Summer in the shade
Green leaf is my companion
Peaceful Friday fun
Green palace of shade
Solitude is what I want
You leaf me alone
Shy, little rodent
Hiding ‘neath a big green leaf
Cats can’t get me here
Leafy greens leafy
Cute nosicle all a twitch
Nom nom nom nom nom
Please don’t rake the lawn!
Homes are very hard to find
In this neighborhood
Sweetest rodent face
Safely ensconced in green shade
Time for a short nap
Mousie My Mouse
Cuddled in her green leaf
Daydreaming of cheese
lets play in my fort
tell me what is the password?
“No kittehs allowed”
Damn Cute Overload
Making me be creative
I’m so bad at this.
Hi Rattie! Wow that
Is some green hide out ya got
tickle tickle HEE!
Someone take off that awful thing about the chihuahua with the fork in his head! Eeeks.
“Her haiku heaven” is 6 syllables, not 5
her-ha-i-ku-hea-ven
[Um, we say "Haiku" with two syllables. Just like it's not "He-a-ven" either - Ed.]
Secret hiding place
Life is good in my green den
The world passes by
Good camouflage, rat.
I almost didn’t see you there
except for the nose
Leaf’s oval peephole
Frames bewhiskered muzzlepouch
Cuteness reigns supreme
Beleaf it or not,
I can’t beleaf it’s Friday.
Yay what a releaf!
Leaf it to Rodent?
Is this the new spin-off of
Leaf it to Beaver?
Cool oak leaf shelter:
Nom-able gingerbread house
For rat omnivores
You think me cute, yes?
Coquettish eyes a-twinkle
I bit your hamster
Steven’s post got me curious, so I checked Dictionary.com and Merriam-Webster.com, both of which show “haiku” as having two syllables:

Dees posh leaf club
ees only for dee famous!
You not on da leest!
C.O. loves nosicles, it’s true
Be it rodent or puppeh or gnu
I promise next week I’ll try, hey,
I know it’s not “Limerick Friday,”
But I really do suck at haiku.
[Bummer that this is >140 characters, which means I can't fit it all into a Tweet. Oh well, WIN anyway.
- Ed.]
“Haiku” does have three
Syllables in Japanese,
Which has no diphthongs.
[See, here's the thing, though
[Not That Mike The Other Mike
[Isn't Japanese - Ed.]
Pixy – do you speak Japanese, out of curiosity? I do (well – kind of – chotto masu) and technically its two syllables, given pronunciation – not the spelling. I thought that “Hai” in Haiku is one sound, not two….as opposed to saying “Hai” as in “yes” – then it has a very subtle two syllable pronunciation….but I dunno – maybe I’ve been saying it wrong all these years…?
They told me it was a fig leaf,
Use it to cover your parts,
But when I got it over my head,
I decided to use it as a house instead!
(Not haiku, but my weak attempt at serenading Da Maus)
a giant fig leaf
modest mouse’s cabana
before a cool dip
In hiragana,
Either would be written as
Ha-i – no “ai” sound.
Having said all that,
I’ve heard “hai” spoken both ways
(To my western ears).
(Oh, and no, I can’t
Speak a word of Japanese -
Just watch anime.)
True, Ed; my haiku
Would not scan in Japanese.
“Haiku” two? Or three?
And in Japanese,
“Mike” would have two syllables!
Which breaks everything…
we’re ‘merikans, we speak ‘merikanese so haiku is two syllables.
=P
The middle line of
The sample haiku can be
Tricky to say right.
Sweet little mousie,
Your elegant green housie,
Cools you in Summer.
Sweet pink nosicle
relaxing and eating leaf
You had me at “nom”
Or if you’re a rat,
A vegetational hat -
What’s cooler than that?
all kidding aside, couldn’t find a viable website on how many syllables the word “haiku” has. But interesting discussion, b/c Haiku is a Japanese form of poetry, if the Japanese pronounce with 3 syllables, wouldn’t it make sense for it to have 3 syllables in English?
For me, its along the line of people who try pronounce spanish words, without even trying to say it correctly. For instance “Punta Gorda” is pronounced Poontah Gorrrdah. Not Puntah, Gordah. Makes me cringe.
OK – pixy I see what you mean. You are right it is spelled in hiragana in three parts: Ha-i-ku. Therefore if the poem is written in Japanese – then it counts for three syllables/onji. In english, it doesn’t. Good show.
There once was a mouse
With a leaf for a house
And a little pink nub for a nose.
She could have used bricks,
Or straw – even sticks
But foliage is what she chose.

One word that always got me when it has been mispronounced is PAELLA.
I am not Spanish, but I do cook – a lot! I know it is PAELLA: (Pie-ay-ah).
You cannot imagine what comes out of people’s mouths for this word. Mostly things that sounds like PELLA.
But back to Da Maus…and his Haus.
You mean it doesn’t rhyme with “STELLA-A-A-A-A-A!!??”
Little mouse says, Wait!

Haiku aside for the moment, does everybody fully appreciate the beepability of that little nosicle? The BEF? The big, floppy ear? What is this little cutie, anyway–mouse, rat, or something else?
