29 edward 10.11.09 at 4:30 pm: We keep chickens, and the chicks are absolutely fearless. The hens have a special noise they make to call them back. Otherwise, they will literally run up your arm (one of ours likes pecking at a mole near my elbow). You can just hold your hand above a brood, and they will jump up on it.

And hens are excellent mums…I’ve seen one scare off a deer who came over to see what was going on.

Most varieties lay eggs that have a green or blue shell and there are a few that lay pale orange eggs. They have beautilful mottled orange brown and grey Feathers when they are full grown. They are excelent hunters of bugs. They also lay about 6 eggs a week when they are young. They are fairly friendly if handled a lot when young.
