I’m canceling my subscription to Field & Stream

by Meg on July 1, 2009

Can you believe this? I go to Field and Stream for Fishing, Hunting, Survival, AND Guns! GUNS!

Now, the world’s leading Outdoor Website Field & Stream is wondering if these fawns are TOO CUTE for their website. See for yourself.

MAYBE if they had tiny fawn-sized rifles, it’d be OK.

_DSC6754_DSC6766_DSC6850_DSC6896

The answer? If traffic is any judge, they should continue the trend. Many more photos to fawn over at their gallery here via “Fly Talk” blogger Tim Romano.

Meg……just how long have you maintained a subscrip to F & S???

Signed,

yours in devotion (but ever so slightly suspicious of the veracity of yer claim to have a longstanding subscrip to F & S) ……..I’m sure that my suspicious nature will be proven unfair & that you’re a Charter Subscriber.

PS: extra love, for the photo of lil’ spotty guy/ gal peering out thru Mama-san’s legs …….

4 Theo 07.01.09 at 6:03 pm

Leslie T. — actually Meg has been terribly frustrated by California’s extra-restrictive firearm legislation. Me, I’m in the Upper Midwest, so naturally I have a whole case of these.

(and if you believe that, I also have this other case full of bridges…)

5 kibblenibble 07.01.09 at 6:08 pm

Teeny tiny twins!!! Awww!

6 lggbie 07.01.09 at 6:10 pm

7 Kate 07.01.09 at 6:24 pm

I love how adorably protective Mama is with her babies! The third photo is my fave!

8 Serena 07.01.09 at 6:27 pm

THEO! those Hello Kitty guns are friggin’ hilarious!

Not only are these little guys adorably spotted and oh-so-leetle, I love the major ‘tude their eyebrows give them; like, “yeah–whu? Whu?” in a little tough-guy voice.

Also: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71Nt45fBw60&feature=related (wiggly whiskery bunny noses ftw!)

9 Marianne 07.01.09 at 6:28 pm

maybe it’s because it gets harder to kill for leisure when one realizes how cute one’s prey is?

10 boots 07.01.09 at 6:33 pm

the baby deers look very disapproving!

11 foxy 07.01.09 at 6:45 pm

Methinks there is some momma tongue action in the last pic. Going into an ear. It made go all squidgy inside, like someone had given me a wet willy.

12 TheGreatKatzini 07.01.09 at 6:51 pm

Dobbular Knobbular! Squeeeee!

13 chanpon 07.01.09 at 7:03 pm

Fawn is super cute, and has Jack Nicholson’s eyebrows.

14 tracylee 07.01.09 at 7:22 pm

gasp! swoon!

my greyhound looks very similar to momma, there.

15 Ashley 07.01.09 at 7:42 pm

AWW. I think I just died a little inside.

16 Brenda 07.01.09 at 7:43 pm

Anyone know the age of these pics?

17 nismo 07.01.09 at 7:46 pm

Yes, the tiny fawn does have a look of disapproval.

18 eknirb 07.01.09 at 7:57 pm

totally knobular. love ‘em.

19 Leslie T. 07.01.09 at 8:02 pm

To General CO’s enjoying the dear little deers: Feel free to completely bypass/ ignore this entry & enjoy the fuzziness of COverload!!!

To Hizzoner Theo — [NOTE: pleez read almost all of the following, in an affectionate & bemused tone...]
I find myself deeply moved by your knowledgeable consultative services in re. my questions & found the attachments (eg: photo & assoc. link provided) to be……*Charming* ! Yeah, that’s the word, for which I was lookin’!!

1: — “Uppity”? Wisconsin ?!?

2:– I took particular interest, in the segment concerning the GSO (“gunshopowner”) who:

a)Took valuable time FROM his important day’s activities, to release to the media, a statement that he was TOO BUSY TO DISCUSS with the media, his hometown’s moral indignation over his merchandising HK AK 47’s. Then, when:

b) his pressing engagements had **finally subsided** sufficiently (“Whew!!”) to allow him to deeply consider the moral implications of kids + pink+ HK + AK47’s ……
his philosophical conclusion was: “pink doesn’t make [them] any more deadly than black”.

I’m SO relieved [snort.NOTcough] …that he took time out, to weigh the consequences to the general safety of the public in that manner.

