Don’t make me say it

by Meg on October 1, 2009

What should I title this post. Whaaaaaaat should I title it? I must think hard about a reference for this peckish pygmy. I can’t think of anything! If only I could reference a ridiculous, aggressive marble-munching game from my childhood!

Whoa, I freaking love it.
It looks like a toy.

12 Not That Mike The Other Mike 10.01.09 at 7:32 pm

Perhaps Meg should title it “Ravenous, Ravenous River-horse”? (“Hippopotamus” in Greek means approximately “horse of river.”)

13 Queen of Dork 10.01.09 at 7:36 pm

Stephanie: We have the same first name! Spelled the same even!

14 googlie eyes 10.01.09 at 7:41 pm

If that’s a horse, I’m a giraffe on roller skates.

15 Juniper Jupiter 10.01.09 at 7:41 pm

Okay…now I got it!

Pow Pow POWER WHEELS!!! :D

Hungry, hungry hippos!
We’re hungry, hungry hippos!
We love to stuff our face!
Hungry hungry hippos!
The marble-eating race!

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1217348/Pictured-The-baby-pygmy-hippo-whos-barely-bigger-lettuce-leaf.html

I was totes getting ready to submit this, but then it occurred to me that it was only a matter of time before it showed up since EVERYONE IN THE WORLD would submit it.

I want one.

19 Kelsey 10.01.09 at 8:05 pm

How great would it be to wake up to one of THOSE Hungry Hungry Hippos on Christmas morning???

21 Jakepets 10.01.09 at 8:24 pm

Oh, OH, and please note that Rotterdam’s “Blijdorp Zoo” might as well call itself “Blorp Zoo” and be done with it!

22 Redd 10.01.09 at 8:26 pm

that is ether the tinest hippo ever, or the most gigantic head of lettuce. I wonder how my downstair neighbors would feel about me bringing one of those home…

23 Deb 10.01.09 at 8:37 pm

Eew. It’s too moist and slimy. Plus it has creepy eyes. [Goes off to look at all the cute 'tocks again]

24 erin 10.01.09 at 8:41 pm

Looks too fake/plastic/CUTE to be real.

25 Kivrin 10.01.09 at 8:46 pm

I would very much like to share a salad with that ‘potamus.

26 Jen 10.01.09 at 8:47 pm

Soon we really will be seeing house hippos!

27 Tammie 10.01.09 at 9:34 pm

28 Yowza 10.01.09 at 9:47 pm

I kinda wish I didn’t click thru the You’re a Strange Animal link. There’s some decidedly un-sweet stuff over on that sweet lil’ Tumblog.

29 Alyssa Myers 10.01.09 at 10:04 pm

Where’s they get the tiny carrots!?

30 Banquo 10.01.09 at 10:07 pm

I just want to film one of those old “monster movie” type scenes with him. Terrorizing a village of peeps,… all “Nom nom,…*ear twiggle* stomp “Nom Nom”
(yeah I get strange late at night)

31 apotheosis 10.01.09 at 10:12 pm

No crocodiles
Or rhinoceroususes
All I really like
Are hippopotamussesses
And hippopotamuses like me tooooooooooo

32 Bird 10.01.09 at 10:17 pm

I think I squeed…..

33 Hon Glad 10.01.09 at 10:38 pm

Excuse me, but it is a Hippo of restricted growth, not a Pygmy Hippo.

Yours Angrily

Colonel Evelyn P Merryweather (rtd)

34 AuntieMame 10.01.09 at 11:18 pm

Banquo, your “ear twiggle” made me guffaw out loud. :D

35 Illise 10.01.09 at 11:21 pm

Sweet, merciful crap! Please don’t do that to me on a Friday afternoon!! My brain is already weakened, something like this can easily send me over the edge.

*BRAIN EXPLOSION*

Oh dear god, the blorpular, stubular, ear nubule, eye capsule nommulance of it all! Eeeeeeeexcellent!

PS. Does anyone feel like if they went to scoop up this little blorpy bebeh he would squirt right out of your hands like a bar of soap in the shower?

41 doomchild 10.02.09 at 2:33 am

Hol, I’m with you… let me know if you find any good therapist to get you back on track.

And please, no SNL-jokes about therapists and Jeopardy…

42 doomchild 10.02.09 at 2:36 am

Note to self: Never watch Tammie’s links at the office.

Now I’m at Youtube watching baby animule vids and my eyes are all teary and I wanna squeeeeel and .. and I think I need a hug. From a baby hippo.

