Ten or so years ago my boyfriend rescued a cat that he found left behind in an apartment he was cleaning after the tenants left in a hurry. She passed away about a month ago. A few days after her passing, a young cat with extra toeses showed up in his backyard. She had no collar, no microchip, and shoulder blades you could just about shave with she was so thin, but a roundish belly. He invited her in, and she was so hungry she ate dog kibble. He served cat food and she ate and ate and ate, and kept on eating. It got pretty obvious within a week or so that she was eating for more than one. She just gave birth to six babies last night. I'm planning to put together a photo journal of them and send it in at some point.

About 10 years ago, a black lab mix showed up at our door and adopted us. We never knew who she belonged to, and mom fell in love with her; so we kept her and was dubbed Peaches. Mom took Peaches to the vet for the whole run through to see if there was anything wrong, and the vet insisted that she was not pregnant.

Imagine our surprise when she woke up one morning to find the back room where she slept a bloody mess and six pups nomming on the milk bar..

All pups found good homes. :3

The day after getting the snip (he was kept whole-but-nonfunctional to act as a teaser at the track), my greyhound jumped the fence and had his wicked way with the friendly lady dobermann next door. We thought nothing of it, but apparently his system hadn't quite flushed out yet. A few months later, she gave birth to three long-legged, pointy-nosed blonde pups that run like the wind.

They still live with my neighbour, and come over to visit their wily old Dad sometimes. One day, they might even be able to keep up with him.

We'd had several pairs of male gerbils before, partly as Cat TV, and decided this time to get a pair of females, whom we (okay, I) named Thelma and Louise. Turned out Louise was already pregnant and had four babies a week later. That was bad enough, but then Thelma turned out to be a boy who grew up and got her pregnant AGAIN-- it seemed like a rodent Christmas Story when the second batch appeared, apparently with no male contact.... So instead of two gerbils we had eleven until we adopted a few out. Note: female gerbils don't always get along once they mature, so we had a LOT of individual cages....

My brother has a beautiful Beagledor - what I call the perfect apartment-sized Labrador. He's the result of a jailbreak at the breeders' compund. A Labrador boy found a beagle girl - and poof a litter of Beagledors! Parker is all black with white socks, boots and the tip of his tail, but beagle bone structure. He and his littermates are all beautiful, and I suspect, unrepeatable.

I was fourteen, my female guinea pig Rachel had got knocked up by her rather smaller partner, Roger, just before he keeled over and died from pneumonia. When Rachel's four babies arrived, my father and I duly turned each one upside down and compared all the bits to the diagram in our guinea pig manual. After identifying the only male, we gave him away to a friend of mine and settled Rachel and her daughters into one big cage.

This is how I discovered that diagrams in pet care books can be misleading, and that guinea pigs have no incest taboo.