(– Walks away, chest held high, saluting, humming “Proud to Be An Amer’kun…–)

And — in case anyone might misinterpret my distaste, fer lobbyists fer recreational gun laws: Please don’t even bother, to direct the “o you bleedin’ liberal hippy-freak” comments to me; thanks!!
Me da’ was a Navy pilot. (yes, I certainly have mixed perspectives on whether all of the miltary’s actions were well-considered or necessary). He attended his officer training coursework w/ John Mc Cain . Dad did the whole jet thing for the Navy, from the Cuban Missiles incident, then in Korea & Vietnam. Somehow, G_d kept Dad from getting shot down in his missions. He then served at DC in the Pentagon for 8 years before retiring. 30 yr career, No, he wasn’t a saint but RIP, Dad. I love & miss ya
(oh & no this isn’t a made up story due to the 4th/July holiday pending — timing here is a total coinkink.)

um — so ….it appears that perhaps I *MIGHT* have a touch of an opinion on shooting of little Bambies, when us hoomans aren’t actually starving for meat (or that our military should have been more limited in its “Kill, kill, kill” bombing strategies, that my Dad’s career followed….)

sorry about the whole soapbox thing & I truly do hope that I haven’t horrified legions of those who were here to see the dear little deers !!
I *STILL* admit to a HK infirmity in my moral constitution. but prob wouldn’t choose either the AK47 or the delicate little pink handgun.

— “That is all.” [ref. from FILM M*A*S*H, not the TV show]: Carry on, troops!!

20 Leslie T. 07.01.09 at 8:04 pm

geez, no matter how long I spend proofreading, I still miss something:

“CoinkinkiDink” Sorry again. I’m done, I PROMISE !!

21 Theresa 07.01.09 at 8:06 pm

PLEASE NOTE: In the first pic, the mom deer is Licking a Hiney™.

22 rabs 07.01.09 at 8:16 pm

Berbeh dehrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrssssssssssssss!!!!

23 Theo 07.01.09 at 8:47 pm

Um, wow, Leslie, that was a looong comment… I have no actual opinion about the UppityWisconson blog, personally; I used the URL it because it was the funniest result from a quick Google image search on “Hello Kitty AK-47″.

Sender-inners go into the draw to win a lifetime membership to the NRA.

25 thicktortiethintabby 07.01.09 at 10:48 pm

I think we need a COXCU of the mama-deer hiney-lickingks!

26 hon glad 07.01.09 at 11:23 pm

Guns ‘n Doeses

32 Carlisa 07.02.09 at 4:48 am

OMG! Adorable! ….and other peeps spell it h.i.n.e.y. too??? YAY! (cuz that’s how it’s actually spelt, ya no?! ;)

33 Trabb's Boy 07.02.09 at 5:16 am

Love the double-nommage in the last pic.

These look like they were taken in someone’s yard. I luuuuv watching the many deer in my parents’ yard, but they call them giant rats and my dad even bought a BB gun to try and scare them away from his beloved garden. My sister used to yell at him over his bad attitude. She recently bought a house and started gardening, and it’s been a laugh to watch to her go all full metal jacket when she sees her deer-resistant shrubs with every last leaf nibbled off.

Me, I’m a city gal. Our giant rats are giant rats. Deer are still adorable.

34 Amy 07.02.09 at 5:24 am

AW, I loves me some little fawns! BTW, what will actually be fired from those Hello Kitty rifles—rainbow sparkles, maybe?

35 pyrit 07.02.09 at 5:49 am

I’m so confoozed.

36 JigSawMan 07.02.09 at 5:59 am

In the last picture, I think mama is singing Dear Deer into the fawns ear…

37 ding 07.02.09 at 6:30 am

I’ll bet there is lots of Ehn!-ing as the deerlets try to gain control over their wobbly legs.

38 Annie 07.02.09 at 6:37 am

So obv – a blatant ploy by F&S to boost their traffic numbers by luring unsuspecting animal lovers to their site.

Maybe the post will prove so popular, they’ll change missions from hunting and fishing to ooohhhing and ahhhhing.

39 Mikayla McNaughton 07.02.09 at 6:41 am

OMG!!! AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!! I love deer! ;)

40 kodalai 07.02.09 at 6:43 am

@Trabb’s boy: I understand the frustration of your sister and dad. When I was a kid, we had a dogwood tree in our yard. We also had deer. Do you know, it wasn’t until I went to college that I realized dogwood trees were SUPPOSED to have flowers in the spring?