43 Jason A 10.02.09 at 3:00 am

I didn’t even know they made hippos that small. Either that hippo is friggin tiny or that head of lettuce is FREAKING HUGE!

44 TC 10.02.09 at 3:27 am

It’s so cute, I’m in denial… it looks Photoshopped. :(

45 Lucy's Mommeh 10.02.09 at 3:37 am

Found this yesterday on fark.com, sent it to a couple of friends. SHE said omg, is that real? and HE said it looked like a smoked ham gone wrong with a mouth & feet. (snort)

46 Nano's Mom 10.02.09 at 3:42 am

Rule #14! AND #7.

47 Katrina 10.02.09 at 4:00 am

House hippos, ittsty-bitsy-hippos, but there isn’t much I wouldn’t give to be able to wiggle my ears like that…imagine the practical uses-calling a cab, yelling at the kids, saying ‘come hither’ to my husband- man, I would employ it full time!

48 Kathryn 10.02.09 at 4:14 am

This is way worse than being surprised by a frog in your bag of salad mix.

49 freetomato 10.02.09 at 4:43 am

I saw little guy on Fark yesterday and was gonna submit too but figured I’d be beaten to the punch.

Another PC title – “Space efficient” hipplet

50 Birdcage 10.02.09 at 4:58 am

It’s the mythical hiphop apotamus.

[My lyrics are bottomless... - Ed.]

51 Suzanne 10.02.09 at 5:07 am

So very, very adorable. There’s a video of it spazzing about and it melts my usually stone cold heart.

It’s a Blorp Buffet, of course.

53 BiscuitMamma 10.02.09 at 5:30 am

Thank you Summer. The scale was making my brain hurt.
But wow–hippos kill more people than any other anim…oh wait. Thud.

56 J. 10.02.09 at 5:48 am

Alternate caption: “Lettuce entertain you. Lettuce make you smile.” : )

57 Lizzums 10.02.09 at 5:48 am

Hubby and I have an ongoing argument entitled “The most dangerous animal is the…” I say the hippo, because I saw on TV once that nobody has survived a hippo attack. He says its the sloth, because by the time you’ve noticed it sneaking up on you, it’s got you and it’s not letting go. Topic is still up for debate.

58 chanpon 10.02.09 at 6:08 am

Mini mini muncher? Famished famished foal?

59 MissKitty 10.02.09 at 6:08 am

OMG. Soooo cute. I can’t even stand it. I’ve never been that excited to see lettuce in my life.

60 ebizzlenizzle 10.02.09 at 6:16 am

awww thats adorable! i want one as a pet

61 Wvaden 10.02.09 at 6:16 am

I have a newspaper clipping about a pygmy hippo that I have kept since I was a little kid. I loved them even back then!

62 chicky82 10.02.09 at 6:21 am

The baby hippo reminds me of Concerned Children’s Advertisers (Canada), 2000 commercial. I saw this pic and said “that’s a house hippo!” so cute, all it needs is footprints in the peanut butter toast :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLG2JP0P5JE

63 Lerrinus 10.02.09 at 6:23 am

Suzanne, yer video made me squeal out loud, so cute!

The name of the blog this came from has put Larry Gowan on my brain!

*sings*
Well they say I should approach you with caution,
Not to let you be aware of my fear…!
Never know what you’ll find,
Don’t understand your kind, ’round here!

You’re a strange animal
That’s what I know,
You’re a strange animal,
I got to follow!

:-D

64 bubbyscranky 10.02.09 at 7:06 am

66 Camille 10.02.09 at 7:11 am

He’s like an eggplant with feet. (I mean that in a good way.)

67 Noelle (the First) 10.02.09 at 7:21 am

It’s a good thing I’m alone in the office today because this made me laugh loud and long! I loved Hungary, Hungary Hippo! And what a cute baby.

68 Noelle (the First) 10.02.09 at 7:22 am

Whoops, I meant Hungry, Hungry Hippo.

Hungary takes it to a whole different level….not to mention country!

69 Roger 10.02.09 at 7:32 am

sfgate.com had the best caption:

Salad for lunch – YAY!

70 ksully 10.02.09 at 7:35 am

How did I not know that such an animal existed? If there can be pygmy hippos and mini horses, surely we can all soon have miniature cows as pets.

71 curiouscreature 10.02.09 at 7:39 am

am i the only one that thinks the mamma hippo is more cute?

72 Berg 10.02.09 at 8:07 am

Wish I could get that excited about a salad–it would certainly help with the weight loss regimen! Cute little guy, especially with the algae accessories.

