with the dog!

Waaaay too cute! (And here’s hoping the internet powers-that-be let EVERYBODY see this soon….)

56 Jenn 11.09.09 at 12:53 pm

I think I almost died from the cuteness of that.

57 Kristabelle 11.09.09 at 2:02 pm

LOVED when the Orang stood up next to the dog then flopped on the ground! Loved the hugging and taking him for a “walk” – ie, rolling and rolling and rolling with the leash attached to the dog!! Hilarious!
I definitely agree that these are two souls who have found each other again. Awesome. :)

58 sunny 11.09.09 at 3:48 pm

the floppage is obvy the best part!

59 Nightbird 11.09.09 at 4:27 pm

Is it just me or is the guy telling the story sound just like the guy that does the ads for the Mattress Warehouse? Same voice, same cadence of speach? Anyway, cute!

Unfortunately, hunting dogs will often catch the scent of a critter and disappear. Oftentimes the owners can’t or won’t spend the time looking for them. They can wind up miles from where they started out from and they often start out miles from home to begin with.

60 LizzyCat 11.09.09 at 4:32 pm

Orangey-tang!

61 Copperbat 11.09.09 at 4:41 pm

<3 <3 <3

*warmfuzzies*

62 Ugh 11.09.09 at 5:27 pm

Copyright has really gotten out of control.

63 kittensnotkids 11.09.09 at 5:57 pm

Sesame Street is {filmed} in New York. I cannot tell you how to get to Sesame Street, however. Google Maps may know ;)

You know, Grover would make an excellent CO spokesmonster, since his signature phrase is “and I am CUTE, too!”
I see a cross-promotional opportunity!

64 Arachnophile 11.09.09 at 6:14 pm

OMG, I can’t believe I almost missed this. THANKS so much for the proxy. That dog knows a perfect life when he sees it. ;) I just died.

65 Samantha 11.09.09 at 6:31 pm

Australians don’t deserve cuteness either. Sniff.

66 molls 11.09.09 at 6:37 pm

Hello, my name is Molls and I’m a Suryia-Rosco-holic. Even though I’ve watched this video about six times, I still can’t get enough of that pair!

67 Bonnie 11.09.09 at 6:46 pm

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. Wait, how many w’s is that? I’m teenkking mebbie about a hunnerd more w’s, or two hunnerd! All hail buddies! People could learn a lot from those two :0)

68 kibblenibble 11.09.09 at 8:27 pm

lunastar1311 and Katrina, I’m right there with ya! My first thought was, these two knew and loved each other already! :-)

69 TracyFlick 11.09.09 at 8:30 pm

“If you hand an orangutan a candy, it will give back half to you.” I can’t even think about this without getting misty-eyed. Kindness and sharing are universal.

70 Deb 11.09.09 at 9:14 pm

(flopping down backwards, too full of cuteness and heartthrob to maintain any balance whatsover)

71 noel 11.10.09 at 1:38 am

very cute story!

72 Barbarella a.k.a. The Mad Cat Lady 11.10.09 at 3:12 am

Gah. Can´t watch it in the Canary Islands (Spain) either. :(

73 Amanda b. 11.10.09 at 6:59 am

That was soooooooooooooo darling! I want to ride a bike with an orangutan!

74 Frances 11.10.09 at 8:31 am

75 Danielle 11.10.09 at 9:30 am

<3 <3 <3

76 Selphie le Boffin 11.10.09 at 2:19 pm

Yep, doesn’t work in Australia either, and Dustin’s link isn’t working for me too.
Poo!

77 Queen of Dork 11.10.09 at 2:22 pm

Wow! Holy crap?! What kind of coolest name EVER is Selphie le Boffin!!!!! Wow! Too cool!

78 mandika 11.10.09 at 6:37 pm

By far one of the best things you’ve ever posted!

79 lmjbre 11.11.09 at 8:31 am

Argh… live in the UK so can’t see this one. The YouTube proxie isn’t working as its temporarily down, and the link to Nat Geo doesn’t work either, the video just loads forever without anything happening.

Noooo….!

80 Megan 11.13.09 at 7:38 pm

That was the sweetest thing ever!!!!! They love each other soooo much, its amazing to watch. :)

81 Rachel 11.15.09 at 4:54 pm

Is it possible to die from happiness? SO. CUTE. I loved how Roscoe was so patient as to let an orangutan tug on his leash. The orang was rolling about behind him as if he’d been trained to do so. This clip made my day. As…someone….said, I can die happy now that I’ve seen this.

SHOUT-OUT TO SUYRIA AND ROSCOE BEST BUDS FOREVER
