This Just In: Okey-Dokey Okapi!

She looks like the head-on collision of a zebra and a giraffe, but she’s 100 percent gorgeous.  Meet Kalispell, an okapi born June 27 at the Denver Zoo, one of only a half-dozen okapi zoo births in North America annually for this rare species. But don’t rush to see her yet, Denverites — she’s still under wraps until she gets a bit older.  For more, see the Denver Post.

  1. hon glad says:

I think there’s a touch of moose as well.

  2. TheGreatKatzini says:

Aaaaaaww, with these ears, she looks ready to take off….

  3. varekai97X says:

She looks like she is made of crushed velvet and I want to snorgle her!

  4. What a sweet baby!

  5. Oooh, more like a zebra and a moose. A Zeus!

  6. hon glad! jinx! 🙂

  7. Heather says:

These guys are cuuuties. Once considered extinct, it’s nice to see a babeh. Hopefully, she will become a integral part of a breeding programme to re-establish these guys.

  8. Stripey stockings!

  9. Katrina says:

“Their tongues are purple, about 12 inches long and they use them to grab or grasp food.” Maybe they can snorgle with it, too?

  10. Kiragirl says:

    @ Peg of T.

  11. Kalispell, IIRC, is a town in Montana. Beautiful state.

Beautiful okapi, too! My favorite lit teacher, when asked, once said that if he were an animal he’d be an okapi. I have no idea why.

  12. Aw, I have never heard of this animal before! She reminds me of those childrens’ flip books where you mix-and-match parts of different animals! She is very cute, especailly the striped legs!

  13. I once had a private tour of this zoo and the okapi “behind the scenes” was a total highlight. They have sex constantly – I saw them humping each other at least 10 times in the 45 minutes I was there. Oh, and I had my ear licked in a big way. I’ll never forget it.

  14. Jennie- Beat me to it! I love this state =) And I love the Okapi too! So cute!

  15. Katrina says:

So they DO snorgle with their 12-inch purple tongues! YES!
Sweet-looking babeleh, almost as cute as a Corgi. Almost.

  16. Wow Noelle… good thing you got out of there when you did! :o) Sounds like you were the next item on his menue… 😮

  17. Juniper Jupiter says:

    There’s a bit o’ roo in there!!!

Flip ‘er over an’ see if there’s a pocket!!! 😀

  18. 5^^now8ing says:

@ Kelsey – my thoughts exactly! (re: Noelle)

@ pyrit & hon glad — moose makes it perfect!

The stripey little leg parts are my favorites!!

  19. “My favorite lit teacher, when asked, once said that if he were an animal he’d be an okapi. I have no idea why.”

“They have sex constantly – I saw them humping each other at least 10 times in the 45 minutes I was there.”

    Creepy realisations ahead I fear… 🙂

  20. Trabb's Boy says:

You’ll always be my fave, CO, but Zooborns includes a picture with its awesome little ankle socks and shoes. It is the overloadest.

  21. Noelle, hope it wasn’t, erm, foreplay.

  22. marthava says:

The tongue of the okapi is long enough for the animal to wash its eyelids and clean its ears (inside and out): it is the only mammal that can lick its own ears. Dang…what a timesaver! I hate how long it takes to get ready in the morning. End of problem.

  23. Kristabelle says:

My doctor always said, “Never put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear.” He didn’t say anything about my tongue!!!

  24. Those striped legs! For a moment I thought someone had slipped some knee socks on her to keep her legs warm.

  25. Paunchie says:

zebra + moose is loose in the hoose!

    Stripey thigh high stockingks!

  26. AuntieMame says:

Yay! Denver qte! I haven’t been to the Denver Zoo in a couple years. Obviously it’s time to remedy that oversight.

  27. Jessica says:

They have an okapi at this little zoo in Florida I visited, top reason I went, so cute. Plus they had a giraffe named Randal that brushed my hair with his eyelashes, damn!

  28. Nancy (orig) says:

    Definately some mooski in dair.

  29. Love Kalispell and the funny hover-text and shes so adorable and where is Denver anyway?
and other Katrina i do get Hurricane insults (not so much anymore but when it was just named, my dad teased me all the time and i have a quick temper so its unforunately its perfect 4 me) and i have that line too and ” Is it my fault they just HAD to name it after me???” and ty 4 the welcome

  30. AW!!

  31. Gretchen says:

Kalispell’s a town in Montana– so why did the Denver Zoo go out-of-state to name this baby?

  32. Paunchie says:

Probably this gal has some connection to Montana, maybe her parents came from there or somethin’, you know maybe her daddy Moose.

  33. Ev's mum says:

I wasn’t the only one, I see — that velvety little spot between those yumsum ears is just HOWLING for smooches and snorgles! I’m going to go look up what her mam looks like, but that is one breathtaking baby. I always thought some animals (buffalo, moose – and these, for sure) must be God’s experiments for the final products. Glad he let us keep the trial sizes!

  34. brinnann says:

Wiener, I LOL’d. At work. Glad my boss is at lunch!

  35. DaytimeDeb says:

The link to the Denver Post article shows baby standing by mommy! They both have those gorgeous thigh-high stockings…some women would pay big bucks to have hand-painted stockings! Not me, it’s way to hot for stockings, I’ll stick with sandals and just enjoy the pics!

  36. apotheosis says:

That thar ain’t a real critter, right thar.

    It’s some kinda Woozle.

  37. bookmonstercats says:

Marthava – eeeek! Bet Noelle wishes she hadn’t seen that. I wants me a crushed velvet coat and stripey gloves just like the okapi’s.