73 Rachael 10.02.09 at 8:29 am

I’m so old I never even heard of Hungry, Hungry Hippo until I came to CO. :)

74 Danielle 10.02.09 at 8:36 am

Sooooo cute! <3<3<3

and ksully………….check out miniature jersey cattle. ;o)

75 Megan 10.02.09 at 8:49 am

Lerrinus – I have Gowan in my head too!

76 Paunchie 10.02.09 at 9:19 am

Blijblorp in Rotterdam!

Cute little thang, he can swim in yer baf-tub!

77 Kar 10.02.09 at 9:43 am

Ok seriously, the lettuce is bigger than the bebbeh! Don’t we have rules about that sort of thing…

78 Bada 10.02.09 at 10:28 am

Que bocona!

79 hyura 10.02.09 at 10:31 am

i knew something was wrong with the picture but couldn’t figure out what. had to read the comments to finally figure out that the hippo is as big as the lettuce. that was really bad.

80 Babalucci 10.02.09 at 10:47 am

Lots of Canadian references today…I love it! Gowan…lol My grandma still has a poster of him in her basement that she put up for us when we were kids :) AND the house hippo commercial is back!! I just saw it the other day!!!

81 popperganny 10.02.09 at 12:12 pm

that so does NOT look real…i had to look and look and look and then finally realized…’that is a baby ..aminal…’ – and PRECIOUS is its name!!! :D

82 platedlizard 10.02.09 at 12:47 pm

@ ksully, check out these guys. They are not calves!

And now I wish wish WISH I did not live in an apartment. I want one. No. I want a herd of leetle leetle cattle.

83 platedlizard 10.02.09 at 12:50 pm

Ohh, take a look at this picture! I love the look on the big guy’s face!

84 Susan 10.02.09 at 1:20 pm

Wait… so house hippos DO exist?

[Why yes, they do. :D - Ed.]

85 mfar 10.02.09 at 1:21 pm

OMG! You’re a Strange Animal should have a parental warning symbol on the home page. It is like the evil, rather disgusting, dark twin of CuteOverload (or should I say CuteOverlord – which is more how I think of it – I cannot refuse it’s command). Anyhow – I went to You’re a Strange Animal and now I’m totally creeped out!!!! The parasite that replaces a fish tongue – this is utterly nightmare stuff. The deformed pig? I’m not sure there’s enough sweet, fluffy loveliness even on CuteOverload to knock those horrible images out fo my head. Seriously folks! SAVE YOURSELVES – DO NOT click there!

[Huh. Well now I have to, you know. - Ed.]

[...hmm, yeah, OK. We probably won't be linking to that one permanently. Please note that Meg linked to a specific post, not the whole blog. - Ed.]

86 freetomato 10.02.09 at 1:22 pm

When I was wee, I desperately wanted a little tiny elephant about 15 lbs or so. I think I ate too many Cocoa Krispies when I was little. http://www.flickr.com/photos/planet-q/3118655661/

87 harlemgrrl 10.02.09 at 1:24 pm

chizzomp, people.

88 Katrina 10.02.09 at 1:46 pm

Kathryn, and you know every single one of us will be watching out for that package. We would ALL buy it.

89 mfar 10.02.09 at 1:57 pm

Apologies to the Cute-O-Sphere – didn’t mean to imply that Miss Meg did anything wrong linking to an image from You’re a Strange Animal. Sorry to splash you all with my negative reaction. Just not a great day for me to see weird strange and not-all-that pleasant looking critters. I’m currently nursing an 18 year old cat dying slowly of chronic rhenal failure, so I’m a little extra tweeked at present. I’ll go quietly now, Officer, really…..

[No worries, or at any rate, not from my direction - Ed.]

90 Mal 10.02.09 at 2:53 pm

And it lives at Amsterdam’s Blorp Zoo!

91 earlybird1 10.02.09 at 3:47 pm

Hee hee! He reminds me of that ecstatic turtle eating a strawberry a few posts back. Same “I-cannot-believe-this-awesome-luck” smile! :D

92 ksully 10.02.09 at 4:05 pm

@ platedlizard

I am speechless and am totally getting one. From their milk I will make mini cheese rounds and mini ice cream cones.

93 Biscuit Tin 10.02.09 at 4:14 pm

@ Tammie – Thanks so much for linking to that video! The last minute is the best, and the bliss on the baby’s face in the end! I wonder if I’ve been that happy and secure and right-with-my-world?I suspect not. I was a very self-aware baby.