41 Annie 07.02.09 at 6:51 am

BTW – interesting range of comments on the blog post from the F&S regulars. I was surprised by the overall tone actually.

[Field & Stream regulars? You mean, like, on their own blog? :? - Ed.]

42 Mary Jane 07.02.09 at 7:17 am

Those are so precious. I can’t wait for them to grow up so I can SHOOT THEM. Eh.

43 Valerie 07.02.09 at 7:23 am

AWW! the cute meter just broke.

44 Kristabelle 07.02.09 at 7:25 am

TWINS! They are certainly cranky looking, though!

All you need to get is some Predator Pee and spray it – OFTEN – and the deerses will stay away. Bobcat should work… Yeah, really Predator Pee. Google it!

45 DKN 07.02.09 at 7:46 am

OMG Y’all – you MUST check out the RESCUTE mission of the bear with his poor wittle hayed stuck in a milk jug!!

http://www.fieldandstream.com/photos/gallery/hunting/2009/06/how-rescue-black-bear-its-head-stuck-milk-jug

46 Mily 07.02.09 at 7:56 am

Hunting – just precious…if you are a loser.

47 Caiwin 07.02.09 at 8:09 am

I’m confused by this post. Does meg hunt animals?

48 Theo 07.02.09 at 9:06 am

Caiwin — yes, definitely, all the time. Up and down the streets of San Francisco. From a cable car. You should see the collection of Pomeranian taxidermy on the walls of her $800-per-square-foot trophy room.

49 superboymom 07.02.09 at 9:22 am

We just saw a mama deer and twin fawns on vacation visiting Muir Woods in NorCal . . . I wonder if deer typically have twins?? So totally sweet. The mama just let us stand there and take pix of her and her babies for the longest time!

50 Annie 07.02.09 at 9:26 am

ED – yes I meant over at the Fly Talk blog.

51 Leslie (not the author!!) 07.02.09 at 9:33 am

Theo — sorry — yeah, I spent the evening kicking myself. [...why? :? - Ed.]
I’ll slink away now, & hide in the corner for a few days. The article was pretty diverting, tho !!

Signed,

Repentant

52 AuntieMame 07.02.09 at 9:50 am

Let’s not turn this into a hunter bashing exercise, people. Not everyone who hunts does it just for the joy of killing things. (I don’t hunt at all, but neither do I feel the need to pass judgment on those who do.)

53 skippymom 07.02.09 at 9:59 am

Yeah, yeah, hunting debate or whatever, but really: Itty-Bitty Speckled Fawns!!! and Deer Tocks!!! Hooray!

54 pyrit 07.02.09 at 10:58 am

Imagine, Meg, in a safari hat, khakis, binocs, hip flask, on the plains of Tockswana, in the jeep, hunting for internet access … batting tsi tsi flies …

55 berthaservant 07.02.09 at 11:05 am

I see Meg as more of a fly-feeshing expert…with exceptionally cute rubberized bait w/ googly eyes and puddle-jumpers with pockets filled of sqwerls and sugar gliders.

56 pyrit 07.02.09 at 11:26 am

The minute the Congo’d call my name. I’d say, kudu? Kudu you think yer foolin’?

57 Carlisa 07.02.09 at 12:30 pm

Omgosh…just great….now i picture Meg drinking a Mai-Tai with Cheetah….

58 Carlisa 07.02.09 at 12:48 pm

….and i’m jealous of pic#3 ….>:(

59 pyrit 07.02.09 at 12:52 pm

A cheetah chaser? ;-)

60 Carlisa 07.02.09 at 1:27 pm

OH…K, Cheeta? You know that munchkey on Tarzan!
(sometimes u gif me head-krampz!) *hehe*

61 pyrit 07.02.09 at 2:27 pm

… What’re we talkin’ about?

62 DCH 07.02.09 at 2:27 pm

Can’t wait to shoot one of them when they get older!

/s

63 temperance 07.02.09 at 4:02 pm

you know, i’ve never really understood why some of the people who eat meat are extremely hostile towards people who hunt for their food. it just doesn’t make any sense to me whatsoever (the whole ‘pot meet kettle’ comes to mind).

Also: OMG!!!!1! BABY DEER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WANT!!!!!11! NEED!!!!!1!! etc.

64 kibbles 07.02.09 at 4:21 pm

Oh my GOD what the hell JigSawMan? That video was cute and then the ending. Aaahhhh whyyy?!?!!?!

65 Carlisa 07.02.09 at 4:46 pm