  38. Andi from NC says:

Her coat looks so silky – mmmm nuzzle nuzzle….

  39. Paunchie says:

her name sounds like “OK Sweetie-Pie”!

  40. jackie31337 says:

The airport code for Kalispell/Glacier Park is FCA. I don’t know why, and I don’t know why I still remember that 11 years after working for an airline, but that was the first thing that came to mind.

  41. OMG OKAPIS!!!

  42. Here is little Kalispell, smelling the flowers (warning, Disney-level cuteness)

  43. The Bronx Zoo once had a poster in the subways that said “If you’re an okapi and you know it, clap your hands.”

  44. zeldapie says:

    Velvety goodness!!!

  45. OMG I see I am not the only (Fromer for me) Montana person on here. Kallispell is a beautiful little town right outside of Glacier National Park..IMO Glacier rivals Yosimite in Beauty and is a fitting name for this beauty.

  46. Theresa IT is a bonus shot with Tocks too.

    Sooo cute.

  47. Awwwwww I love her high-class modesty tail. And those teeeeny flats and anklets!

  48. First session of “Orchestra Summer”! Film at 11!

  49. ooh i just want to snuggle up with her 🙂

  50. Rapwnzel says:

It has such a glossy coat! I want to whisper sweet nothings into it’s giant ears.

  51. What adorable knee socks!

  52. We have a couple of okapi at the Brookfield Zoo in the Chicago area. I have been calling them girebras (giraffe + zebra) for a few years now. This girl is a cutie!

  53. *ahem*
    Bonus albino duckling.

  54. and…. Hickenlooper?

  55. Christina says:

Okapis are one of my favorite animals. I love them, so I’m glad to see one on CO! What a cute little girl. 🙂

  56. Christina says:

In Theresa’s link, she looks like she’s got built-in legwarmers.

  57. Beechnut Okapi-striped gum. Now with stripey boxing gloves!

  58. Someone really ought to sell okapi-patterned knee socks, tights, and leg warmers… I suspect that several us of CO fans would snap them up–I know I’d buy a few pairs!

  59. Von Zeppelin says:

So, you fashionistas out there: do the stripey knee socks really go with the 1970s velour tuxedo this okapi is wearing? How about accessorizing the ensemble with a 12-inch purple tongue? I don’t know. . . it seems a little eclectic or something to me, but what do I know?

  60. We have Okapi here in San Diego at the Wild Animal Park too. Beautiful animals! Kalispell is just lovely, I want to kiss her right on that dark area of her forehead. 🙂

  61. @ Von Z … did you look at her?; now I grant you, most of us could not carry that off, but she makes it look d— good!

  62. Much better than an artichokey!

  63. OkapiokapiOKAPI!!!

The Houston zoo has a pair of these odd but beautiful animals, and for a brief time the zoo would let them come up to the viewing platform where you could pet them. They really are soft as velvet, and love to lick people with their prehensile purple tongues! Next to red pandas, my favorite animals!

  64. Gretchen- Because Montana is made of awesome.

jackie31337- I can’t figure out what FCA would stand for, other than “Fully Capable of Awesomeness.” (Okay, in all actuality it probably has something to do with Flathead or something.)

Okay, MT Pride Girl is going to shut up now.

  65. It doesn’t look like a giraffe.

  66. She looks like a moose. So cute.

  67. It honestly looked for a second like someone had put sneakers on her for a gag.

  68. biscuithead says:

    Hey Berg!

    your okapi socks!

    Okapi socks

  69. @biscuithead: Of course it would be the Japanese, one-upping us on the cute again!

  70. Her outfit is fabulous!

  71. Thanks, biscuithead! Now if I only spoke or read Japanese…

  72. Montana state motto: “Forty Below Keeps Out the RiffRaff”

  73. kaya zebra ya..

  74. How are there still animals on this planet I’ve never heard of? And how does this blog keep finding them. It’s madness!

  75. gravyboat says:

    I love those striped stockin’s!

  76. two words. STRIPED KNEESOX

  77. Theresa- LOL! Sadly it doesn’t work that way, the Southern Californians still manage to make their way up here.

  78. What a gorgeous and cool-looking anipal!

  79. Katrina says:

Orchestra Summer – Lots of young musicians, lots of music, going back in tonight!
YAY! One more musical dream come true!

  80. Not to be all freaky, but he really looks like he was made of different animal parts cobbled together.

  81. Camille – HAHA! That’s the cutest poster ever! I want one for my room! And, um, I’m 41… so yeah… I guess we can all stop wondering why I’m single now.

But seriously. Must stuff Kalispell in my mouf. Now.

  82. AWWWWWW just so cute i want one they are cute when they are little tiny cute calfs

  83. Oh my gosh I live in Denver!! I can’t wait to go and see it (I am not sure what gender it is)!!!!

  84. Beatrice says:

    Her ears look SO SOFT!

  85. If you want Kalispell as your screen saver, just okapi and paste! Har.

  86. I live in Kalispell, MT and FCA airport code stands for Flathead County Airport. They have recently changed it to GPA for Glacier Park Airport. It is absolutely gorgeous here! I love it!!!!!!

  87. Katrina says:

OK, last Orchestra Summer item, but damn, we made the front cover of the Record-Journal this morning! 20 great young musicians, five area college music education students teaching them, concert on Sunday at 3-do it in your town! It fills the whole left in one’s soul knowing one must live without Okapis. Okapis!

  88. 5^^now8ing says:

I thought the Flathead County Airport was in the Great Underground Empire? Ooh, maybe Montana *is* the GUE — better go check right now!

  89. aww how sweet 🙂