94 gillian 10.02.09 at 5:11 pm

wish i’d thought of “lettuce entertain you first”……
any way, my suggestion is;

“A (water) horse is a horse (of course, of course)

[rest of song to tv show]
And noone can talk to a (water) horse of course,
Unless the horse is the famous, Mr Ed!

95 Karen 10.02.09 at 5:21 pm

Aww, he looks so happy!

96 Queen of Dork 10.02.09 at 5:25 pm

Earlybird1: Yes! He does have the same ecstatic expression about his salad as that strawberry nomming turtle! The two of them should have a slumber party and have salad pizzas together.

97 omg that's so cute` 10.02.09 at 6:26 pm

Lettuce!!!! My favorite!!!!!111!!!!

98 Jackie 10.03.09 at 2:20 am

Wow it’s so tiny! Reminds me of the cartoon they had as a part of Daffy Duck’s Quackbusters which is now on DVD BTW, where people kept seeing a tiny elephant. It didn’t show the ending of the cartoon, which I think was taken from a cartoon called Punch Drunk Elephant. The idea was the city ended up in hysteria, cause everyone thought they were going nuts seeing a tiny elephant.

Also, and interesting thing is when they show a thin man calling the police about the elephant in the beginning, it’s supposed to be Fritz Freeling who worked on Looney Tunes. So the joke is that one of the people who worked on the cartoons, finally lost their mind after working on them for so long. LoL

99 Katrina 10.03.09 at 7:07 am

mfar- one day at a time as you are helping a little animal companion in need.
Good wishes to both of you.

100 Resriechan 10.03.09 at 7:16 am

@ mfar: All my best energies to you & your weary 4-legged person. Hopefully it helps your frame of mind, knowing that you’re easing his path ….

101 Queen of Dork 10.03.09 at 7:34 am

I know it’s early so I’m whispering but… (sssshhhh) not to wake up the CO admins) but still. (like little kids waking up parents Christmas morning) nudge. nudge. ummmm. Caturday. It’s Caturday mom and dad. wake up. mom, dad? wakey, wakey. caaaturrrddaayy. mom? dad? I’ll bring you the oatmeal. ssshhhhh.

102 dub1 10.03.09 at 8:00 am

@Lerrinus: thanks for naming the Gowan brain worm: perfect for CO, the way we feel when a picture of a bun who OWNS OUR SOULS!!

Watchin’ your moves, they look so radical
Hearing your words, they sound fanatical
Something inside reveals you’re magical
uh whoa
I cannot get enough
[synth drums]

They’ve been tryin’ to stick a line in your system
Analysing the defences you hold
Trying to open wide
Hoping to step inside
Your soul

Well, everything here is unfamiliar
Nothing we’ve seen remotely similar
How can it be you’re so peculiar
oh yo
I cannot get enough!
Et Omnia Spiritus!

[all hail CanCon!]

103 Resriechan 10.03.09 at 8:00 am

@ QofD:

to borrow part of a caption from one of the other posts, I think m & d are “vehwy vehwy” sweepy, this mohning …..here in Fla, it’s getting on, for 11 am…..

104 Queen of Dork 10.03.09 at 8:05 am

*sssshhhh* mom? dad? wake up. hello? (whispering). hello? Caturday. No Friday Haiku and now…ssssshhhhh. no caturday either. what happened? where did everybunny go? Soooooo scared. (shivering from the withdwals). shiiiiivering. brrrrrrrr. it’s so cold. soooooo cold. (help…me).

105 Queen of Dork 10.03.09 at 8:09 am

Hi Resriechan

Thank goodness someone else has had their orange juice and is okay this lovely Oct. morning. I guess Qtes are okay.

106 Queen of Dork 10.03.09 at 8:21 am

By the way Resriechan: so cool that you in your life have been a librarian. This is a field of work I have alway wanted to pursue (along with forensic hand writing) I truly hope that this weekend brings you peace, relaxation and happiness.

(Another thing, what sort of a degree must I obtain if I decided to become a librarian)?

107 Katrina 10.03.09 at 8:25 am

98.6F, QoD.
(snerk) my family is just full of librarians.

108 Queen of Dork 10.03.09 at 8:34 am

Katrina: Really1??!11 I would love to be one. Iove books!

109 Queen of Dork 10.03.09 at 8:52 am

One other thing: Have you peeps seen/read Farenheight 451? It’s a really cool movie about not being allowed to read books. They burn them all. And then, all the people have to memorize their favorite book to share with others. Cool movie. Cool book. (451 degrees is the temperature at which paper burns). If I had to pick a book to memorize I think one of my top ten would be The Hobbit. (Also, Logan’s Run is another good movie) :)

110 Resriechan 10.03.09 at 9:08 am

Hi Q of D:
There are actually several possibilities. Mind you, some of these details might be different these days. But as of the last time I was looking at the coursework/ programs…these were the approx. expectations:
If ya wanna just be a wonderful, plug-in, part-time worker, you can probably apply at your local city/ county library, as a circulation desk person or shelver without needing any library particulars.

Peeps who wanna be in charge of a public SCHOOL ( grades K-12)
library (official terminology “media center”, these days) generally get a Bachelor’s in Educ (4-yrs coursework, undergraduate).

What I did was an MLS; got my undergraduate in French, then took 1- 1 1/2 yrs graduate coursework, as a Reference/ Research person, specifically for Public (city/ county) Libraries. Other people might take an MLS (likely affiliated with Info Tech these days) to specialize in Reference at college or university libraries/ media centers.

Cuteness & books to All !!

111 earlybird1 10.03.09 at 9:34 am

Wow,who knew CO was going to become the new social networking site? LOL!

112 Queen of Dork 10.03.09 at 9:40 am

Resriechan: Thank you. You are a fount of information. I have to admit that I was trying to solicite information from you because you have said that you are a librarian. This is something that I’m excited about and would LOVE to pursue.

Thank you so much,

Warm Fuzzies to you,
Stef

113 Jenny 10.03.09 at 9:41 am

OK, so I just about DIED from CUTE, but I was very quickly resuscitated by photos of the TONGUE EATING LOUSE from You’re a Strange Animal… gah!!

114 Queen of Dork 10.03.09 at 9:48 am

I’ve heard horror stories about that Strange Animal site. I’ve opted to not go on it. But at the same time, I’m horribly nosey about it. Is it really that bad?! (scared).

115 Queen of Dork 10.03.09 at 10:10 am

I call myself Stef because my Mom (the nurse) thought that the abbreviation for Stephanie looked too much like the medical term for Staph, which I guess is a yucky disesase. That nobody would want to have. So I learned to spell my name, “Stef”

Love you, peeps!!!!

Stef

116 Jenny 10.03.09 at 10:11 am

That site is like…cute…cute…..cute…..cute….HORRIBLY AWFUL OMGWTF!…cute…..cute….DEFORMEDPIGGYAUGHH….cute…..cute, etc. Just come back to CO to re-ground yourself and you should be OK.

117 Resriechan 10.03.09 at 10:14 am

@ QoD: The cool thing, about Warm (Wait, that’s self-contradictory!!) Fuzzies.. …..is that I can catch’ em & toss ‘em “Rightbackatcha” !!!!

BTW, Skippymom wrote you an answer, as well, about studying to work (“Play”??) in libraries– only she was under the Post called “Greetings…Alternate reality…”) It’s Comment # 88 ..

Cuteness & Peace to All!!

118 Queen of Dork 10.03.09 at 10:29 am

I’ve caught them. Thank you! I am holding them tight and listening to the purring. I have to go back and see what skippymom said.

Meantime, my cat is having yet another freak-out session! Must hold him!

119 Queen of Dork 10.03.09 at 10:29 am

Owwwwww!!!!!!

120 Queen of Dork 10.03.09 at 10:37 am

ruv roo resrieshcand. ruv roo.

121 skippymom 10.03.09 at 10:40 am

Q of D, are you badly injured?

122 Queen of Dork 10.03.09 at 10:41 am

No. I’m fine. why?

Hi skippymom! How is Skippy? SamKitty is not that great. He got in a fight with a Marmie from down the street. He is limping a little bit but I don’t think enough to merit a trip to the vet.

That was one of my favorite games :) The marbles use to fly off the board though sometimes.

Sweet post CO peeps.

Love the fact that someone remembered the Domestic House Hippo commercial from way back and the Flight of the Conchords reference. All we need is a little Rhymenoceros munching on some veggies and we’re good.

143 HedgeBaby 10.13.09 at 6:35 pm

you could have titled it: “gee… I could’ve had a V-8!”

144 Gloria 10.15.09 at 6:33 pm

My desktop has been a long sequence of pictures from Cute Overload. Each time I change it, I switch off the cutest picture in the whole world for an even cuter one.

Now I think it’s safe to assume that I will never change my desktop again.
